Abortion Rights: Last Week Tonight with John Oliver (HBO)

Don’t say nobody warned you.

The Supreme Court of Alabama (surprise) ruled that fertilized eggs (mainly from IVF patients) are people and anyone destroying fertilized eggs or allowing them to expire can be charged with their deaths.

This means anyone in Alabama who’s tried IVF now has an obligation to try to birth them all (they can only live frozen for so long, and if you don’t try to save them by implantation then you become a murderer many times over).

This means any facility storing frozen embryos is in a catch 22 if the parents die…they must find a birth mother for every one because destroying them or allowing them to die is murder.

Expect IVF and other fertility treatments to end in Alabama, anyone practicing it risks murder charges under the best circumstances.

Expect Texas to follow suit, they’re probably sick about the fact that they didn’t think of it themselves.

The next step is the same thing for frozen unfertilized eggs or sperm- use them or face charges, then it’s outlawing birth control. Hide and watch.

Edit- if you live in a red state and have stored eggs, sperm, or embryos you should look into moving them to a blue state or destroying them while you can.

You are actually correct, but not how you think. Russia is now losing the war IN RUSSIA, and has lost the support of Russians themselves, with major fires being set by Russians in Russia to protest drafting raids where police just come and take hundreds away to the front, heat turned off in prisons to force prisoners to choose between dying frozen and shot in Ukraine or dying frozen and starving in prison, and major infrastructure targets hit by Ukraine deep inside Russia.
Russia is being supplied ammunition by N Korea…have you seen it?! Charges 1/3 full of loose propellants, shells misshapen and unbalanced. You can’t aim when you don’t know how much propellant you are using or how the shell will fly! Their army is gone, they’re now conscripting warehouse workers. The state is bankrupt and is going dark and cold. You think they’re winning?
If we continue sending ammunition, the Ukrainian war is all but over. Russia is a total loss, all because of Biden’s support for our allies, freedom, and democracy. NATO is stronger, Russia is near collapse.

If it becomes a loss for democracy and a win for Russia, it will be 100% because of MAGA abandoning them to Putin in an effort to hurt Biden and distract from their disgusting sex crimes (Gaetz admitted he ousted McCarthy because he wouldn’t kill the ethics investigation of Gaetz, others went along because McCarthy kept the government open).
America, Ukraine, and the entire world knows it, no question. MAGA is anti democracy, that’s clear to all.

Now let’s hope some frozen smallpox cemetery/mass grave doesn’t thaw out somewhere and start an outbreak. It’s a real possibility, and we aren’t prepared.

Storing dead people at -196°C

newtboy says...

Just idiotic. Idiotic, wasteful, immoral, unethical, and impossible…

The ancient Egyptians had a better chance at resurrection.
When the preservation process causes more irreversible damage than death, paying through the nose for it is just dumb…especially paying to have just your disembodied head frozen in a vat with hundreds of others who died of something incurable.
Won’t it be ironic when they solve the cell rupturing freezing issues, learn to reanimate dead tissue and repair brains that were freezer burned for decades…only to not be able to cure the diseases they gave you by tossing you in a vat with the other heads! 😂

This is nothing new. The first intentionally cryogenically frozen person was frozen in 1967, and not much has changed.

Also…who in the f*ck thinks “there aren’t enough people, we need to bring back the dead”? What utterly brain dead moron thinks stopping death, even just for the Uber rich, is a good or feasible idea.

In the immortal words of comic book guy, worst idea ever!

Submarine Exploring Titanic Wreckage Goes Missing;

newtboy says...

Absolutely…if the choice is extremely slow death suffocating in the frozen dark with your son/father or insta death so fast you never knew it was happening, it’s not really a choice, is it?

I can only imagine what it would have been like being alive in that sub waiting for rescue for 5 days. Hopefully they would have had a deck of cards to help pass the time. The outcome seems like a blessing rather than having to survive the circumstances which would have seemed like forever for them.

After the recent IPCC climate report an old 'Newsroom' clip

*doublepromote someone else finally telling the truth, even if it is just a fictional tv character. I’ve been saying the same thing since around 2000. If we went all in, halted all co2 emissions and all methane emissions 20 years ago, and invested in methods to catch and sequester what we already emitted, we might have avoided the tipping point where we are no longer in control….but instead we increased emissions every year, flooring it towards that cliff and hitting the nitrous button.
*quality if inconvenient truths

That tipping point was reached well over a decade ago when methane started to melt out of permafrost and the deep ocean where it has been frozen for eons. It’s capable of causing warming >80 times as much as co2 short term, >25 times as much long term, and is boiling out at rapidly increasing rates. Pre 2006 it’s estimated around .5 million tons per year…2006 it was measured at 3.8 million tons…by 2013 that was up to 17 million tons with the trend increasing. More recent estimates are hard to find, but it’s agreed that as temperatures climb not only are hydrates melting much more rapidly, bacteria are also accelerating decomposition in the thawed permafrost, and they emit methane. The Arctic is warming up to 5 times faster than the average global temperature. It’s likely over 50 million tons per year by now if not much higher.

Shakhova et al. (2008) estimate that not less than 1,400 gigatonnes (Gt=1 billion tons) of carbon is presently locked up as methane and methane hydrates under the Arctic submarine permafrost, and 5–10% of that area is subject to puncturing by open taliks. They conclude that "release of up to 50 Gt of predicted amount of hydrate storage [is] highly possible for abrupt release at any time". That would increase the methane content of the planet's atmosphere by a factor of twelve in one shot….game over.

Bear in mind, 1 cubic meter of hydrate contains >160 cubic meters of methane gas at atmospheric pressure.

The amount of increase from bacterial emissions in rotting permafrost is debatable, but even the lowest estimates are insurmountable.

This is only one of dozens of KNOWN feedback loops already in action, and there are definitely unknown feedback systems we can’t predict.

This does not mean there’s nothing to be done, we can still mitigate the damage somewhat, maybe slow the rate of change enough that some animals and plants more advanced than bacteria survive long term. It does mean a massive >99% culling of humanity, a total shift in civilization from a money based civilization to one focused on survival, and likely an unavoidable mass extinction rivaling any previous extinctions.

Does someone have a link to the famous drunken rant Orson Wells went off on about frozen peas? It's the one Pinky and the Brain make fun of.

Also, Casey Kasem's rant about the dead dog, which almost got Negativeland sued off the planet, is golden, too.

electric bill has soared after the winter storm in texas

Yep, Texas doesn't want that. Better frozen to death without water and on their own than federally regulated, that's Texas. How's that working out for them?
