Why Violent Video Games Don't Cause Violence | Today's Topic

RFlagg says...

Which is probably why they mentioned it in the video...

I think more telling is that the shootings and the like they say are caused by video games and violent movies seem to be unique to the US despite the games and media being prevent all over the world... sure Japan isn't as into FPS games, but they still sell there. Our violent gun movies, often outdone by movies made in other markets, do well all over. Yet the violence seems to come out just in the US. I think the people who blame video games and movies need to see what other factors may be contributing, be it the fact the US is the only nation not to have affordable health care or lack of gun control, a combo of those, or something else like some sort of odd cultural difference.

Evolution in action-The most wondrous drugs a combo of knowledge and will. I agree the conditions' torturous, fortunately for bi-poles, they create a world of support around them with their energy and charm...I have come to embrace this as a survival feature most interesting. Most patient with the most needy, to a fault sometimes....

This thought can be short-sighted. For every great musician, artist, etc who suffers from bipolar disorder, there are hundreds who don't produce excellent output due to their condition.

Most of my clients who suffer from this do not produce the creativity that is sometimes erroneously associated with this disorder. It is not a fun problem to have and I hardly think that it exists for a reason. It is rather torturous for those who suffer from it.

Notice Anything Odd in this Workout Video?

zor says...

No, I did see it before I commented. It was a combo of not seeing it at first and at the same time reading a couple of vague comments about pooping. I added the two together and simply concluded that at some point she must have pooped during the workout and I just couldn't see it! It's funny how the mind works.

Jeff Bliss interview , of Duncanville High School AMAZING!!!

MilkmanDan says...

Back when I was in High School (not all that long ago, mid 90s), I had a somewhat low opinion of some of my History/Government/Social Studies type classes. A lot of that was because they were *all* hired as teacher/coach combos. I felt like they had a tendency to phone in the teaching bit because what they were really there to do was the coaching. I still think there is a big mismatch between the amount of money and energy spent on sports programs versus academics in public schools.

However, as much as I scoffed at those teachers at the time, looking back they did some of the things this kid is suggesting quite well. They talked with us, discussed and debated issues that came up for whole class periods, trying to get opinions from everyone. They got me/us thinking about things. One of them gave us a project to watch a Hollywood movie about some historical event of our choice and then write and present a report about what facts they got right or wrong. Looking back, I'd have to say that it could have been a heck of a lot worse if they were just expected to teach to some arbitrary standardized test, and their jobs or at least salary depended on yearly improvement in test scores.

So, I think that @Yogi is right and that is probably more of an institutional failing than a bad teacher, although we don't really have any evidence one way or the other from the videos. In spite of thinking that his anger is perhaps directed a bit off of the most important target, he definitely comes across as more reasonable in this interview (which makes sense, he's had time to cool down and consider things more fully). Hope the school doesn't come down on him too hard, if at all.

Secrets From The Potato Chip Factory

chingalera says...

Small saucepan, into hot peanut oil add thinly sliced, small, new red potatoes(crispier the better); Cook to desired crispy/burntyness. Sprinkle with Tamari or Shoyu and from a shaker, add a dash of powdered wasabi, white, black, or red, or any combo of peppers to taste. MMMMMmmm...

YouTube Flickering Scrubber Issue in Chrome (Sift Talk Post)

radx says...

It's just the Chrome/Flash combo and embedded YouTube videos, right? HTML5 embeds working fine?

If so, you can either switch to HTML5 or try this workaround for the time being: deactivate hardware/GPU acceleration for both Flash and Chrome.

1) Add "--disable-accelerated-compositing" to your Chrome shortcut, so that it links to: /chrome.exe --disable-accelerated-compositing
2) Right-click on the video -> settings -> left-most tab -> uncheck hardware acceleration
3) Restart Chrome

Again, that's just a workaround until they fixed whatever is wrong with it.

Shelving System to Hide your Valuables, Guns & More Guns

spawnflagger says...

I think it's a fantastic piece of woodworking. Very clever design. The intent is to hide guns from thieves that break-in to his home (presumably when he isn't there, otherwise this guy would shoot them).

I also think he needs more books and less guns.

It wouldn't be too hard to add-in a hidden combo lock or key lock for customers that want an extra level of protection. If there are kids in the house, then every gun should have a trigger-lock (which kids might find the key anyway).

Main disadvantage I see of this design versus a gun safe would be that this is in no way fireproof or waterproof.
