your windows media player isn't playing those videos? Means that you need the right codecs.

K-lite codecs or CCCP codecs. Just search for codec packs and you'll find'em.

If you're getting sound and no video, then yeah, it's likely a codec issue.

I use media player classic to play media, because Windows Media Player is EVIL. A common missing codec is divx. You can use the program GSpot to help determine what codecs a video file uses.

Those are my three main software recommendations At some point I got frustrated trying to find all the individual codecs I needed and ended up using software that installs a whole bunch, but it was a while ago now and I'm not sure if there are better options available.

You're equating Communism to the Soviet Union, which is entirely erroneous. The arms race and totalitarianism of the CCCP had nothing to do with the tenets of Communism.
