At one point, Helen sued the studio for stealing from her, but by the time she did it, her fame had dwindled and the fame of the cartoon character had soared.

Here's a page with some interesting background about Betty Boop. The woman who Betty was based on, and the woman who did her original voice, looked very much like the Betty Boop character.
