World Drift Series in China 2008

mizume says...

This was a terrible drift video. As a short piece about a few guys having fun doing dumb stuff, it's alright, but too long. The driving in this is done very poorly, and the video itself seems to be split between showing the driving and being highlights of a trip to Beijing. At first I thought they were TRYING to destroy the cars rather than drift, it was until watching more that I realized the drivers were actually trying. Pretty sad.

Passer-by Pushes Suicidal Man From Bridge (no one dies)

BEIJING (May 23) - Chen Fuchao, a man heavily in debt, had been contemplating suicide on a bridge in southern China for hours when a passer-by came up, shook his hand — and pushed him off the ledge.

Chen fell 26 feet onto a partially inflated emergency air cushion laid out by authorities and survived, suffering spine and elbow injuries, the official Xinhua News Agency said Saturday.

The passer-by, 66-year-old Lai Jiansheng, had been fed up with what he called Chen's "selfish activity," Xinhua said.

Traffic around the Haizhu bridge in the city of Guangzhou had been backed up for five hours and police had cordoned off the area.

"I pushed him off because jumpers like Chen are very selfish. Their action violates a lot of public interest," Lai was quoted as saying by Xinhua. "They do not really dare to kill themselves. Instead, they just want to raise the relevant government authorities' attention to their appeals."

Xinhua said Lai was "taken away by police" but did not elaborate.

A police officer who answered the telephone Saturday at a station close to the bridge confirmed the incident and said it was under investigation. He refused to give any other details and hung up.

According to Xinhua, Chen wanted to kill himself because he had accrued $290,000 in debt from a failed construction project.

On Thursday, he made his way to the Haizhu bridge, where 11 other people have tried to take their lives since April.

Lai volunteered to talk Chen down but was turned away by police, Xinhua said. Lai then broke through the cordon, climbed to where Chen sat, greeted him with a handshake, then pushed.

Photos in the Beijing Morning Post showed Lai, shoeless and in a T-shirt, saluting after Chen fell.

The paper said Lai was released on bail Friday but did not give any details. It said he had been on medication for "a mental illness" for decades and had been on his way to a hospital for his pills.

Chen was recovering in the hospital, Xinhua said.

My friend's new roommate is from Beijing. His name is Bohao, but it was decided (I'm not certain by who) that his American name should be Albert. Because, damnit, we just can't deal with that shit!

Fuck that - Bohao is an awesome name.

Maybe Beijing Vantone, the tower's first tenant, didn't like intended name.

Omg, you conspiracy nuts never stop. Why would having the first tenant be a huge corporation from mainland China have anything to do with it not being Freedom Tower? China's stand on civil rights and freedoms is well known and...

Inaccurate transliterations are annoying (Blog Entry by jwray)

Well, that makes sense, that pinyin means phonetic. That means Hanyu pinyin just means "phonetically represented Chinese" which is all it is. I remember the uproar when China went to using Hanyu Pinyin in all official communication and lots of Americans were pissed. Peking was better than Beijing, Sian was better than Xi'an, and so on. But it's consistent. And when someone all of a sudden makes me read Wade-Giles instead of Pinyin, it's so hard. I mean, Chinese is hard for me in general, but at least if it is written in full Pinyin with the tone symbols, I can say it--I have no chance if it isn't consistent.

My understanding is that Chinese character keyboards start with the roots of the characters and then add embellishments. I don't know for sure, but I have watched people type in Chinese characters as quickly as I can type in alphabetic things.

Street Food - Beijing's Changing Food Culture

One odd thing about Beijing is that McDonald's, KFC, Starbucks, and Pizza Hut are actually incredibly expensive relative to traditional restaurants and eateries. But they are still very popular.

As far as digital goes, seeing as so many of you in the States use cable, then I would imagine the switch wouldn't mean as much.

Here in Australia, we still aren't up to the full switch over date, but I've been using digital set top boxes/pvrs for the past few years and am UTTERLY sold on digital transmission vs Analogue. Why?

Upsides
* Reception: Much better reception. With the same signal strength that would provide fuzzy, ghosting images in analogue, the digital signal is crystal clear. A friend's moved into a house and was getting only a couple of channels, and those poorly. When I went over I discovered that there was no aerial cable, just the cord going into the wall which would end in an open termination. I gave her an old set top box... voila, all stations in great quality... using NO AERIAL, just the aerial cable connected to nothing!

* Clarity: Over and above the better reception, the image, whether SD or HD, is just clearer and more vibrant... very nice to watch.

* EPG: The channels transmit up to a week's worth of program information, so you can bring that up, find the shows you want and set them to tape automatically on your....

* PVR: Having a digital signal means it's far easier to record to a digital media... hence PVRs, hence no more tapes, hence having a nicely catalogued set of recordings... hence, we pretty much never watch anything 'live' on TV anymore... record everything and watch it when we have free time.

* More channels: Sort of... here in Australia we only have 5 main stations (ABC (government run), SBS (multicultural etc.), 7,9,10 (commercial stations)). Now, the ABC has ABC2 with extra shows, many great, and the other stations sometimes actually show different things on their HD channels vs their SD channels (although things are about to change). The much heralded ability to have multiple views of sports etc. has never eventuated... could have been used to GREAT effect during the Beijing Olympics, but noooo, one channel, forced to watch what they want you to... so this plus point is only minor. (Although ABC2 is great)

Downsides?
* Rather than having a slow degradation of image quality if you don't have signal strength, you instead get digital breakup, which is far worse.

I love digital tv, and only wish the stations would use it better than they do.
