How to respond to bigotry with tolerance and integrity.
In general, there's a pretty friendly rivalry between the two countries, mostly around sport (we beat them at rugby, they beat us at cricket).
But the countries are actually politically and culturally pretty close, and there's a real sense of comradeship in relation to shared military history (see ANZACs).
All that said, there are some genuine issues of contention, especially right now. The two countries both allow citizens of the other to live and work there. Given that Australia is the larger economy, this mostly means kiwis going to Aussie looking for work.
So there is a perception among some Australians that Kiwis are somehow both stealing their jobs and also lazy dole bludgers (hey, no one said bigots had to be internally consistent).
In fact, this is completely the opposite of reality. Australians who come to NZ are basically NZ citizens in all but name. They are entitled to unemplyoment benefit, whereas Kiwis in Australia do not have the same benefits.
There is also currently an issue around detention and deportation of Kiwis, where Kiwis in Australia (many of whom have lived most of their lives in Australia) who have been committed of crimes are being deported back to NZ after completing their sentences. This often means they are held in refugee-style detention centres while awaiting deportation and are being sent back to a country away from their families.
In this specific instance, I'm guessing it's because the kid in the video is of Maori or Polynesian descent.
Disclaimer: I'm an Irish guy living in NZ who spent two years in Sydney, so this is a slightly outsider take.
Wait... so Australian's have a big problem with people from New Zealand?...
I was a little confused by this? Is this just her unique bigotry or is this a semi-common theme?
I sort of assumed she meant anyone not white.
Big Ship Launches Good and Bad
Fascinating.
* Why are so many done side on? Seems to be fraught with great danger for the ship, the first one has a huge amount of water flow up onto its deck. The ones done front on seem much smoother
* The one on the tubes may look dangerous, but it worked very smoothly indeed compared to some of the others.
* The low quality of the front first one making the large wave... me thinks those people laugh just a little too damn much. And where the hell are the engineers etc. telling people NOT to stand there? (and the others with the same issue). Someone is going to get swept off and killed during one of those.
* How incredibly, incredibly heartbreaking must the last one have been. ALL that work by SO many people... gone, just like that.
Terrible.
But great video. Ships of that size fascinate me. I worked on the ANZAC frigates for a while as a student engineer, and I was in hog heaven being around all those MASSIVE bits of steel, and being able to climb around inside half finished ships. Amazing engineering.
Redgum "I Was Only Nineteen" (1983)
Redgum:I Was Only Nineteen
From LyricWiki
This song is performed by Redgum.
This song has been covered under the title I Was Only 19 by The Herd.
Mum and Dad and Denny saw the passing-out parade at Puckapunyal
It was a long march from cadets.
The sixth battalion was the next to tour, and it was me who drew the card.
We did Canungra, and Shoalwater before we left.
And Townsville lined the footpaths as we marched down to the quay
This clipping from the paper shows us young and strong and clean.
And there's me in my slouch hat with me SLR and greens.
God help me, I was only nineteen.
From Vung Tau, riding Chinooks, to the dust at Nui Dat -
I've been in and out of choppers now for months.
But we made our tents a home, VB and pinups on the lockers
And an Asian orange sunset through the scrub.
And can you tell me, doctor, why I stil can't get to sleep?
And night-time's just a jungle dark, and a barking M16?
And what's this rash that comes and goes, can you tell me what it means?
God help me, I was only ninteen.
A four week operation when each step could mean your last one on two legs.
It was a war within yourself.
But you wouldn't let your mates down 'til they had you dusted off,
So you closed your eyes and thought about something else.
Then someone yelled out "Contact!" and the bloke behind me swore.
We hooked in there for hours, then a God-almighty roar.
And Frankie kicked a mine the day that mankind kicked the moon,
God help me, he was going home in June.
I can still see Frankie drinking tinnies in the Grand Hotel
On a thirty-six hour rec leave in Vung Tau.
And I can still hear Frankie lying screaming in the jungle
Til the morphine came and killed the bloody row.
And the Anzac legends didn't mention mud and blood and tears.
And the stories that my father told me never seemed quite real.
I caught some pieces in my back that I didn't even feel.
God help me, I was only nineteen.
And can you tell me, doctor, why I still can't get to sleep?
And why the Channel Seven chopper chills me to my feet?
And what's this rash that comes and goes, can you tell me what it means?
God help me, I was only nineteen.
GameTraders Robina!! (Blog Entry by dag)
In honor of ANZAC day, I believe everyone should upvote this video: http://www.videosift.com/video/McDonalds-giving-lonely-veterans-free-coffee-refills
For ANZAC Day, "The Band Played Waltzing Matilda"
I don't know if anybody cares but...
The ANZAC memorial in Sydney is the most beautiful building I've ever been in or around. If you ever find yourself in Sydney for whatever reason, you should think of checking it out. Words really don't do it justice. In fact, the pictures you can find on the internet don't really do it justice either.

Happy ANZAC day, are there even any WW1 vets left in Australia????

Comment hidden because you are ignoring dag. (show it anyway)
Probably is a bit unclear. Allow me to rephrase:
I was going to go in and get some video footage- and ask them if their recent Internet celebrity has added to their profits. But today is ANZAC day and therefore the whole Robina Town Centre was closed. (Except for the Cinema - saw Forgetting Sarah Marshal)
McDonalds: giving lonely veterans free coffee refills
What a crock, as an Aussie it really pisses me off when crap like this comes up. ANZAC stands for Australian and New Zealand Army Corp, well done to McDonald's for trying to exploit a part of the Aussie culture. Just a cheap stunt to make their corporation appear to give a toss about anything other than their bottom line.
Final scene from Gallipoli: A movie about Australia's Alamo
Bloody Brits used us (ANZACs) as cannon-fodder at Gallipoli. We attacked the heavily fortified hills while the Brits went around the side and the generals literally had cups of tea.
Final scene from Gallipoli: A movie about Australia's Alamo
I'll upvote as it's a superb movie, and hey, it's almost ANZAC day, but come on, that was a pretty bad choice of clip, not exactly lively.
Australia's Worst Drought In A Century: Environmental Crisis
Actually - I just spoke to someone in Sydney and its pissing with rain - the whole city is flooded and they might have to cancel the ANZAC parade! Only problem - the rain isn't falling anywhere near the reservoirs or the Murray-Darling Basin!!!!
