I'm a die hard Firefox fan b/c I love the extensions. Two of the ones I can't live without are Flashblock and Adblock Plus.

Whenever I'm at a friend's house and I have to hear "CONGRATULATIONS YOU'VE JUST BECOME OUR MILLIONTH VISITOR!!!" followed quickly by something that needs my credit card info I always stop what I'm doing, download firefox, adblock plus, and flashblock; and it keeps me from losing my mind. Until I read Throbbin's comments that is.

Firefox. The reason? Extensions, namely noscript, xmarks, adblock plus, and others.

Also memory consumption.

I do like Chrome though, and may switch to it someday.

Oh, and Opera should be an option on this poll.

Opera is an option on this poll, with seamonkey and all that other jazz.>> ^NetRunner:

I was a Firefox for a long time and switched to Chrome some months ago. There were a few things that made me hold out, like the access of bookmarks, but Chrome has gotten up to speed and there are plenty of plugins for it too now. It's not quite as flexible as firefox, but it shows the pages fast and the design is better - I like minimalism.

The new firefox 4 beta is looking interesting though,

I use Firefox here - followed by Chrome on occasion. Firefox wins because of extensions and the awesome bar. Mainly using the latest beta version which falls apart sometimes but is generally solid.

RedSky says...

Chrome, mainly because ripping off tabs, especially with playing videos in them and resizing them is damn useful! Also speed. I dunno about the new Firefox beta, but every version before that suffered from infuriatingly jerky videos. Chrome doesn't have this problem and also tends to slow down less when you pile on more tabs.

Throbbin says...

Chrome is nice and fast, simple, fast, lightweight, and fast.

Also, little things like the 'Open New Tab' option at the top when I right click something, rather than just below 'Open New Window'. I like that.

By my testing and the testing of others, Chrome isn't particularly lightweight -- it uses more memory than any of the other 4 major browsers, especially when you have lots of tabs (and I'm crazy with tabs).

RedSky says...

Depends on what you mean by that, by actual open tab memory usage Firefox does very well, but what Chrome seems to excel in is not acting as a memory sink after you've closed a lot of tabs, which means it virtually never gets chuggy like Firefox does after you use it for a while:

Honestly, the only reason I ever go back to Firefox anymore is to download flash videos, since the Internet Download Manager plugin for Chrome is buggy but works fine for Firefox.

I find it kind of hilarious that out of 41 votes so far, not a single person is admitting that they use IE. I mean, I know that browsers like Firefox and Chrome have made a significant dent in IE's market share, but I'm still pretty sure that if you looked at the Sift's server logs, they'd tell a slightly different story.

Throbbin says...

It may be that folks are watching vids at work. I've worked in many offices (mostly Government) that only offered IE and didn't allow employees to install software. As soon as folks get home, I'm guessing they use their browser of choice.>> ^dag:

Really, IE gets zero votes? Server stats beg to differ.

dgandhi says...

While server stats show that folks are using IE on the site, I wonder how many registered users are using IE,. Folks just floating by will count for hits, and statistically will be using IE, but the kind of geek that register at the sift, I would not be surprised if it were closer to the vote.

I didn't get her in time to vote, but I surf with chrome and use FF when I'm doing web-dev because firebug blows chromes devel tool out of the water.
