Let's Get This Straight
The phrase "10 pounds of shit in a 5 pound bag" is nonsense. If the bag is half the weight of the load it is to be holding, it should have no problem doing so (unless you're stuffing a very low density, non-compressible material into the bag, or the bag is made of something heavy and inelastic). Let's stomp this phrase along with the other phrases people utter without realizing how stupid they sound.
So from now on, when using a hyperbole to describe something being overfilled, or full to the max, say "10 gallons of shit in a 5 gallon bag".

Comment hidden because you are ignoring dag. (show it anyway)
I have never heard of this phrase either - but on hearing it, I thought that a "5 pound bag" would be a bag that is rated for holding 5 pounds. Much like fishing line that can be "5 pound test" line. So, 10 pounds of shit in a 5 pound bag - while it may physically fit - could cause the bag to split and break.
*raises hand*
I'd like to add myself and my husband to the list of people who had never heard of this phrase before now.
never heard it....but the phrase 'same difference' throws me into a recursive thought-spiral that causes nose bleeds....
Yes I think thats the point of this phrase. Its that you have to much shit to handle.
I have herd it before. Heres one for you brought to you by my late and great Grandpa Brown.
It goes like this he literally said this to me once.
"Boy I tell you what it was raining like a cow with two pumps pissing on a flat rock!" enjoy.
P.S. It was.

Maybe it's primarily a construction colloquialism in my area. I hear it a lot. Dag, I've thought about your idea too. But, really aren't bags usually rated by volume? I guess it'd have to be rated by volume AND weight.
10lbs of shit in a bag that only has capacity for 5. The rest of the shit is spilling over. Like ctrlaltbleach said, too much shit to handle.
Its a very old saying. I heard it as 10 pounds of potatoes in a five pound bag or a " Blivet". As in a big girls ass in tight jeans.
Whoa ..Dude check that Blivit!
HuH??
10 lbs of of potatoes in a 5 lb sack, you little dumbass! now get back to work and fetch me that 2 x 4.
circa 1980.

Per Urban Dictionary, Blivets are not good. Which is how I remember the term used. Yours sounds more like an Apple Bottom.
[edit] And it appears that is was originally that way because the military used it.

very familiar with the 10lbs in a 5lb saying, I always thought it was a southern saying like these other fab ones:
"you hit the nail on the head"
"wide open as a paper sack"
"nervous as a whore in church"
"jumpy as a long tail cat in a room full of rocking chairs"
"tight as dick's hat band"
"six of one, half a dozen of the other"
The way I was using it also meant "Not good". The person saying it wasnt pointing out a nice ass to ogle, he was pointing out a blivet to be laughed at or ridiculed. People who use terms like Blivet, dont useally have good things to say.

"He got knocked flatter then a popcorn fart"
