A proper oath of office?
I do solemnly affirm that I will execute the Office of President of the United States, and will to the best of my ability, preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States.
So help you God?
No.

As a skeptical atheist, it would be more logical to pretend to believe in God, allowing access to the control over the masses religion affords.
If not, does it mean you're worried about offending a god you don't believe exists?
Hehe, I can understand that argument, QM, but I'm more worried about offending my own sense of morals, when I say outright lies just to sway other people's minds. This is probably why I could never be a politician.
in texas, its illegal for an atheist to hold public office.
It's not Texas only...
Those laws are meaningless as federal law would trump them were a nontheist to ever run for office. Unfortunately, this whole scenario is entirely moot as a nontheist doesn't have a snowman's chance in hell to win in California*, Massachusetts, or New York, let alone the midwestern and southern states that have these laws.
*with the exception of Pete Stark (D - CA)
that would absolutely suck.
^That he said no? Naw man, it would rock.
For once a man would actually be in charge of the white house, instead of just being a sockpuppet for "god". "God came to me and told me to invade Iraq" is bullcrap, you invaded Iraq. I'd like to see people in power actually take responsibility for their actions.

please give me one example of a president saying "god told me to invade iraq, so i did." its been a while since we've had a president who's been a direct "sockpuppet" for god (politely asking that you don't put it in quotes. its called respect) but more of just acting on good morals in the name of religion.
"...the former Palestinian foreign minister Nabil Shaath says Mr Bush told him and Mahmoud Abbas, former prime minister and now Palestinian President: "I'm driven with a mission from God. God would tell me, 'George, go and fight those terrorists in Afghanistan.' And I did, and then God would tell me, 'George go and end the tyranny in Iraq,' and I did."
The Independent
I'm sorry if you feel offended, white, but I have no respect for God just as I have no respect for genies. I suppose my quotes should have been around "sockpuppet for God".

^That's how I roll.
