Phonebloks

BicycleRepairMan says...

Like others have pointed out, I don't see this actually working, its an idea with no feasible working theory behind it. Reminds me of Karl Pilkingtons idea of a watch that counts down to your time of death, and Ricky Gervais asked him how it could work, he said "You just pop it on your wrist."

Employee at Publix Follows Kids Around the Store

shang says...

definitely not racist, I used to work in loss prevention for a department store, and we followed around anyone with large bag, backpack, duffel, or sweatpants with large pockets, etc. the store is not public property and management can refuse to serve anyone for any reason. And if the eye in sky sees someone recording on smartphones, or something funky going on even if it's legit, they would call a loss prevention guy like me to tail them and make sure all is well. If I saw funky bulges, or caught them red handed stealing I used my radio and notifed security so when person went to exit store they were grabbed and wrist tied with plastic ties until police arrived. But most times I just kept eyes on our merchandise until they got what they needed and left, regardless of race, sex, etc.

that loss prevention worker is doing a great job

How-to Disarm a Gunman

How-to Disarm a Gunman

bareboards2 says...

One thing that happens with the technique shown is how quickly the gun is actually turned towards the gunner.

I took a self defense class once and they introduced us to the techniques for dealing with armed assailants. It was NOT a complete course, it was just a glimpse.

Breaking the wrist, hanging on for dear life, and pointing the gun towards the assailant will get the gunner shot, not you.

This was also a self defense class for women, when it is not the money that is the target, it is yourself. Which means the assailant will indeed be very close to you. Every situation is different, as has been noted on this comment stream. So even though I am not fully trained in dealing with a situation like this, I do have that little factoid tucked away -- get the gun pointed towards the gunner.

Dream Job

ghark says...

Why would he be banned, that seemed pretty awesome? Hrmm time to go check out the reddits.

edit: ok found the post on Reddit from the guy who apparently made this:

Hey there, I'm the friend in question (and the other half of Funny Shorts, for those that didn't make the connection). A couple things:
1) It wasn't DWA, it was DreamWorks Studios, on the live-action side of things.
2) I was only given a slap on the wrist over the phone. It was my college that received a phone call saying I'd never get a job there after that.
3) All the people I met at Dreamworks were, and still are, AWESOME! And I mean that sincerely. I hold no hard feelings whatsoever for the reaction to the video. It was an entirely valid response.I mean, I put their CEO AND ONE OF THE MOST RESPECTED DIRECTORS IN THE WORLD in it, without permission, as if we were BFFs. That deserves an extreme reaction, one way or the other. I was sort of hoping for the other, but still, totally valid.
4) I'm not sure that I can prove that this happened, really. Hopefully people can just enjoy the video regardless? It has the Jurrasic Park theme in it, guys. How can we listen to that and not all get along?

The Importance Of Roughhousing With Your Kids

PlayhousePals says...

The only time I remember anything remotely [playful] roughhouse-y with MY male parental unit was during a big storm on a Columbus Day when "dear old dad" took my sister and I out on the front lawn to swing us around by the wrists in 60+ MPH winds. Good times? Better than a beating!

Police perform illegal house-to-house raids in Boston

Darkhand says...

It ab-so-FUCKING-lutely was mandatory. I have a friend who lives directly in that area and he was driving home from work. The police pulled him over, TOSSED Him out of his car, pinned him to the ground and (his words not mine) "Almost broke my wrist".

Is that VOLUNTARY? Unless you were there don't assume things.

The mayor of Boston asked for the public's cooperation in staying home so law enforcement could do their job. By no means was it mandatory. I went out for a run at about 1:00pm in Cambridge, across the Mass Ave Bridge, along the Esplanade, and back past the Cambridge Police HQ. There weren't many people out, but there were definitely some. I was never stopped or asked for my identification, even though I ran past police officers. If you're talking about Watertown specifically, though, I can't say what it was like over there.

I think we're in agreement that the home searches were valid. I'd be interested to see if any of the homes refused the search, and on what grounds.

Voice Input is The Future of Gaming

EvilDeathBee says...

Oh yeah, still definitely is. I meant when they were touting motion controls for the first time, like this is jokingly doing, except Nintendo were serious.

Motion controls will always suck because simply put, there's zero feedback in what you're doing, and there is no precision at all. Anything that requires precision and timing, it's utterly worthless.

At a previous studio I worked at, we made a Wii exclusive game and had jump as shake on the wiimote, after attempts to try and flick in the specific direction you wanted to jump in. What a disaster that was. Then there was flick up, that didn't work either so in the end we went with random shake and even then it was pretty clear, pretty quickly that even this was annoying, but we left it in. In the sequel we had the option to use A as jump (by default), it was much kinder on the wrist.

Was? (2nd usage)

Still is, at least until something decent is produced.

In saying that, I don't see how a lot of quality action games could solely use motion detection, as they would tire the player pretty quickly. Limited bits and pieces of motion detection or voice could be beneficial.

Kid & his Robohand! (!!DAY 3!!)

peter12 says...

My first thought: This looks shitty for an expensive hand prosthesis. But it's meant to be simple and robust as well as easy to rebuild.
No sensors are build in, it works a lot simpler: By bending the wrist fingers flex.
As far as I understood, design will be in public domain in the future.

What is the right way to grip the Steering Wheel

lucky760 says...

I recall seeing the cover of a Popular Mechanics (or Popular Science) magazine from over 100 years ago and it mentioned how the best way to hold a steering wheel with with both hands at 6 o'clock with wrists facing up.
