Are You a Psychopath? Take the Test

harlequinn says...

They might as well have said "you can magically stop the train simply by murdering any random stranger".

The scary thing is not detecting a lack of emotions in some people, it's detecting emotions in people whilst they lie and say they would not sacrifice the fat guy.

In an ethics class I once attended, we were to imagine that there were two magic buttons, one "saves the whales" and kills a thousand random humans. The other kills all the whales and doesn't kill any humans. You have to press one button. Surprisingly I was the only one that killed all the whales (and saved the humans). I'd kill all the whales to save even one random human. And then I'd dine on whale burger (waste not want not). Everyone else was a traitor to humanity.

Interestingly I think most of the class were letting emotions choose their response, and it was the wrong response (IMO). This is the problem with these entirely convoluted situations, I don't think they are necessarily eliciting the best response. You might as well start them off with "you're in Wonderland..."

@jonny - I'm pretty much with you. These same "dilemmas" were presented to me in a college class (Psych? Philo?) and I objected to the 2nd one on the basis that I can't imagine a bystander fat enough to reliably stop a train, and if they were I wouldn't be able to push them off a ledge.

The TA that was teaching the class said that the idea is to just treat it like a Newtonian Physics problem (ie., everything is a frictionless sphere or make all assumptions to reduce complexity wherever possible). In the scenario, just accept that you KNOW that you are capable of pushing the dude off, that you KNOW he will stop the train, and that you KNOW that you have insufficient mass/strength to jump off yourself and stop the train.

I get how that limits the variables and therefore draws a more concrete difference between various answers to the situation, but to me it also limits the interest I have in the question. My brain doesn't work that way, my problem solving center engages automatically and tries to find pitfalls and assign success rates rather than just "assume this will work".

I think I'd rather see the situations / dilemmas reworked to have a more realistic expectation of success. Maybe something like a rampaging lion on the loose, and you can swing a door currently blocking a room with 1 person inside to instead block a room with 5 people inside (situation 1); or you are above a hallway with a lion running towards 5 people and have an opportunity to push somebody into the lion's path which would give the 5 people enough time to run out of the hall and lock a door (situation 2). I think my "hungry lion" dilemmas have fewer physics pitfalls than the traditional train dilemmas.

NRA: The Untold Story of Gun Confiscation After Katrina

chingalera says...

The Fed and the World Bank can only fuck the world because of the illusory stranglehold they have on the cattle-We believe their paper to be of value and that the system works. Hard to rally behind a rout of criminals in their palaces when food and fuel isn't available just like it's hard for a majority of citizens to mount a physical campaign on Washington for a protest.....logistics.

These measures to add incrementally, additional features, capacities, etc. to existing laws??? To avoid accusations of a totalitarian crackdown, you know the routine and those who would that the United States be gun-free zone have plenty of time and money and the fucking media in their pocket.

Get me started on the privilege of driving? I daily see morons who, if the required tests for a driving license sane, would be riding a fucking unicycle to work. This includes you dumb-asses who stay on your fucking cell the bulk of the time you spend in your vehicle. I live in a city with over 6 million people, 150 square miles in the county, and everyone owns a car. Fucking nightmare of imbeciles on the road DAILY, plenty of whom should not be allowed to carry a loaded, 2-3 ton killing machine.

What was it Al Pacino said in "Heat??"....You get killed walking your doggy!"

Real simple for me: Hire police and create soldiers out of unhinged fucks who have control and power issues and give THEM guns?? Until my saliva can be used to melt steel or some unifying event turns the world into an idyllic wonderland of brotherly love, Guns. Explosives. Pointy fucking sticks. To protect ourselves from defective assholes and should the need ever arise, we'll make our decision then.

The world becomes increasingly more chaotic and non-linear by the hour...embrace it. We live in one of the most incredible times in human history and the planet my children inherit will be unrecognizable very soon and all change is quite a good thing.

Are Star Trek and Star Wars Mutually Exclusive? (Geek Talk Post)

Sagemind says...

Oh, and books, lots of books.

Read to them lots and let them see you reading - that's how they will learn and not know they're learning.

All the good stuff from Alice in Wonderland, Narnia, Wizard of Oz.
As they start to read, get all the early readers based on super heroes, star wars and all the geek stuff. Make sure you stick to variety or they'll get bored and you'll lose them.

Zizek: Only Foreigners Should Vote. Discuss.

America is supposed to be that wonderland that everyone aspires to become - only it isn't.
The people around the world still hold on to that idea. By asking them to vote - they would project their vision of the ideal country upon the USA, instead of having the already jaded and defeated population do the voting.
It's always easier to see something from the outside.

The "jaded and defeated population" don't vote.

I can get a BBQ meatball sandwich delivered to my house if'n I don't feel like bothering with putting my shoes on. Just about any kind of food I desire is available to me. When I'm feeling olympic and must forage for food, I have my choice of 6 large chain grocery stores within three miles of my home. I have a car. I can go anywhere I please in this country without fear. I have 240 channels (60 HD) on my television. There's a convenience store two minutes in every direction from just about every square foot of this country (seemingly). I can hike in the wilderness far from "civilization" and not have to worry about bandits or terrorists, and because I have the entire fricking world in the palm of my hand, I'll never get lost. I don't have a computer. I have four computers with high speed access. I have running water; hot water on tap, a microwave, and more goddamn dishes and silverware and towels and t-shirts than any one person should ever need. I can go see the Blazers play, watch live jazz, a choice of music festivals during the spring and summer, live theater, short trip west to the beautiful Oregon coast, or trip south for the Timber Festival or one of several plays in Ashland at the Shakespearean Festival. When I opt to go see a movie over reading any damn book in the world on my Kindle, there's seven movie theaters in my area, and I can even afford the insane prices for soda and Raisenets. Education opportunities abound here, regardless of your age or income. You can learn how to fly a plane at several local small airports, or jump out of one. I have a "headphone drawer".

I make less money than the average American, and I'm RICH, and thankful that I was so damn lucky to be born in the United States of Wonderland.

Looks like another crappy remake by Tim Burton. Ruined Planet of the Apes. Ruined Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. Ruined Alice in Wonderland. Next…

I really don't think he ruined Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, it was very close to the characters and storyline of the book, the first one was more an adaptation

Yeah, I enjoyed the new Charlie and the Chocolate Factory movie. They're both enjoyable

I like how we are being all buddy buddy now. It makes my face rupture with smiles galore. Often I think maybe I should save my down vote for after a video sifts, but that really requires a lot of after thought on my part. I am not great with work after the fact. I am more of an impulse voter.
