Japanese Pool Player Gives Great Interview

glyphs says...

Haha, OK. It's funny, but I'm unclear as to whether or not you guys are making fun of me or not.
At this point I'm still recovering from the effects of dealing with the storm of memories that flooded my brain after maniacally confirming that the sift indeed did "break up" with me.
I love this website because everyone posts such amazing stuff and in truth I have felt guilty for not contributing to the community more, but I'm not that good at that, so I'll try and do better. Wasn't there a dude on here called chaosengine from NZ who used to comment a lot what happened to that guy?
Anyway, thanks for not banning me because I really love this place.
I never created an account before because I'm a bit wary of speaking up because people here be cray cray [sarcasm] and public vilification is terrifying, despite the anonymity (so, yes I'm a real person).

Bill Nye: You Can’t Ignore Facts Forever

Trancecoach says...

My doctorate is in psychology -- a social science, which includes coursework in epistemology. I am also the executive director of a peer reviewed psychology Journal which incorporates quantitative, qualitative, and mixed method methodologies.

If science was driven purely by consensus, than the upending of long-held scientific understanding (as achieved by the likes of Galileo, or Darwin, or Einstein -- who, incidentally, upended some theories about how something as "self-evident" as gravity works -- in more notable ways and by lesser known scientists in still significant ways) would never come about. Science is not practiced by "votes," whereby the majority determines what theories are most accurate. Rather, evidence (whether it be rationally deduced, rationally induced, empirically demonstrated, or hermeneutically interpreted) serves as the basis for scientific progress, whether the majority of scientists agree with it or not.

(Climate change, itself, is rationally deduced, since empirical models of the earth are so difficult if not impossible to design, let alone run controlled trials.)

You are actually going a long way to make my point that those who are "believers" in climate change are missing the value and indeed necessity for ongoing skepticism in the scientific literature (rather than the name-calling and vilification that constitutes much of the "OMG! Climate Change!" discourse of late). That point, along with illuminating some of the citations I linked to above, is the purpose of my comment -- and not to argue (or name-call or "debate" as many on the sift waste their time doing).

I do concur that the manner in which I posted the links may not have been "fair," and so I apologize for that, but the content of the links themselves raise significant questions as to the unilateral "belief" in "OMG! [andropogenic] Climate Change!" I encourage anyone who is seriously interested in the scientific basis for skepticism around such a belief, to consider reviewing the literature cited in those links before arriving at an incontrovertible conclusion.

But in light of your request for a single link, I recommend you visit the NPCC's website and perhaps attend, specifically, to their literature about temperature changes (PDF), which I believe serve as valid refutations of the literature upon which the climate change "believers" tend to base their adrenal-freakouts.

How the Media Failed Women in 2013

JiggaJonson says...

@Trancecoach
@vadeosaft

I agree with you on a lot of these points about men, but you are using the vilification/ignorance surrounding the portrayals of men in the media to justify the portrayal of women in the media. Neither set of stereotypes is preferable, but justifying one bad portrayal by saying "men have it just as bad or worse" doesn't make for a good argument.

@Stu
I don't know what you're referring to. Here is what I found:
http://www.esquire.com/blogs/culture/emily-ratajkowski-interview-blurred-lines
This?
That's not really an explanation of what the song is about. And if it's supposed to be poking fun at those types of stereotypes, I feel they did a poor job. Come on, this is a far cry from A Modest Proposal in terms of sarcastic social criticism.

bareboards2 says...

@renatojj I agree that the vilification of "profit" is also bad. I roll my eyes all the time at silly stuff I read that uses the word "profit" like the very word is sin incarnate. After all, wages are the "profit" of your labor, right?

Everyone wants theirs. I'm so tired of the finger pointing. It's always the other guy, for some people.

And. The pursuit of profit by shipping jobs overseas, @snoozedoctor, is short sighted pursuit of profit at the expensive of the health of our society. And our environment -- cheap goods means more crap in the landfill, more wasted resources.

It is a complex topic that cannot be solved in soundbites and protest banners. And the sooner we can step back from an "adversarial" relationship, the better, yeah?

One Pissed Off Democrat in Michigan Speaks Up

bareboards2 says...

I listened to my conservative brother grouse about the terrible unions for decades. He is a highly educated, highly skilled ex-military pilot with a masters degree in aerospace engineering.

And then he got his dream job, doing exactly what he wanted on a military contract, teaching Air Force pilots to fly a new plane in a simulator.

He was in hog heaven, making great money doing the thing he loved.

Then he found out that the wages he was getting paid were "low for the area." The "prevailing wage" was much higher.

He was thiiiis close to being the union shop steward.

When I mocked him (I had to, mean come on!!!) about joining a union, he said -- you don't understand. We have some government agency negotiating our contract and they did a crappy job.

Yeah, so, what you are saying is you want to band together and get a better wage? As a group? You want to have some power?

It still cracks me up. The side benefit is -- he can never ever grouse about unions again. Because when it was HIS paycheck, suddenly he got all socialist.

Because it isn't socialism -- it is the height of capitalism, really. Except the "capital" isn't money, it is information and time and skill of the worker.

I do not understand why labor is held as such low regard, while we all bow down to the God of Capital. It is such a one-sided way to look at a complicated, entwined economic system. And as I said above, it will be death of corporations. They need healthy prosperous workers as part of the engine of the economy.

Nothing is perfect in this world. But the vilification of labor is a bad bad thing.

Does it bother you that a high % of sifted videos are straight from Reddit? (User Poll by rottenseed)

ChaosEngine says...

>> ^Fletch:

>> ^pumkinandstorm:
I use reddit as well as probably 50 other sources to look for videos. I go through all these sites every day and spend hours looking for suitable videos.

Sorry, but that's just fucking sad.

At the risk of vilification, I have to say that I had a similar reaction to that statement. If someone says the "spend hours looking for suitable videos", it's hard not to imagine them as some sort of needy shut-in. Having read her comments, I'm reasonably sure that @pumpkinandstorm is not like that, but the stereotype certainly formed in my head.

In short, even if I wouldn't have put it in those words, I can see where Fletch is coming from.

Pornography Myths (Femme Talk Post)

9410 says...

MYTH NUMBER THE FIRST.

I don't know if porn really cultivates good relationships, but in my experience it doesn't particularly damage them either. It depends entirely on the person...I know peeps that watch porn for the terrible plots, for comedy more than for arousal.

MYTH NUMBER THE SECOND.

True enough, some Men appreciate the male body

MYTH NUMBER THE THIRD.

This one I agree with as well. I've known people who have been addicted to porn, it happens on rare occasions. I've also known people who have ruined their lives through alcohol. As ever, its all about moderation.

FOUR

Its a Myth.

FIFTH

Yeah, I don't really think that masturbating to a red head or blonde is going to make a guy less likely to cheat on his brunette. However, some people make polygamous relationships work. Fantasising about a girl in a porno is ok even in a monogamous relationship as long as your partner is ok with it. (rare I know, but still...)

SIX

Some people can make valuable careers out of it. I'm not sure I'd want my daughter doing it, but you know, lets dismiss the myth that the porn industry is a wasted career.

SEVEN

Ha! When you meet a man that uses this one stay the fuck away

EIGHT

Hard to say, I guess you'll never know until you're a porn star.

NINE

Its a fantasy for me!

I certainly don't think porn is destroying society, and I don't think it has to be especially sexist or demeaning of women either. I don't think I'd want porn, or even sex, to become a conversation topic over dinner, I still want it to remain a little scandalous, but I do tire of the constant vilification of pornography. A massive percentage of males regularly watch pornography, and we aren't all a bad bunch. The fact that a relatively small amount of women watch porn is perhaps because so much of it is targeted at men, and this is perhaps because the entire concept of porn doesn't appeal to most women.

Reel Bad Arabs: How Hollywood Vilifies a People

gwaan says...

Out of around 1000 Hollywood films that have Arab and Muslim characters (from the year 1896 to 2000) 12 were positive depictions, 52 were even handed and the other 900 plus were negative.

This groundbreaking documentary dissects a slanderous aspect of cinematic history that has run virtually unchallenged form the earliest days of silent film to today's biggest Hollywood blockbusters. Featuring the acclaimed author of "Reel Bad Arabs", Dr. Jack Shaheen, the film explores a long line of degrading images of Arabs and Muslims - from Bedouin bandits and submissive maidens to sinister sheikhs and gun-wielding "terrorists" - along the way offering devastating insights into the origin of these stereotypical images, their development at key points in US history, and why they matter so much today.

Dr Shaheen shows how the persistence of these images over time has served to naturalize prejudicial attitudes toward Arabs and Arab and Islamic culture, in the process reinforcing a narrow view of individual Arabs and the effects of specific US domestic and international policies on their lives. By inspiring critical thinking about the social, political, and basic human consequences of leaving these Hollywood caricatures unexamined, the film challenges viewers to recognize the urgent need for counter-narratives that do justice to the diversity and humanity of Arab people and the reality and richness of Arab history and culture.

The following is also interesting. Taken from the 2005 Sundance Film Festival, the following montage entitled ‘Planet of the Arabs’, which was inspired by Dr Shaheen’s book, collects together some of the worst spectacles of Hollywood's relentless vilification and dehumanization of Arabs and Muslims:
