Santorum: Obama a Snob: He Wants Your Kids to go to College

VoodooV jokingly says...

I think Obama shot my dog...
I think Obama got my wife pregnant...
I think Obama gave me cancer...
I think Obama was on the grassy knoll...
I think Obama actually shot Lee Harvey Oswald...
...he probably shot Lincoln too with that time machine he learned how to make...IN COLLEGE.

That fucking snob!

TYT - 22,000% rate of return on lobbying investment

Mikus_Aurelius says...

Second time I've heard about this study and it's nonsense. If I buy my grandfather an ice cream cone and he leaves me $100,000 in his will, did I just have a 10000000% gain on my ice cream cone? No because he was disposed to leave me that money anyway.

Even better? I spent $0 lobbying George Bush and he gave me a $300 tax cut. That's infinity % return!

Without a time machine, or at least a control group, there's no way to know how much of this tax break was due to lobbying, and how much was due to republican's just enjoying giving tax breaks for businesses.

Coil did it in 1998 with their album Time Machines. I'm guessing it's like those magic 3d images from the mid-90s where you had to squint at a pattern until your eyes watered and then maybe something popped out at you - it only works for some people. This never worked for me either in the sense of getting "high". Getting a headache - yes.

... the same cannot be said of time travelers. (i.e. If it was possible, we would have already met them, etc.)

Assuming our species survives long enough to develop it, which is improbable, imho. If you believe that the development of time travel is inevitable (if it is possible), then the lack of visitors from the future may simply mean we are doomed, at least in this plane of the brane.
The Fermi Paradox doesn't disprove anything, nor was it meant to.

I kind of like the sci-fi idea that we make a time machine in some distant future. The time travel event works, but also collapses to universe down to a singularity. Time time travel event works, however, and sends our time traveler back to the original singularity causing a massive disturbance, which causes the singularity to erupt. The end of time causing the start of time, to end all over again. All this completely consistent with the current understanding of general relativity.

BBC Shushes Black Writer Broadcaster About London Riots

Hmmmmm.....so liberalism in America has spawned Teabaggers and right wing republicans? 'Cause those lines would describe their profile and behavior very well.

I think the DailyMail put their arrow in the gold on this. These aren't race riots. This is merely the end result of socialism as a matter of public policy.
http://www.dailymail.co.uk/debate/article-2024284/UK-riots-2011-Liberal-dogma-spawned-generation-brutalised-youths.html
The money quote...
"So there we have it: a large, amoral, brutalised sub-culture of young British people who lack education because they have no will to learn, and skills which might make them employable. ... They have no code of values to dissuade them from behaving anti-socially or, indeed, criminally, and small chance of being punished if they do so. They have no sense of responsibility for themselves, far less towards others, and look to no future beyond the next meal, sexual encounter or TV football game.
They are an absolute deadweight upon society, because they contribute little and yet cost the taxpayer billions. Liberal opinion holds they are victims, because society has failed to provide them with opportunities to develop their potential. Most of us would say this is nonsense. Rather, they are victims of a perverted social ethos, which elevates personal freedom to an absolute, and denies the underclass the discipline which alone might enable some of its members to escape from the swamp of dependency in which they live."
Thus, the fruits of liberal left-wing ideology on society. This is socialism's end-product.: fractuous, wasted societies that drift from illusion to nothing with only fits of rage to break the monotony. HG Wells said it well in "The Time Machine". 'We are kept keen on the grindstone of pain and necessity...' Socialism's constant condemnation of the grindstones of discipline, consequence, thrift, respect, and earnestness produce nothing but cretins such as these rioting yobs. With no whetting to smooth men into tools, they remain primitive stones suitable for little but fruitlessly hurling themselves at the windows of the industrious.

Dr. Sean Carroll -- The Paradoxes of Time Travel

MichaelL says...

There is another solution that allows for time travel and does not involved paradoxes.

Simplifying it, it goes like this:

1. Nothing can go faster than the speed of light, but we can travel as close to it as possible, neglecting the technological issues.

2. You engineer a wormhole, a Time Tunnel into the past using some sort of as-yet unknown technology.

3. Entering the wormhole at one end with your space/time machine, you emerge ten years in the past (say from 2011 to 2001), TEN LIGHT YEARS AWAY from earth.

4. Immediately, you set out to return to earth at the speed of light (less an infinitesmal amount).

5. You would arrive back at earth in 2011 just seconds/minutes/hours after you entered the Time Tunnel the first time. Because you emerged so far from Earth there was/is nothing you could have done to change or affect your past. You couldn't kill your parents in the past, you couldn't have stopped yourself from entering the Time Tunnel...

I suspect that we'll find that time travel via wormholes is possible but that wormholes will only form in such a way that the two ends cannot lead to paradoxes being created.

This means that we will still never be able to travel to see dinosaurs. Travel back in time 65 million years and you will emerge 65 million light-years away. Travel back to earth and you will still only arrive just after you entered the other end of the time tunnel.

Hence we will also never see future time travelers in our time, including killer cyborgs from the future.

as Americans we have to look in the mirror FIRST.
You can't do that unless you've got a mirror handy somewhere.
If I invent a time machine, and go back and beat out Clinton for the presidency and deploy American troops into Rwanda and save 700,000 lives by slowing the genocide it looks pretty good to us. BUT if you only look at America, and ignore the crimes of the Hutu militia's in Rwanda, all you would see is American intervention precipitating another African civil war that killed 100,000 Africans.
You can't judge the interactions between two nations in a vacuum where only one nation's crimes and failures are considered, which is the unfortunate turn Chomsky has been taking for awhile now.
You can't judge America's role in Libya without equally assessing the role of Gadhafi as well. Without assessing both you are not only being dishonest with your audience, but deliberately so.
Also notice that this is 15 minutes of a much longer speech.
My point sadly applies to pretty much all of Chomsky's work for the last couple of years .

I guess you just don't get it then.
