Epic Racist Moment on Game Show

You are right Voodoo.
As soon as the genealogy of disadvantage born from forced immigration, slavery, segregation and racism are no longer evident in hindering ones prospects in society then these organisations have no legitimacy. As soon as America ditches the notion of total individual accountability that is so crucial to the "American dream" they might realise that their empire was built on the backs of an injustice that continues to this day. One either has to accept that there is something inherently inferior about being black that makes them predisposed to poverty (and by extension crime and lack of education) or accept that the social institutions that govern American life are complacent with not addressing past injustices.

beautifully put... but completely avoids addressing the issue when is there no need for affirmative action... who decides it, and is dependent on an outcome that is unattainable in the same vein you could philosophize that Utopia is unattainable?

not only that, but the whole concept of "two wrongs make a right" comes into play alot when discussing affirmative action... and the whole irony involved in disadvantaging someone based on the possible actions of an ancestor to advantage someone who's ancestor may have been the recipient of racism (and in any given situation isn't going to be a direct relationship of your ancestor did this to mine directly) and how that relates to personal responsibility

there's definitely a problem with the education system in the US, and race definitely plays it's part there... but it's not limited to race either... it's just that previously, race and economics were determining factors alot more in sync... where as today economics is ruining the education system with much broader strokes

there are plenty of examples of HAVES who waste their starting position, and plenty of examples of HAVENOTS who succeed despite their starting position... painting with broad strokes here tends to get people's back up for that very reason... and the line between HANDOUT and HANDUP is very indistinct and subjective

a question I put to you is now that we're 2-3 generations removed from the civil rights movement, do you think in our lifetime, we'll reach a point where affirmative action will no longer be needed? where actual equality will be attained and not "enforced"

my feeling is that when money is a VERY strong driving factor in that question... I don't think we will

*and to clarify that last statement... I mean BOTH sides of the for and against argument being motivated by money

@kymbos @dag I've listened to 'this American life' for the past 2 years. I'm Australian and it relates to one and all. The podcast is one of those pure gems that you find...a real incite into the human condition. I do love looking forward to it every week. It is real, true Broadcast/Investigative radio. Every episode follows a theme in various acts (different stories):

Example episode 368: Who do you think you are?

...In which talks about the oral history of the great depression, parking tickets and more. 'This American Life' can be funny at times, informative and heart breaking. I recomend you all give it a try Thier podcasts are free for streaming on the site.

Comment hidden because you are ignoring dag. (show it anyway)

Me too. Well, actually 1 of 2 podcasts.

I only really have enough time in a week for Marc Maron. Not that I've really looked around at other podcasts, to be fair, but Marc pumps out 2-3 hours of swesome comedy-junkie quality per week, and it's all I have time for.
I realised recently that I probably listen to him speaking more than almost anyone else in my life, with the possible exception of my wife. And that's only a possible exception. I don't listen to her speak uninterrupted for an hour and a half at any given time.
So what's this whole 'This American Life' thing about? Would it entertain a non-American?

Rick Perry gets basic Tea Party History Wrong

Boise_Lib says...

>> ^marinara:

what exactly did he get wrong?
tea partiers dressed as indians to disguise themselves.
I mean it wasn't a public protest, but it was a disguise

The rest of the story from Wonkette:

Matt Yglesias explains:

Contrary to Perry’s assertion, nobody was “afraid to walk around in public” in colonial Boston out of “fear that they’d be persecuted” for objecting to high taxes. What actually happened was that “disguised men and others then went on board the tea-ships moored at Griffin’s Wharf, and in the course of three hours they emptied three hundred and forty-two chests of tea into the water of the harbor.” Apparently not all the tea partiers actually did wear disguises at all, but clearly the point of wearing disguises wasn’t generalized fear of public expression of dissent but specific fear that acts of vandalism were illegal. For all that’s changed in the subsequent 230 years, this aspect of American life is basically the same. People who want to protest peacefully do so freely, people who want to destroy other people’s property are more likely to wear masks.

atheist debunks faith healing to the detriment of charlatans

This still remains the best way to attract the most non-GED people into one area. Sorry, I'm feeling a bit terse today.

/Remember: Your leaders learned and know less than you, NOW (a lot are like this, obviously some do have a lot of education AS AN EXAMPLE Barack Obama--i.e. don't link him with these people). Their knowledge at the time was less and many get degrees from bible colleges just to add the ridiculous pre-rendered difference to those with a Dr.,PhD, etc... Our kids have more knowledge as well. They learn things in junior high that would have been reserved for college a few generations earlier. This shows the HUGE gap in understanding that can be at play here. Also, perhaps why secularism is winning with modern youth.

Slightly off-topic, but it relates to charlatanism...

No, the Paul's are not charlatans. But, their "doctor" difference that is awarded makes many people that aren't keen enough to see through the masquerade to realize they use it as a pulpit and a stick to beat in their opinions with... artificial "weight". Such as their views on evolution; I'm as qualified to talk about it as they are.

The Paul's are a great example of this. Dentistry with creationism. They should know though right, THEY'RE DOCTORS! They can easily refute something they in actuality have no knowledge of. This is the same here. You have slightly smarter cunning people with basic knowledge of medical and psychological manipulation and they use it to their own ends. The people there have no chance against this as they are blissfully ignorant or just uneducated. Very sad aspect of American life , if not the worst, if you ask me.

//A bit off-topic.
