We see it all the time, he says he knows what a strawman is, what an anecdote is, yet as others have called him out on, He spouts strawmans, he spouts anecdotes, he does it consistently.

He whines about personal responsibility, but is the first one to cry foul, to claim victimhood, to pretend that he so oppressed. He's STILL whining about something I teased him about MONTHS ago. And news flash Lantern, I never did directly call you a homosexual (not the derogatory term "homo") I called you out on your strange "fantasies" (your word, not mine) that you yourself described regarding homosexuals. If you want to internalize that as an insult or an accusation, that's your problem, not mine. And besides, even if I did directly call you a homosexual and you're not, that's not an insult, it may be an incorrect statement, but it's not an insult.

Then there's the hypocrisy of claiming to care so much about manners, then saying that violence would be a good way to make someone have good manners. Do you fucking listen to yourself? The civilized world generally considers violence of ANY kind to be BAD manners...not good. Again, such a hypocrite. The fact that you seem to think differently is rather appalling.

and then his hypocrisy about name calling, just now he claimed that because someone "namecalled" him that he lost the argument, but you really don't have to look through his comment history very hard to find him being quite liberal <gasp!> with the name calling, often being the one instigating it with many ad hominem attacks. I know what you're thinking, "wah! but liberals do it too!!" Sure they do. But again, no one ever claimed that the left was perfect (that would be another strawman). we just claim that our ideas are better than yours and can usually back it up...big difference. It was a fine theory, but I don't think the reverse psychology of saying it's gay to insult gays actually works on homophobes. And teasing them about potentially being gay seems to validate their childish attitude.

As the culture moves away from homophobia being accepted, I almost think those insecure macho men will be relieved. It's got be be exhausting to be that paranoid.

One of my favorite memories is being at a potluck where I didn't know many people. There was a little girl, maybe 4 years old, running around in a big circle throughout the house, who kept running near me as I lounged on a bean bag chair. As she ran past, I would try to grab her. (I was a 30 year old woman, not a man, by the way.) She would shriek and run away from me.

Every time she came by, her shrieks got to be more and more terrified, it seemed to me. That the fun was going out of it. So I thought -- you'd better back off, this isn't fun anymore, you don't know this kid.

So she circles back again, but this time I don't go for her. She stops a few feet away from me. Her eyes are HUGE as she stares at me. I'm getting seriously worried that I have scarred this unknown kid for life. She takes a tiny step forward. I do nothing. She takes another step forward. I do nothing.

She takes one more step forward, her eyes locked on mine with complete focus. In a deep unnatural voice, thrumming with energy, drawn out in anticipation, she intones -- "Scaaaaare me."

That happened 30 years ago and it still tickles the holy heck out of me.

Oh my fucking god. Sin City is pretty much my favourite movie of all time. They have been teasing us with this for YEARS, man! So great!

I'm sadly agreed. Bullies don't categorically fall flat after highschool. This just feels more like the way we wish the world was, and not the way it really is. A certain amount of selfishness and meanness actually works to a person's benefit in many situations, doubly so if they are clever enough. Sure, some of the bullies from high school will end up as dead beat nobodies, but so will the kids bullied and teased into depression. I fear messages like this aren't about solving the problem, but about trying to cheer up the victims. I'd vote for cheering them up with the reality that they can still succeed and triumph in spite of the bullying rather than the falsehoods and wishes that any half aware high schooler is going to see through and feel no better for.

No, intelligent people don't take stupidly dangerous risks to show off. There's no equivalent payoff for the pointless risk he took in hoisting that alligator over his head, -or- in teasing a dangerous water-dwelling creature while underwater.

You can try to make up excuses for it all you like, but it was a fucking stupid stunt. And when, sooner or later, the universe collects on one of his stupid stunts, he'll be all "It's so unfair!" And -if- he survives, he doubtless be counting on the rest of us to pay his medical costs, and probably some sort of disability as well. Fuck him.
