DIY Magneto - Walking on the Ceiling

newtboy says...

The force of magnetism falls off quickly with distance. The force required to offer much pull at 6 feet (your theoretical head) would be huge at 6 inches, so tuning the 'suit' would be insanely difficult...and you would have to stay exactly the same distance from the magnetic force at all times (with all parts) or the balance would be off and you would fall up or down uncontrollably. I'm sure there are other problems, like subjecting yourself to a super powerful magnetic field for extended periods maybe?

AeroMechanical said:

Okay, I'm way out of my depth here, but might it be possible to construct a whole body outfit with a gradient of iron content from head to foot such that with a sufficiently powerful, flat magnet on the ceiling you could approximate the inverse square law of gravity across your suit so that you could walk about on it (admittedly with some discomfort) almost as though you were walking on the ground? Falling over would be unfortunate, of course, but I'm just wondering what the theoretical problems would be.

How we give out moderating powers to Sifters (Controversy Talk Post)

Huckabee is Not a Homophobe, but...

enoch says...

@BoneRemake
i am a man of faith.
do you feel as strongly about me as you do @bobknight33.
do you speak about me in the same tone?

everything i do.
everything i say.
every minute of every waking hour is based on my faith.
is born from my faith.

maybe it is because of my faith i read bobs commentary different.
when he states that human morality has moved on from biblical morality..he is correct.

and i thought it very prescient of him to recognize that fact.

in his second commentary i watched him attempt to express how the picture had become so much larger..and grander, which only served to cement his faith even stronger.he was not dismissing science,he was incorporating it into his faith.

which some here viewed as a dodge.
now maybe that is due to a pre-conceived idea of who bob actually is.
if you think bob is a fundamentalist then yes..his commentary may seem a tad...off.

but if you see bob as a man of faith, then his comment revealed a curiosity and desire to understand and an absolute awe at the way of things unfolding before us.

if we look at science as the understanding of the physical universe by way of theory, testing and repeatable applications of said testing.then science is actually the search for god/creator (from a faith viewpoint).

were you aware that 60% of surveyed scientists regarded themselves as people of *gasp* faith?

i see a lot of people making assumptions and presumptions about other sifters here on this thread.

so you need to ask yourself one question:
how did you come to your assumption in regards to anothers:motivations, intent, feelings, faith?

what tool did you use?

was it a crystal ball?
ouija board?
did you fall into a vat of nuclear waste and gain the super power of peering into another humans soul to discern their true intentions?

as humans we all assume to differing degrees, but if you are not a person of faith, then try to avoid those assumptions.

why not just ask bob?
he is usually gracious enough to interact with those he is full aware disagree with him..almost always.

ok.
enough ranting today.
you kids stay awesome,im off to get my pool ready !

Lucy TRAILER 1 (2014) - Luc Besson, Scarlett Johansson Movie

EvilDeathBee says...

Not impressed. If they have this special drug that literally turns people into a super human, why put it in some random, kidnapped person rather than someone they trust, or more likely, bought? Why put it in a container made out something with similar structural integrity to that of tissue paper, so that when she doubles over (like say to take a shit) it doesn't burst, thus creating a super human out to seek revenge? Why aren't there heaps of other super humans? It seemed like there was a LOT of this drug. Wouldn't she be encountering a lot of others with the same powers as her?

And then of course the 10% brain thing *rolls eyes strenuously*. Does anyone seriously believe this anymore? Who makes a movie around this premise in 2014?

Now those points aside, this still looks generic and dull as hell. The concept of a human rapidly evolving beyond the capabilities of the normal to super power territory is nothing new but still can be interesting and entertaining, I doubt this will be

ah thank you for your kind words my friend.
much appreciated.

many here on this site of late appear to have acquired super powers and have the ability to discern my intentions.
which to my surprise are always egotistical in nature....the mind..it baffles.

the belittling, trolling and smug arrogance grates on my nerves and is so un-necessary.
all multiple forms of bullying i detest.

little kings..
in their little fiefdoms..
demanding respect while giving none.

i would chuckle if it were not so heart breaking.

but i am duty bound to stand up and point to the rot and the decay.
few ears listen and even rarer for a heart to be touched.

and even when i do that my words are ridiculed and dismissed.
corruption seeks to blind the seeker and deafen one who would listen.whispering always to the most intimate and despicable of our natures.
selfishness knows no bounds...it just wants more.

i am losing this battle.
my integrity..questioned.
my motivations...projected by those with lesser constitutions.
sacrifices ..all in vain, for naught but a harsh word and a suspicious glare.

as if i were the enemy.

where is the love?
the joy of creation and just being?
of connecting with another and rejoicing in that small moment of realization?

ah my friend,i struggle with those who choose pettiness over substance and to the absolute deafening roar of silence.the pervasive shadow of fear has infected and conquered more territory over the past year, seeping like a stain.

and the oblivious rejoice in their own ignorance.
thinking themselves clever.
doom has never before held such a beautiful and entrancing countenance.
we revel in our own stink and call it lovely.
dancing like macabre ghosts on a sterile landscape...
love and joy left long ago...
and we clap like monkeys and gleefully chatter as the noose is drawn tighter.
and the smell of death and fear grow stronger, but the allure of violence distracts us from our own emptiness.

what is it worth if there is no love?

ah..but this is why yours was/is so precious.
thank you my friend.

there is love,
and with that...
there is hope.

because i love you.

Bill Nye the Science Guy Dispels Poverty Myths

poolcleaner says...

I think these so-called unstoppable warlords that siphon off our aid is an even bigger myth. The United States of America defeated the British Empire, invaded Nazi Europe, dropped a nuclear fucking bomb on Axis Japan, sacrificed thousands of lives in Vietnam, stood head to head against the USSR during the Cuban Missile Crisis, landed on the moon, funded Nicaraguan revolutionaries using money from arms sales to Iran, assassinated Osama bin Laden and Saddam Hussein, lied about weapons of mass destruction and invaded Iraq, fight the Taliban in Afghanistan, and yet we can't deal with warlords and civil wars in Africa where (at least with Rwandan civil war) weaponry is in the form of crate after crate of machetes made in China?

If all of those things are possible for the biggest super power in the world, how is it not possible to stop these warlords from siphoning our aid?

Lies.

We don't care so nothing of real consequence happens. All of those above events have one thing in common: our own goddamn self interest.

Everything sucks. May god have mercy on everyone's soul.

bcglorf said:

I hate to get on Bill Nye, and I agree with the need for more foreign aid even. I must protest non the less about war being a minor factor in poverty and related deaths. Blaming the millions that die of starvation and malnutrition in Africa on that alone is little different than saying that the millions who starved under Stalin and Mao could have been saved by foreign aid.

Even when there isn't active warfare in the most poverty ridden places of the world, there are warlords and criminals ruling the region through starvation and actively redirecting what little foreign aid there is to themselves and away from those that do not support them. Simply sending more food and money to places like Somalia or North Korea does nothing to help the people there, and if the aid is naively sent blind to whomever holds power it actually makes things WORSE by strengthening the very monsters responsible for the suffering. I'd like to believe our apathy here is the biggest problem as much as the next guy, but the reality is that there are also people local to the problem involved first hand in perpetuating and profiting from human suffering. If we refuse to admit that there are instances were 'aid' necessarily takes the form of shooting the bad guys then we are doomed to watching as the next genocide plays out, as we did for the Rwandan Tutsis, Iraqi Kurds and Shias and countless others.

Double Caste South African Comedian talks Apartheid

Ahh, to be either free or above the limitations of our skin color. I am neither and so I envy that. This man opens his mouth and your opinions are instantly put on hold.

That's a super power.

My wife has that super power and it's amazing to see the flicker in people's eyes when they hear her talk. And then the multitude of international experiences that flood forth. Instant audience engagement.

Racial boundaries. How silly. And funny.

The Way Games Work: NES Zapper

oohlalasassoon says...

Semi off-topic but the title "NES Zapper" reminds me of the NES Advantage my little brother had. For those that don't know, it was this controller that was meant to be like a real arcade-style controller with enlarged buttons & a true post and knob joystick. It had a big base that you could set down on a coffee table or in your lap. Here's what they look like.

My brother had it in his lap, probably playing Metroid or something, and being that it was wintertime, and prime scuff-your-socks-on-the-carpet-and-static-shock-your-little-brother-season, I scuffed my socks on the carpet and touched his hand as he played. What instantly followed was like a super-powered shock that I felt as much as he did (well, not quite as much...) It turns out that the NES Advantage had a metal base, and when I shocked his hand, it fried the controller(on his lap) and it basically electrocuted his wang. He screamed like a a little girl so I was, as you can imagine, completely thrilled with the results. Unfortunately my parents didn't see things my way and they made me buy another controller. It was so worth it though.

'The Flying Man': Darkly Original Short Film

VoodooV says...

I think maybe, much more simply. It might just be commentary on what would *really* happen if someone was given super powers.

Even the most fair and ethical person in the world would have a REALLY HARD time not using powers for personal gain or petty satisfaction. That's assuming you didn't just flat out commit blatant crimes such as this flying man.

Even if you chose to "do good" with your powers, when you no longer have the traditional limitations us normal mortals have, the temptation to do petty shit, even just harmless pranks with your powers would be insanely tough.

@coolhund brings up an excellent point. blue-collar crime, in the grand scheme of things, really isn't a huge problem anymore. white collar crime, however, is a larger concern for most people these days. Little bit harder to swoop in and save the day in that sort of situation. Not very exciting either.

And when it comes right down to it, crime fighting really isn't all that fun or easy.

'The Flying Man': Darkly Original Short Film

xxovercastxx says...

What makes this noteworthy isn't that he's "a terrorist"; he's no more a terrorist and no less an antihero than The Punisher or early Batman (who was fond of shooting people or dropping them to their deaths); it's that he's portrayed as the monster in the dark.

We know (modern) Batman's background and his motivations and we know that, even though he portrays himself as a monster, he's a virtuous person who is just using fear as a weapon for justice.

The flying man is a featureless, super-powered humanoid who appears out of the shadows and kills people. He terrifies us as much as he terrifies the criminals he hunts because we know exactly as much about him as they do. He's a monster to all of us, at least right up until the end when we see him spare the life of a criminal who is also the father of a young boy. That's the seed of doubt being planted.

Riddick - Trailer

00Scud00 says...

So they're just dumping the whole Chronicles storyline then? A little disappointing if so, I was really curious to see what he'd do next.
That said, this movie still looks like it could be good, although I think it's a little weird that they make seeing in the dark sound like it's some kind of super power.

Joss Whedon's "Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D." New TV Series on ABC

TheFreak says...

Agent Coulson is a super hero.
He's the first hero whose super power is "No Fucks Given".

Anyone could defend humanity with super strength, invulnerability, unstoppable force...Coulson doesn't have these powers though. He walks into the fight armed with nothing less than his steel clad will and a pair of balls that must be hauled around in a semi-trailer.

Who's the real hero, Captain America?
