When I think of Oliva Newton-John, i think of...

newtboy says...

I was 8 for Grease. I only saw it because I went to the movies with a neighbor (and her kids) and she decided we would sneak into grease after and watch it for free. I got in trouble (as if I had a choice).

By then I listened to (what at the time was considered) hard rock…KISS, AC/DC, DIO, Sabbath, Judas Priest, etc. my family liked Barry Manilow, John Denver, and Neil Diamond. The music wasn’t for me.

Greaser/bobbysoxer stuff never excited me either, I wouldn’t have seen it by choice.

Disco…I still like. I don’t care that it’s not popular, in fact that helps. Xanadu came out when I was 10….it also wasn’t my choice of movie, and probably wasn’t as good a movie overall I don’t remember, but I liked it better at 10.

How old were you? I was thirteen and the idea of "mainstream" i'm sure, was nowhere near my wheelhouse of thinking.

My memories of her are exclusively from Grease which i really enjoyed. I do know her her hits, but her music and pop in general never interested me. I had been indoctrinated in progressive rock by the older neighborhood kids by this time. It was always the movie for me, not at all her music.

Thoughts and Prayers - A Randy Rainbow Song Parody

cloudballoon says...

I'm no different from everyone on earth. If I'm a Creator, then everyone has the same right to be a Creator.

See, although I'm a Christian - which I define as agreeing and following Jesus' vision and work. All those non-scientific Old Testament, New Testament resurrection, Heaven & Hell, post-death promises stuff I leave it as Faith. I don't classify a baptised church-goer as Christian.... CIt's stupid taking in the Bible in strict literal sense. So many contradictions, the truth is the Bible was oral history passed down to generations of ancient writers, made inconsistent by translations and interpretations and other cultural & historical factors. A sensible person that can think criticially need to understand the backgrounds and intent. Don't be lazy and don't buy wholly into words coming out of pastors' mouths. You have people with lots of personal, ulterior motives to call themselves Christians. I don't buy any of those crap... nor care for any association with those people. Again, gotta pass the smell test.

parallel universe stuff there.

low hanging fruit.

also points out how often the Right uses the "naw - uh - uh - you are" defense. the Democrats need to start trademarking phrases. "The Big Lie" would have made them millions.

Why GM Says Its Ultium Batteries Will Lead To EV Dominance

spawnflagger says...

I think Tesla does some innovative stuff - like using the worlds largest metallic moulds (built by some Italian company if I recall, which make those exclusively for Tesla). But ultimately Elon is a "hype man", and most of his promises have fallen flat (check out Thunderf00t's youtube channel - he debunks many scammy startups as well as Elon's claims, using high school chemistry and physics).

I do applaud Tesla for opening additional factories in Germany and China so quickly, but exponential growth (for any EV maker) is impossible - there's simply not enough easy-to-mine lithium in the world. (Maybe Elon is planning to mine some asteroids instead of going to Mars? who knows)

The GM battery tech isn't exciting or sexy, but it is a means to building a more affordable EV. Ford is already shipping F-150 Lightning (assuming its not affected by the same contactor recall as the Mach-E). Rivian has been (slowly) shipping trucks.
Where's the CyberTruck? I bet even the electric Silverado will start shipping before the CyberTruck.

New York Nuclear PSA what to do in case of an attack

luxintenebris jokingly says...

yup. EMP would make tuning in the radio or starting an auto tough. likely take down the xbox too.

did the article say anything about strontium? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Strontium-90

or the Baby Toot Survey
http://beckerexhibits.wustl.edu/dental/articles/babytooth.html

stuff is hard to outrun or hide away from.
(anti-maskers won't have to protest. it won't matter.)

The best 'what to do' is do NOT use nuclear weapons.

anyway

Happy Tsutomu Yamaguchi all!

Sad that the article and @StukaFox both forgot the emp, that kills all electronics, making your car your tomb if it was made after 1980.
A car is only a decent shelter if it’s at the bottom of an underground parking structure that doesn’t collapse in the blast.
Cars are not escape vehicles in this scenario. There won’t be many erratic drivers, like the article claimed, because any car with a computer chip will be dead.

Yeah, @bobknight33. Not surprised you post this. I went to the YT page and read the comments from your “alpha news” cohorts….pretty ugly blatantly racist stuff, buddy. Bad enough I’m shocked YT hasn’t suspended the channel.
I can only guess what you were searching for when you found this.

Your people, saying we are a different species…calling people “human” in quotation marks and laughing.
You are a real, racist piece of work, pal. You are so racist, you don’t think calling people subhuman, non human, or saying directly “there’s an N problem” is noticeable or remarkable, that’s everyday normal conversation to you.

I’m 99.96% certain this is how you wish your children reacted to liberals.

Jesus fuck….you really love to make yourself despicable, don’t you.

Calling all sifters to downvote this racist post into oblivion ASAP.

IMO these videos are basically WOW ads for a super niche item, that may not actually have a real world use outside of recreation. The paramedic response stuff seems pretty ridiculous considering the immense limitations they have. It does look cool though.

Wikipedia's Bias

newtboy says...

Poor bob. A wonderful libertarian information clearinghouse hasn’t become a home for right wing nonsense, lies, and propaganda. Tragic!

Still talking about Hunter Biden, eh? You still have nothing better? Another Benghazi nothing burger with fries….something fake to keep you mad at the right person. There’s zero credible evidence on that laptop, no evidence it ever belonged to Hunter, at best there’s evidence someone who hacked his email account at the same time the Russians hacked Clinton and the DNC created it, adding tons of fake information, photoshopped photos, fake and doctored emails, etc. Because the right had possession of it, and tampered with the contents for 9 months before “turning it over” (to Giuliani?), it’s nothing. Like a piece of evidence allegedly taken from a crime scene, washed, dipped in blood, exposed to close range gun fire, wiped with dna, tested at a filthy unaccredited lab with zero anti-cross contamination protocols, then handed to police and expecting a conviction. Just so stupid.

They don’t “vouch” for the emails….they say there are indications some of them are real….not all. Liars.

So family is fair game….now….but not Trump’s criminal family that undeniably took BILLIONS in bribes from horrific murderous dictators and Trump covered for them, directed his DOJ to not investigate or to just exonerate people like Mohammed bin Salman, even bragging he saved Mohammed’s ass from consequences for the live dismemberment of an American. Far from the only KNOWN bribe, Melania…..Don Jr, Eric, Jared, likely Barron too. Better investigate since this kind of stuff outrages you….but it doesn’t really, now does it? It’s just a crutch you cling to like an emotional support blanket, propaganda.

Oh wow! Right wing media isn’t reliable!? Who knew!? (EVERYBODY KNEW, YOU DUMB SHIT…for decades)

Whine some more, snowflakes. Why not create your own? (Because it would be chock full of insanity from day one, with zero real information or usefulness and you know it).

An apple painted with the blackest paint

spawnflagger says...

false advertisement - Vanta Black is blacker, at 99.8% (in spray-on form). It's immeasurably black in raw form (> 99.96% - no spectrometer in the world was powerful enough to measure how much light it absorbs)

probably this mousou stuff is slightly less expensive (ridiculously vs ludicrously?)

Teachers Sabotage Don’t Say Gay Law By Following It

JiggaJonson says...

Teacher here. It's made-up-nonsense. I don't give a shit what gender or sexual orientation a kid is and im CERTAINLY not going to try to convince anyone to change anything about themselves.

That said, I'm going to acknowledge that gay/trans people exist in authorship and literature as it arises. You can't read someone like Whitman (Leaves of Grass, arguably America's greatest poet) and not come across references to sexuality either implicit or explicit. https://www.poetryfoundation.org/poems/45472/i-sing-the-body-electric

It becomes relevant in passages like this:

5
This is the female form,
A divine nimbus exhales from it from head to foot,
It attracts with fierce undeniable attraction,
I am drawn by its breath as if I were no more than a helpless vapor, all falls aside but myself and it,
Books, art, religion, time, the visible and solid earth, and what was expected of heaven or fear’d of hell, are now consumed,
Mad filaments, ungovernable shoots play out of it, the response likewise ungovernable,
Hair, bosom, hips, bend of legs, negligent falling hands all diffused, mine too diffused,
Ebb stung by the flow and flow stung by the ebb, love-flesh swelling and deliciously aching,
Limitless limpid jets of love hot and enormous, quivering jelly of love, white-blow and delirious juice,
Bridegroom night of love working surely and softly into the prostrate dawn,
Undulating into the willing and yielding day,
Lost in the cleave of the clasping and sweet-flesh’d day.

----------------------------------
Maybe a conversation like:

"'Love flesh swelling' like he's in love with some woman and they...he...?"

"Probably not, he didn't have any serious female relationships as far as I am aware."

"But the title is 'The female form'"

"Well, it's possible, but it's not likely the case that he was talking about himself being in love with a woman. This poem is in the text but he wrote many other pieces about he-himself falling into and out of love with various men and we have letters documenting those relationships with his male significant others. Although, I'm not sure what to call them because gay marriage would have been illegal at the time. He's likely writing the poem in a way where he appreciates the female form and sees men who are drawn to it like the way I appreciate watching bees act obsessively driven to the middle of flowers. I like watching Bees in action, but that doesn't mean I'm going all pollen crazy, still I appreciate it for what it is."
-------------------

This is an example of how discussion of sexuality would come up in my classroom as I imagine it. Note how I'm not trying to convince the kid I'm talking to to turn gay like it's a big game of rainbow-red-rover or something. Nevertheless, knowing the author's sexual preference in this instance informs our understanding of the piece.

My own personal theory?
The people railing against things like this are the same shitheads that can't be bothered to read ANYTHING and instead giggle and guffaw at "hurhurhurhur he hadd'a boner" where I get to live an early stage of Idocracy.

Also, I agree that the "funky stuff" shouldn't be just avoided altogether. For goodness sake, just let teachers have the difficult conversation that everyone is avoiding. Reminds me of when Peggy Hill was struggling to say "Penis" when she was assigned sex ed.

first, how prevalent are these gay symposiums?

been through several flights of kids and yet to hear of one elementary teacher leading a colloquy on homosexuality. very unlikely it's ever been a thing or was so mild or explained deftly it never became a thing.

and no doubt if there was, would have heard about it. case in point:

was asked, "what does 'funky stuff' in the song mean?"

"don't know sweetie. probably slang for 'love'. I'll look it up on the internet."

they listen and ask about EVERYTHING! no more Rick James on the ride home.

Ok, I’ve proven with video that the commie/Russian flags were repeatedly flown at RNC and Trump rallies…which shut you up about that...now let’s take on the “energy independence “ lie.

2017 we imported about 10150 million barrels of oil per day.
2018 around 9950 million barrels per day
2019 around 9150 million barrels per day
2020 (pandemic shutdown all travel and most business) we still imported just over million 7850 barrels per day….and let’s not forget he intentionally nearly doubled how much we bought from Russia in his tenure up to the highest levels ever in 2020.
Our dependence shrank slightly under Trump, and that’s good, but never were we independent, that’s a bold faced lie.

2021 with the economy in excellent shape and growing at least 3 times faster than ever under Trump we are back to just UNDER 8500 million per day….better than any non pandemic Trump year.

So…when exactly do you think we were energy/oil independent under Trump? Because it never happened, he just said it….he says a lot of stuff, most is utter bullshit.

I’ll give you a while to let that sink in. I won’t confuse you by debunking more than one lie at a time. Deal?

P.S. let me throw you a bone and remind you that the Keystone pipeline wouldn’t be finished today even if there had been no cancelation…..and that oil was destined for overseas markets in the first place unless the oil industry was nationalized.
