Farm of the Future Uses No Soil and 95% Less Water

Chairman_woo says...

Think about it this way. Stack the corn trays just once and you just doubled your output for a given area.

You're right about getting less mileage from taller crops. But every vertical layer would in theory still double the area you have to work with each time you added one.

Scale this up to a skyscraper sized building and you could supply any city with all the food it could need locally.

It probably could start to skew the market towards squatter plants as you say, but I can't see why most if not all of the things we grow now couldn't be viable. (doubly so if they ever nail the process of growing meat)

Samantha Bee on Orlando - Again? Again.

You do realize, don't you, that most modern western nations do not even come close to banning firearms altogether and still they don't come close to the US history of gun violence and mass shootings. I'm sure part of it is just cultural but mostly it's just due to a collection of rules and regulations that restrict what kind of weapons can be owned, how they can be used, and stringent checks on the people who want to acquire them. Check out this article for some info about gun ownership in Canada.

Sorry, but I am still against banning people from owning weapons based on browser history. Our government has a very nebulous definition of what it takes to be considered a terrorist.

Look at the individual in this shooting, the FBI suspected him, he underwent three FBI interviews and an undercover probe where he admitted to having terrorist ties. The FBI removed him from the terrorist watch list after all of that. Yet you can get added to the watchlist by looking at ISIS affiliated websites.

So, if we did follow the recommendations of the President, the terrorist would still have been OFF the watch list and able to buy guns, while the person who went to an ISIS site might be unable to.

The point is that no specific regulation is going to stop these shootings, other than to ban firearms altogether. I'm not willing to sacrifice that right.

Bill Nye Bets Climate Denying Meteorologist $20k

I love this. Not only is it a fantastic debunk of some shoddy science - in a scientific manner no less! And it's also really good betting; just play the odds. They're stacked in his favour, win or lose he put his money in a profitable position.

Burger King Employee Pranked To Break Windows

bobknight33 says...

overworked into a stupor Where was this in the story?

I'm not here to bitch at you I just don't get the argument you make.

You then implied that these workers have to work 2 to 3 jobs ( hence stupor) just to make ends meet because those at the top are making too much.

What about the guy ( gal) at the top making fat stacks. I agree it does rub me wrong but still how does it directly hurt the minimum wage employee?

If the employee has has / develops skills he makes more. According to you logic this would be like robbing his fellow workmates, stealing money that can go towards them.

If you started you own company struggled to make ends meet and slowly built up a company should you not receive the fruits of you labor?

When you have an entry position what should you pay? Dishwasher should not be making 30K /yr ( 15$/hr). This is what you are generally saying.

My Boss had a 5 Million bonus and salary hike to near 4 million. Yes this pisses me off but it does not correlate to what I make.
Even if you took that and spread it across all employees ( 300k) it would only be about 30 bucks each.

Would you rather just see a cap of salaries to 1 Million?

They what if you suddenly became the next Gates or Jobs would you want to be paid what you are worth?

If you are going to go to 15$/hr why not more? Some could argue that this is too low? What about the company that made all salaries 70K the other year? 15$/hr seems pretty stingy.

Um....most likely the manager took the call, and directed the employees to smash the windows...and most managers already make over $15 an hour. Perhaps if they paid $15 an hour to everyone, they could hire someone who's not overworked into a stupor or with common sense enough to stop the other idiots from following anonymous, phoned in directions without question.

How Hillary And The DNC Colluded To Steal The Election

Mordhaus says...

I guess Hils is a proponent of the "if you ain't cheating, you ain't trying" school. The ridiculous amount of effort to make Sanders disappear has been shocking, hardly any airtime, primary rigging attempts, and super delegates that are probably counting stacks of cash if they vote for Clinton.

I suspect we are going to end up in another situation where the candidate that wins didn't actually win the popular vote.

The Death Of National Geographic

TheFreak says...

Well, the upside being...National Geographic was such an excellent magazine that you really couldn't throw an issue away. You stuck it away in your ever growing library of National Geographic magazines. Then years later you have stacks and stacks of the magazine that you can't get rid of.

Now that problem is fixed.

The Death Of National Geographic

MilkmanDan says...

Holy crap. This reaction to *one* article could potentially be hyperbole.

But when that is the entire contents of an essentially random issue after the changeover... Yikes.

But most of all, this is just sad... My parents and grandparents both had Nat Geos dating back a LONG time when I was growing up, and I could pick random ones out of the stacks and read for hours. Incredible photos, and great articles on science, nature, sociology, etc. Essentially criminal to shit all over that tradition like this.

Well... honestly, Canadian Languages was an elective in University, I was majoring in Z-Stacking (pronounced zed-stackn). Z-Stacking is not unlike rock cairn balancing, only you use cinder blocks and a '87 Camaro Z28 with no wheels.

Hop out to the Wet Coast, we'll go fer a rip, and grab a 2-4 of Lucky Kings.

How're ya now? That's pretty close, and a common error in dialect assignment, as the Classic Received Cape Breton is often confused with the Middle South Ontario (the St. Mary's / Listowel /Wingham Triangle Region to be precise) from which this originates. The telltale difference is the use of "Give 'er", uncommon in the MSO, popular in the CRCB.

(and yes, we do speak like this)

Insane Driver Can't Pass Bicycles And Goes Mental

robbersdog49 says...

"Do you even human?"

Lost it right there!

However, the cyclists are riding quite separated which makes it much harder to pass them safely. They should be riding stacked in twos and closer, then they aren't holding traffic up as much. I completely understand that they have every right to do what they're doing, and there's no laws saying they need to make life easy for anyone. I'm just saying there are things they could perhaps do better if they don't want to upset other road users.

There's hopefully something else going on in her world to make her angry like that (I'm feeling charitable tonight).

Last Week Tonight with John Oliver: Abortion Laws

@dag @newtboy @VoodooV

I do enjoy this site. I enjoy the posts and videos. I agree with some and disagree with others.

I don't complain to Dag when ever I am treated unfairly or a bad post is slandered against me. Even when I post video that clearly is to the disliking of most of this site and it gets yanked for having 3 down votes. I may think that is not fair but that's the rules, so be it.

As the minority on this site I could ask Dag to solicited more conservative viewpoints to this site but that would not be fair to ask him to help "stack the deck" for poor little ol me.

Liberals do not hold the majority view in America. Not by a long shot.
As of 2014
Conservatives 37%
Moderates 35%
Liberals 27%

So don't feel that you hold the majority opinion when you clearly don't.

Sifters may hold majority it here on the sift but in the real world Liberal ideas are a rightfully discarded ideas of crazy people.

Atlas, The New Generation

skinnydaddy1 jokingly says...

A Boston Dynamics engineer was found today, neatly stacked on a shelf in a box along with what authorities are saying could be bits of a hockey stick. The only witness, a 2nd Gen, Atlas robot. is not talking.
