So, not hedges blocking view on sides, but fences and building facades. Small trees to some degree blocking view. Generally and unlit walkway/footpath/alley overall.

As for definition of Alley: An alley or alleyway is a narrow lane found in urban areas, often for pedestrians only, which usually runs between or behind buildings

So I guess you can argue how narrow it has to be to be "narrow" and how "urban" this area is. The buildings aren't sky scrapers, but they rival the height of some of the buildings in the wiki pictures.

I'll take a few extra cookies for doing the looking up you could have done.

You vs Myself and Wikipedia ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alley )clearly have different definitions of what an "Alley" is. If you need help understanding look at the photos!

You're making it sound to be a dark nightmarish where terrible things await when in reality it is a gated community!

Also Please note I'm not trying to be a dick, but as this story gets older people keep adding hyperbole and it really needs to be dialed back.

Here's some images of this place.

Also, vote for politicians who don't desire to keep a squalid ghetto in the center of the city.

If China can build a sky-scraper in 15 days, San Francisco should be able to figure out how to clean up a ghetto in less than 30 years, right?

@ChaosEngine Corporations are a creation of governments, not people or free marketers. If we want to do away with legal protections for corporate entities, fine by me, I have been calling for it for quite some time. Then again, that means you will most likely have to work for yourself in the future, which is a less lazy way to live.

The problem is not companies/corporations per se, but the idea that the market determines the "winner". A market is in essence a natural selection mechanic. It doesn't reward the best or the brightest, simply the most efficient/ruthless. And that's fine if that's how you want to run your society, but most people don't.
>> ^GeeSussFreeK:

And saying you can't apply the idea of individual rights to influence all following decisions is to disallow any conversation beyond the surface of any subject. You can't talk about calculus unless you already have a working foundation of simple algebra, everything has a foundation from which is erects more complexity. To build any functional, rational structure, it has to be continually built on one foundation or it will be inconsistent, IE trying to apply the rule of math to the rule of friendships or something. Are you making this an appeal to be inconsistent, or an appeal to a different base of measure? If you wish a different base of measure, then purpose one, but I refuse to make believe that an inconsistent building is a better one to make, that can be steered to very evil ends, as many large corporate bodies have had. But even private people have done so too, look at prohibition of alcohol. People can be just as evil as corporate bodies.

In math, all rules are absolute and all theories scale infinitely. That is not the case in the real world. You cannot apply Newtonian physics to quantum theory and you don't build a sky scraper using the same construction techniques as a log cabin.

"Think" is not a four letter word. You cannot simply apply one rule to every situation. You must measure, analyse, judge.

The idea of individual rights is a hugely important one. It should always figure prominently in the discussion of any idea. But it is not the only measure of fitness.

New Libertarian Country. Wanna go? Discuss.... (Politics Talk Post)

bamdrew says...

Depending on where you end up you're talking anarchy island (Somalia), communism island (Cuba), or a hybrid place not unlike the USofA.

There are left and right libertarian doctrines... If you're talking about the right, with private ownership of land, money exchanged for goods, etc., ... all that noise is just (A) people who are easily convinced that they are not to blame for their problems, and (B) hypocrites who don't recognize the hundreds of times that they daily benefit from publicly funding resources.

Don't like the EPA? Visit China... a sunny day and you can't see sky scrapers a mile away through the pollution.

Don't like high taxes? Visit countries with low taxes... good luck not getting robbed, because they fucking suck. Its not fucking rocket science to see why...

What many libertarian really MEAN to complain about is that they don't like spending they see as wasteful. Get in line.

9/11 Rare view of the south tower hit.

charliem says...

You want to know what gives.....about a plane crashing into the side of a building, causing its eventual catastrophic failure, ending in the deaths of thousands of human lives ?

Have you been living in a cave ?

This was the work of a few seriously pissed off, well funded Saudis, with a strong belief in the afterlife classically foretold in the Koran.

They flew two 767 airlines into each tower, setting both on fire, and destroying key structural support elements within the towers core.

The design of the tower followed that any catastrophic failure of any section of the tower which would otherwise cause a topple, would in fact cause the tower to fall in its footprint to prevent an even larger catastrophe of 2, 110 floor sky-scrapers falling over sideways in the middle of downtown Manhattan.

There's nothing odd about it...theres plenty more footage online....

Container Ship Actually Bending In Heavy Seas

9364 says...

I'm sure it bends like that on design, like sky scrapers in a strong wind. But quite amazing to see in action. The last bit where the ship went up onto the wake and then crashed down and the water nearly rose as high as the deck, amazing.

Yeah, cause everyone knows that every single building is designed in exactly the same way....
Exactly! Buildings are designed to fall straight down in a pile of dust, if they're designed correctly. The one above was designed to fall over sideways.
Are you kidding ?
Sound structural engineering takes into account worst-case scenarios.
You don't want a fucking sky-scraper coming down sideways in the middle of dense down-town Manhattan.
Its public domain, go look for yourself, the WTC complex was designed to fall in on itself in the event of a catastrophic failure, to prevent what happened in this video from occurring on a MUCH LARGER SCALE.

I was going to reply much in the same way, only by saying that I thought it was in fact a stroke of genius engineering that the WTC towers fell in place instead of coming down domino style all over downtown Manhattan. In fact, I think Al-Qaeda thought for sure that the towers would topple over easily if smashed on one of their sides with enough force. But of course you don't build a couple of 400+ meters high towers out of popsicle sticks. If they knew the towers would tend to fall in on themselves, they would have tried to crash the planes on the lower levels - the way you fell a tree - to at the very least prevent the largest number of persons from evacuating (better yet: one plane on the lower levels, then some time later one on the upper levels to give it a push over). Guess they should have hired structural engineers instead of airliner pilots!

Like WTC 1, WTC 2, and WTC 7 - coincidentally enough the only three concrete and steel structures to ever have collapsed like that.
And all on the same day!
Made in America, baby!

Photo-Realistic Virtual World Rendered LIVE server-side

jmd says...

Meh, I had an explanation of everything but it was way to long. In short, this isn't fake, but it IS most likely a demo produced with the intent of selling his idea to a bigger company.

Aside from the massive amounts of memory needed to keep most of the world "on demand" for thousands of users, rendering 320x240 windows (think youtube people. Before youtube, people thought free movie streaming sites people could upload movies to would be impossible to support. It is, you just gotta customize your method of streaming to suit low bitrates) isn't to hard. I mean take a look at your video card, the only reason we want monster cards is for higher resolutions, higher AA (Which is achieved by rendering at larger resolutions then what your monitor displays), and more memory for the textures. You reduce your window to 320x240 and your only issue left is memory.

The camera's movements are exatly that of a mouse, flying through a virtual world, and the world produced many of the common flaws of LOD rendering that we encounter today in virtual worlds,

a) when zooming in on sky scrapers quickly, you can see a reflection texture that isn't rendered at a distance gets applied, this shouldn't happen in pre-renders were LOD is not applied nor needed,

b) many out door scenes get caught with low resolution shadow maps, especially the mall floor. This is an optimization for real time rendering and would not show up in pre rendering.

c) When high up in the air looking down, roadways appear sparse and buildings featureless, much like that of GTA4 when you do the same. Realtime LOD rendering removes alot of it to keep frame rates sane, pre-rendering would not need this.

I wonder how are they dropping from sky scrapers in cars/bikes? Cheats or bugs or?

I'm guessing they used the cheat codes that can be entered into the in-game mobile phone to spawn vehicles/weapons, for the ones that can't be reached by ramps.
