What a wonderful diatribe. But, could anyone please tell me actually how he defines these self-evident categories that he sets up? How does he understand "public religion?" And why is it juxtaposed with "personal faith?" What in the world would religion be if it was not public? Religion is social and it has found its inherent expression throughout histories and cultures precisely in public practices. It is, by its very nature, public.

The difficulty with his positions in this video is that he is blind to the limitations of his understanding of religion...probably b/c of his thoroughly modern mindset. Modernism and the rise of the individual has told us that beliefs are the core of religion and, therefore, are best seen as private or personal. And then, of course, any foray of religion into the public arena (however he would define it) is seen as overstepping its righful bounds and encroaching on others.

Both pre and post-modern understandings show us how limited this view is, and he would do well to do some more readings from centuries other than the 1900's. Religion and faith are best understood as rooted in practices and practices are always public. The real truth here is he has his own religion...and it is classic liberalism and it's patron saint...the Cartesian I.

That's not a logical arguement either, I'm afraid. Stealing because you can't afford something isn't right, but sometimes needed. Millions in food, water and medicine are stolen from their righful owners all the time. Medical companies fight generic pharmas to keep them from distributing needed medicins so brand name pharmas can make higher profit margins.

But let's get to the more reasonable arguement of protecting property. Theft and alternate means of less than legal distribution are always important parts of society. It prevents large scale companies from being able to say "we have it and you can only get it here, and there's nothing you can do about it." Civil disobedience isn't how the US gained independence from oppressive land barons and parliament. Facilitating civil disobedience isn't how most of our early presidents gained enough fame to make it into office, right?

I'm sorry you had something stolen from you that could have made you more money. But now you make iphone games, which actually benefits me and a lot of my friends that don't steal applications or media(all my music is vinyl, thank you). Wait, that's not true. I "stole" an animation program I needed to pass several of my college courses. But there's never any excuse to steal something, or to show someone else that lateral thinking isn't the only answer.

I originally thought the Republicans knew they were going to lose this one, and put McCain forward because they couldn't have Romney, Thompson, or Giuliani losing *GASP* to a black man. It would have too much impact on "teh base" if that were to happen, so the hard-core righ-wingnutters put forth McCain as the sacrificial lamb.

However, I don't think your suspicions could translate into a real "plan". The spectre of Bush will haunt us forever - and rest assured that in 2012 there will be many, many Democratic Ads out featuring Bush, Cheney, Palin, Bolton, Rumsfeld, and Gonzalez.
