Donald Trump Entrance at GOP Convention (C-SPAN)

Payback says...

Wikipedia:
"In July 2016 the song was used to introduce Donald Trump to the first session of the Republican National Convention in Cleveland. The irony of introducing an American political candidate with English-authored music was apparently overlooked by the event's organizers. Queen immediately issued a statement denouncing Trump's use of the song as not authorized by the band. (Licensing for public performance of the song is administered by the performing rights organization Broadcast Music, Inc. (BMI).)"

Buh bye Sarah Palin!

Dan Savage posted this vid with this commentary:

I was at the 2008 Republican National Convention and on the convention floor when Sarah Palin give her GOP-VP-nomination-acceptance speech. It was kinda scary. So this video is pretty satisfying.

My favorite moment at the 2008 convention: asking the GOP's youngest delegate, who was thrust before me and the "Real Time" camera crew by her media rep, if she was a virgin. When she refused to answer the question I said, "We'll have to take that as a 'no,'" and she got upset. Then I explained to her that the GOP backs abstinence-only for kids her age and so the question was legit. She conceded the point and gave me a hug.

I was, she said, the first gay man she had ever touched. She was, I told her, the first straight teenage Republican whose boobs had ever been pressed against mine. In Minneapolis.

Memories!

Can I bring in a grenade in my hand to the Republican National Convention, just to show my position on the matter? I won't use it, I promise. And you know I'm telling the truth, because I'm a grenade owner which makes me law abiding.

Lieberman Must Go Once and for All

NetRunner says...

From YT: http://liebermanmustgo.com

Joe Lieberman has launched consistent, deeply partisan attacks on President-elect Barack Obama, questioning his patriotism and fitness to lead. While Lieberman campaigned for John McCain and spoke on his behalf at the Republican National Convention, he spread some of the GOP's nastiest smears. Think Progress has provided thorough evidence of Lieberman's partisan politics. Lieberman should not be allowed to have subpoena power to investigate the Obama administration as chairman of the Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee. In fact, he should not be allowed to remain chairman of this or any other committee.

Lieberman has proven he cannot be trusted to hold a high rank within the Democratic caucus. That is why we launched Lieberman Must Go last summer, a campaign that caught Congress' attention when we delivered a petition with over 43,000 signatures. Now, we ask you to help us escalate the pressure by contacting members of the Senate Democratic Steering Committee. Tell them to strip Lieberman of his chairmanship in the Democratic caucus.

We have included a sample script and phone numbers below for you to use, and we ask that you be polite when you explain why Lieberman Must Go.

Rachel Maddow - RNC Spends $150,000+ on Palin's Clothes

burdturgler says...

This is just what's been disclosed since September.
Politico:
"A review of similar records for the campaign of Democrat Barack Obama and the Democratic National Committee turned up no similar spending.

But all the spending by other candidates pales in comparison to the GOP outlay for the Alaska governor whose expensive, designer outfits have been the topic of fashion pages and magazines.

What hasn’t been apparent is where the clothes came from – her closet back in Wasilla or from the campaign coffers in Washington.
The answer can be found inside the RNC’s September monthly financial disclosure report under “itemized coordinated expenditures.”
It’s a report that typically records expenses for direct mail, telephone calls and advertising. Those expenses do show up, but the report also has a new category of spending: “campaign accessories.”

September payments were also made to Barney’s New York ($789.72) and Bloomingdale’s New York ($5,102.71).
Macy’s in Minneapolis, another store fortunate enough to be situated in the Twin Cities that hosted last summer’s Republican National Convention, received three separate payments totaling $9,447.71. The entries also show a few purchases at Pacifier, a top notch baby store, and Steiniauf & Stroller Inc., suggesting $295 was spent to accommodate the littlest Palin to join the campaign trail. An additional $4,902.45 was spent in early September at Atelier, a high-class shopping destination for men."

Congress threatened with Martial Law if bill is not passed

davidraine says...

>> ^Aemaeth:
Notice he never said who was threatening. Call me a sheep, but it could have been his 12 year-old nephew saying that for all we know. Unless there's more to this story than is indicated by this video, there's nothing suggesting that anyone in power to enact martial law has suggested it. Doesn't mean anything to me at this point.

Sheep. (Sorry, couldn't resist)

Honestly, I think you're missing the point. The first question is "Do I trust those people involved," which you asked. You're right that it could have been anyone saying this, but the Bush Administration has a history of privately scaring members of Congress into complying with the Administration. The assertion cannot be verified, and I doubt both parties involved (Brad Sherman and the Administration), so more information is necessary.

The second question is "Which conclusion is better supported by existing evidence?" You may have asked this one and simply not written about it, but when I ask this question I end up believing Brad Sherman. For me the breaking point was the Republican National Convention. Both conventions had a large police presence and made some erroneous arrests (though many more were made at the RNC), but only the RNC carried out pre-emptive raids and targetted journalists for arrest. The raids were a scare tactic: Only seven arrests were made although over one-hundred homes were broken into. The suppression of journalism speaks for itself.

To me, that act goes beyond the distinctions of Republican or Democrat. Those people in power have shown that they are willing to do whatever it takes to remain in power. Since the doctrine of pre-emptive action worked so well overseas, it should work equally well here in the States, using the municipal police as the shock troops instead of the Marines. Such a thing seems like the mad ravings of a lunatic, except that watching how the police and National Guard conducted themselves in St. Paul seemed like watching a test drive of that strategy.

I honestly don't believe that the United States will reach that point. Even for an Administration that has grabbed power again and again without a second thought, the act of declaring martial law to maintain that power is very far fetched. Even in this country, there's a breaking point beyond which its citizens will not tolerate the rule of those in power. However, I don't doubt for a moment that the Administration would try to use the threat of martial law as a scare tactic aimed at another Executive power grab.

The McCains Take Sleaze to a Whole New Level.

Krupo says...

The only thing he skipped on in this *dark *femme video is that she ruptured her spinal chord, leading to the drugs. Well the current president is a drug user from the 70s according to records, and now we know the Republican candidate also is. I find it interesting that, "in her defense", the balanced Wikipedia entry points out that McCain was guilty of infidelity in the past with others well. Not exactly heartening.

Definitely an *election08 and *politics and a blowing the whistles *lies vid, but this is misuse of the terrible channel, hence I invoke *nochannel for that.

And incredibly forgiving too:

The McCains separated in late 1979;[13] Carol McCain accepted a divorce in February of 1980,[13] and John McCain filed for and obtained the uncontested divorce in Florida on April 2, 1980.[21] John McCain would later say, "My marriage's collapse was attributable to my own selfishness and immaturity more than it was to Vietnam, and I cannot escape blame by pointing a finger at the war. The blame was entirely mine."[18] Carol McCain would later echo those sentiments, saying the failure was not due to her accident[1] and that "I attribute [the breakup of our marriage] more to John turning 40 and wanting to be 25 again than I do to anything else."[18] He gave her a settlement that included alimony, child support, houses in Virginia and Florida, and lifelong financial support for her ongoing medical treatments resulting from the 1969 automobile accident.[1] John McCain and Hensley were married the month following the divorce.[18]

Carol McCain became a personal assistant to Nancy Reagan in fall 1979,[2] working with her on Ronald Reagan's 1980 presidential campaign, and then worked on the 1980 Republican National Convention and the 1981 Reagan inaugural.[2] In 1981, she became head of the White House Visitors Center, where she planned tours and dealt with special pleas of Washington officials.[2]

Despite the divorce, Carol McCain remained on good terms with John McCain,[18] and supported him in all his subsequent political campaigns.[1] She refused to discuss her marriage with an opponent of McCain's in 1982 who was seeking negative information about him.[22]

In 2003, Carol McCain moved to a bungalow in Virginia Beach, Virginia.[1] She continues to have difficulty walking, as a result of her accident.[1] She supports her ex-husband's 2008 presidential campaign, and told The Mail on Sunday in June 2008 that she was not bitter and that, "He’s a good guy. We are still good friends. He is the best man for president."[1]

(If you're going to be harsh, you'll point out that she too got divorced before marrying McCain, albeit under very different circumstances.)
