Laurie Anderson: Mass Media on the Individual
*promote Lou Reed's old lady's sage observations and the death of satanic media who offer-up hacks like lady gaga and miley cyrus as talent, and NBC, BBC, (insert acronym here) as information relative to meaning.
TEDTalks | Beardyman: The polyphonic me
vocal chords are an oscillation that creates a frequency, as is a guitar string or a sax reed. hence the waveforms are similar. then just fuck with it with delays, pitch shifting, compression, phasing, and all manners of eq.
Ladies and Gentlemen, Ms. Hillary Carlip

Launchpad is AWESOME
Well yes it's a valid musical instrument. So is the kazoo.
The act of playing it is very different from playing piano and is much less technically skilful than learning to play the flute. I play clarinet, saxophone, flute and piano. They each have a different level of difficulty. Piano is the easiest, and clarinet is the hardest. The very hardest instruments to learn are the double reeds - oboe, cor anglais, and bassoon. The very easiest are the percussion family - drums, piano, all other keyboards.
I guess this is why I'm so opinionated about this...
@WaterDweller, @harlequinn The point surely is that this is a valid musical instrument - it just isn't new or even that clever. It's a just a in a reformed to fit in a DJ booth. The act of playing it isn't that different from piano and less technically skillful than say learning the Flute.
Show me someone creating dub step live from samples created by a digitally processed string instrument and i really will be impressed.
How Republicans Went Crazy and Democrats Became Useless

Flash Flood Beginning Near Virgin Utah & Zion National Park
We got to see a dry-weather creek start running when we were in Austin. Looked just like this, on a 1/20th scale. Instead of trees, it was reeds and twigs on the front surge, the creek being about 5-8 foot across in full flow. Still a pretty amazing sight.
Bizarre Spinning Bark Stuck in River
There's an alligator with a fishing rod just on the other side of those reeds, waiting for a foolish human to be distracted by that lure.
Steve Goodman - City of New Orleans - OGWT 1972
Moving this video to reed's personal queue. It failed to receive enough votes to get sifted up to the front page within 2 days.
Fantastic Yet Unappreciated Interview With Bill Hicks
I love Bill Hicks but now I want to see the Oliver Reed segment, looks like he stumbled in late and bit shitfaced.
Wild Swimming -- introducing "natural" swimming pools
I know of some local places that do fishing, and the water in those places is crystal clear. They plant specific types of grasses and reeds to filter and are very picky about what happens around the lake. I'd be rather annoying to upkeep it especially with the winters coming in and freezing it.
I just suspect anything I did would end up with snakes in it. So I'd have to have a lot of land where I could put something like that in......and then destroy it when it became a snake breeding ground.
Africans Highest Achievers in US Universities
The reason is this , in general most african countries are pore so the only the ritchest fsamilies in africa will get to send kids to USA and given the distance and cost they have to make the most of it or they will get boloxed by there family they will also be aware of how fucked they might be if they don't get a high degree.
the same thing happens with indean and Chinese students or allot of students that are studying in another nation to there own , if you are going to another country to specifcsly study something chances are you have a specifc motivation and will be sumone that will work harder at the given subject.
another factor is that forghen students in a given nation are often older and have held jobs and so have more maturity and drive than your average native student thats just progressed through the schooling system . In uk you find allot of Scandinavian students that come into degrees have more knowlage and practical skills than some of the lecturers and are simply doing the degree for the paper at the end that says they have a degree/masters.
We are at a time where you can easily pick up a 1970s standerd of knowlage from the internet alone its all there years of lectures and free acces to reeding materals , grante din the 70s you could get allot from books but the internet offers a streem line way to learn and comunication with people that can help guide you where as pre 80s you would realy have to be told what books to get or buy acess to the knowlage and tutorship.
In Memoriam: Bands We Lost In 2011
I knew of
Double Dagger ... punky band from baltimore
LCD Soundsystem ... guy who runs DFA but LCD was bigger than his own label somehow.
REM ... duh
The White Stripes ... duh
Ludicra ... metal band from east bay that had a wicked female vocalist
The Stills ... fuck em
Ponytail ... some weirdo mathy band from baltimore that probably should not have had a vocalist at all.
and Sonic Youth. Had no idea Sonic Youth threw in the towel but knew that Thurston and Kim are getting divorced which is sad in and of itself.
All I know is that I did not see Lou Reed or Metallica on the list ... leaves me disappointed.

>> ^Kofi:
My favorite philosopher. His books Outside ethics and Politics and the real are fantastic. I can't wait to watch this later tonight.
BTW Westy, he's a philosopher. Being overly verbose is what they do
lol I know but its just stupid , any intelligent person will evaluate an argument or what is being said by the core information facts and logic , not the poetry and colourful use of language , in this context especially where he is presenting to university students it makes little sense for him to be so verbose and shouting.
If his books are more concise then id defiantly reed them.
