Police Brutality... Then the people fight back.

Sorry if you felt offended.

But I didn't call you ignorant. Sorry that I didn't recognize what you posted as a "sincere philosophical inquiry." Unfortunately, I do think you are naive.

However, please note that I just sent this PM to someone about the "debate" on the comment stream:

"There is a place for the passionate -- they provide a service to our complacent society, in keeping the middle on their toes." (Then I said something that was a little rude, so I am not sharing that with you. I don't want to offend you.)

However, I didn't engage because I disagree with the factual basis of your point of view.

I agree with you that police abuses must be dealt with. I don't know what else you want from me. What do you want me to say? What do you want me to believe?

Convince me that there is some basis for moving forward on this topic, and I'll re-engage.

Promise.

(I normally send this kind of thing privately, but since you have spanked me publicly ("I thought you had better manners"), I shall "apologize" publicly -- not much of an apology is it?)

In reply to this comment by GenjiKilpatrick:
Imply that I'm an idiot (for agreeing with that guy's statement)
Call me naive & ignorant.
Then ignore my sincere philosophical inquiry because you disagree with the wording?

I thought you had better manners, bareboard. = /

Couldn't you just address the substance of my comment instead of nitpicking at the syntax?

Why make your opinion known in a community such as VideoSift - of all places, if you're not willing to discuss the substance of that opinion?

>> ^bareboards2:

I had no idea how much of an idiot this guy is. "The police force in America does not exist for public safety." This is so laughably stupid.

>> ^bareboards2:

I don't believe our government is blatantly corrupt. I think that you are naive in thinking that, and show a lack of understanding of history and the definition of corrupt.
I don't agree with your 15% figure of "good cops.

...so the rest of the comment is ignored.
I'm out of here.

Have you tried explaining to her what fascism is?

Fourteen Defining
Characteristics Of Fascism
By Dr. Lawrence Britt
Source Free Inquiry.co
5-28-3

Dr. Lawrence Britt has examined the fascist regimes of Hitler (Germany), Mussolini (Italy), Franco (Spain), Suharto (Indonesia) and several Latin American regimes. Britt found 14 defining characteristics common to each:

1. Powerful and Continuing Nationalism - Fascist regimes tend to make constant use of patriotic mottos, slogans, symbols, songs, and other paraphernalia. Flags are seen everywhere, as are flag symbols on clothing and in public displays.

2. Disdain for the Recognition of Human Rights - Because of fear of enemies and the need for security, the people in fascist regimes are persuaded that human rights can be ignored in certain cases because of "need." The people tend to look the other way or even approve of torture, summary executions, assassinations, long incarcerations of prisoners, etc.

3. Identification of Enemies/Scapegoats as a Unifying Cause - The people are rallied into a unifying patriotic frenzy over the need to eliminate a perceived common threat or foe: racial , ethnic or religious minorities; liberals; communists; socialists, terrorists, etc.

4. Supremacy of the Military - Even when there are widespread
domestic problems, the military is given a disproportionate amount of government funding, and the domestic agenda is neglected. Soldiers and military service are glamorized.

5. Rampant Sexism - The governments of fascist nations tend to be almost exclusively male-dominated. Under fascist regimes, traditional gender roles are made more rigid. Divorce, abortion and homosexuality are suppressed and the state is represented as the ultimate guardian of the family institution.

6. Controlled Mass Media - Sometimes to media is directly controlled by the government, but in other cases, the media is indirectly controlled by government regulation, or sympathetic media spokespeople and executives. Censorship, especially in war time, is very common.

7. Obsession with National Security - Fear is used as a motivational tool by the government over the masses.

8. Religion and Government are Intertwined - Governments in fascist nations tend to use the most common religion in the nation as a tool to manipulate public opinion. Religious rhetoric and terminology is common from government leaders, even when the major tenets of the religion are diametrically opposed to the government's policies or actions.

9. Corporate Power is Protected - The industrial and business aristocracy of a fascist nation often are the ones who put the government leaders into power, creating a mutually beneficial business/government relationship and power elite.

10. Labor Power is Suppressed - Because the organizing power of labor is the only real threat to a fascist government, labor unions are either eliminated entirely, or are severely suppressed.

11. Disdain for Intellectuals and the Arts - Fascist nations tend to promote and tolerate open hostility to higher education, and academia. It is not uncommon for professors and other academics to be censored or even arrested. Free expression in the arts and letters is openly attacked.

12. Obsession with Crime and Punishment - Under fascist regimes, the police are given almost limitless power to enforce laws. The people are often willing to overlook police abuses and even forego civil liberties in the name of patriotism. There is often a national police force with virtually unlimited power in fascist nations.

13. Rampant Cronyism and Corruption - Fascist regimes almost always are governed by groups of friends and associates who appoint each other to government positions and use governmental power and authority to protect their friends from accountability. It is not uncommon in fascist regimes for national resources and even treasures to be appropriated or even outright stolen by government leaders.

14. Fraudulent Elections - Sometimes elections in fascist nations are a complete sham. Other times elections are manipulated by smear campaigns against or even assassination of opposition candidates, use of legislation to control voting numbers or political district boundaries, and manipulation of the media. Fascist nations also typically use their judiciaries to manipulate or control elections.

I'm not in the chorus line of people who usually say "cops are never held accountable," but I am in the chorus line of people who say "cops are rarely held accountable." I stand by that.
I have little faith in our government. All three branches are broken. And Obama is proving himself to be more and more a typical politician these days. So it should be no surprise that law enforcement (a part of the government) would also be broken.
I'm not an anarchist. I'm not a minarchist. I'm not a libertarian. I'm just a pissed-off liberal. Most Americans have gotten lazy, across the entire political spectrum, not watching the government as closely as we should. And we've allowed corporate interests to control the government. But that really shouldn't be a surprise to anyone. Our vaunted Founding Fathers created our representative democracy, which was designed that way primarily so that the wealthy would have more control than the rabble, so it's basically been that way since the beginning. It only got worse over time, especially when corporations were granted the status of legal personhood by the Supreme Court.
So here we are. Sure, cops get prosecuted for wrongdoing some of the time. Gotta throw the public a bone every once in a while. But the remainder of the time police abuse is allowed to slip through the cracks, just like most cases of white collar crime aren't even investigated, just like most cases of political corruption never see the light of day. Yet we'll send some kid to the big house for possessing a nickel bag. It's all part of the same crippled, disfigured beast.
Can we fix this fucking mess, or is it a hopeless case? I don't know for sure. I want a decent country for my son. Maybe the best thing I can do for him is emigrate, but a lot of other countries are fucked too. (Thank you, Canada, for letting us know that your cops aren't any better than ours.) I still vote, and I still throw a little green at a few political figures and causes I believe in. (Sorry Obama, but don't count on my contribution in 2012.) Still it seems like I'm shoveling shit against the tide, but I feel like I gotta try something. Anything.
So I'm a cycnical bastard. But I think I've got a right to be.>> ^NetRunner:
I'm waiting for the chorus line of people who usually say "cops are never held accountable" to show up and explain to us that they're certain the cops still won't face any punishment for what they did...
Because, by their logic, if the video clip doesn't show Obama personally beheading all six officers, you know nothing will happen because the justice system never, ever works right. Ever.

So humanity really is the f-cked up part of nations. Well, that goes without saying. All I can do is teach my children a better way and protect them all I can. It is all any man or woman can do.

In this PC world we live in with cameras all over the place, at least where I live, cops are now being hammered. Something that would get you or me just jail time now gets a cop jail time and fired. Take drunk driving. Most jobs, no biggie. Law enforcement down here? Instant termination.

Remember too that regular joes get away with incredible amounts of crimes every day, just like cops--or more so... Some murder, some rape, some selling drugs or child pornography...

I won't argue with the premise of your post--you did very well. I am just pointing out that cops get away with the same or less than citizens get away with. We do have a f-cked up system, but that starts at home--not behind the badge.

G8/G20 - Crash The Meeting

Throbbin says...

Yes, the media has been fair in the aftermath of the G8/G20, but what about the rest of the time? Watching The National or CTV News is a combination of 1 or 2 deep, penetrating stories interspersed with 'human interest' stories about some teenager somewhere who won a science fair or something. Much goes unreported in our national media.>> ^Krupo:

Funny they call the Canadian media a source of propaganda - they've been remarkably fair and balanced - in the sense that they've clearly shown the police abuses and hammered after the police in press conferences.

Small riot breaks out at SB1070 protest - Live Leak

KnivesOut says...

I understand that you're concerned about "illegals" using public services that you feel they don't deserve.

What I'm saying is: this law is broken because it leaves the definition of what an illegal alien looks like up to individual police officers. The clear cases aren't the problem, its the unclear ones that make this law unconstitutional. These law-makers are inspired by racists, and are attempting to address a brutally complex issue with a sledgehammer instead of a scalpel.

If you were a legal, American-born Hispanic person, how would you feel about having to constantly carry your ID, for fear that you might be asked for it during your daily jog, for example? How would you feel the 1st time that a cop asked you to show your papers, when you're walking down the street minding your own business? The 5th? 10th? If you told him to piss off, because you know that you're legal and he has no right to ask (so says the Constitution), you've just given him probable cause to arrest you until you can prove your legality.

Probable cause is blank check for police abuse.

CopsOutofControl says...

The police have too much power, are above the law and have no accountability or oversight. If we do not bow down to their barking orders we are subject to torture from tasers, pepper spray, beatings, arrest and criminal charges. We have been conditioned to fear the police. Most of us are terrified to even disagree with them even when they are blatantly wrong. Groups of people watch as police assault and batter people. If we even touch an officer we are subject to felony charges. We need police reform.
