"Look Up" a poem about Social Media

Babymech says...

Holy shit, that's creepy... you've been following me since fifth grade? Eww.

I know where luddite comes from, and I know how it's used today; maybe you're thinking of me when I was in fifth grade? If so, stop that. Please. Please stop.

You have no idea where the word Luddite comes from, and no you didn't write better poems in the 5th grade.

Street Harassment Of Women In New York - An Art Project

bareboards2 says...

Maybe if you just respected that these women have a problem, they are not you, and they don't know you in particular say it to both men and women.

I find it perplexing that video after video after video is posted on this site, explaining women's experience, and man after man after man post a comment arguing about it.

Please stop making this about you, my friend, and just BELIEVE WHAT THEY SAY. Video after video after video .... there is something that is trying to be communicated.

Having said all this -- I have never been street harassed to the extent that these women have been. I have had folks say to me -- smile! and it hasn't been an issue. I took it the way you mean when you say it. But I don't live where they do. And I believe them when they tell their experiences, even though their experiences don't match mine.

Sagemind said:

Well, If they'd just smile, we wouldn't need this.
I don't live in a big city like New York so obviously I just don't understand...

But, what's wrong with Smiling? Saying, "Smile" is like saying, "Cheer up"
I say it to both guys and women alike. I don't feel like being friendly and nice to strangers is a negative thing. My point is, I'd hate for something like this to stop people from trying to share some cheer. It's sort of a catch all reaction to something specific.

What happens if you reverse sex roles in advertising?

JustSaying says...

I only upvoted because I'm a sexist pig (titties!). The video fails in two points.
1. The nerdy guy in the second ad isn't hot by any definition (sorry dude) but the nerdy girl is just an attractive woman wearing glasses. Is it really so hard to find an ugly woman? Seriously, can we please stop that stupid idea that glasses make people ugly? And no, I don't wear any.
2. Why do men look ridiculous in these ads and womwen don't? What a stupid question.
Imagine a very attractive woman wearing nothing but knee high socks posing in different ways. Most of these possible poses will look more or less sexual/sexy, a few vulgar and even fewer acrobatic/weird. There will very, very, very few poses where she's going to look stupid.
Now imagine a very attractive man wearing nothing but knee high socks posing the same way. How many poses can you picture in your mind until you reach one that looks ridiculous? How many can you imagine that don't look ridiculous at all?
And now, for the extra challenge, imagine the guy having a huge erection. Yep, it get's harder (not an intended pun).
The male body with it's floppy dong is as naturally ridiculous as the female body is naturally sexy. It's very deeply ingrained in our human minds. That's why most jokes about homosexuality make make men their butt (yes, that pun was intended and I think it's pure genius, thankyouverymuch).

Oakland CA Is So Scary Even Cops Want Nothing To Do With It

newtboy says...

OMFG!!!Wow... I guess I have to answer that.
Why do you continue to refer to the utopian free market that you admit never existed, you can't possibly know how it would turn out since you have nothing to reference, so please stop acting like you "know" how it would be, that's simply making your politics a religion, with no need to explain and no basis for your argument but supposition.
If only more people would vote FOR a candidate instead of out of fear of the "other" candidate, my political "regulation" would work great. I can't control others, only try to explain my position and hope they agree.
I am quite happy where I am, but I also know other places are not as nice. I feel it's mostly due to overpopulation/high population density, but that's another subject altogether.
I'm sorry your experience with police is so one sided...I do wish it were not so. I think blaming them for an accident during a car chase may be a little unfair, not knowing the details I'll reserve judgment. I would hope you were properly compensated if it's as you suggest. My experiences have been both unpleasant and helpful, but I could understand the position of the one's that were unhelpful, even if I disagreed completely. My wish is that others would understand that, on average, having police is far better than not (even when they end up not always helping YOU), without needing personal NEED for the police to understand...I'm including you in that wish.
You would lose that bet...I'm a landlord.
I'm disabled and don't take a dime in public assistance, but pay my fair share for having roads and water systems (and then some) because it's a good thing to have them for everyone. I could find ways to pay less taxes, or fight for them with my vote...I just see that as shirking a duty owed to one's fellow citizens, so I don't. No man is an island.
So, no $35 real security exists that you'll show us? Can't imagine why that would be. No evidence, no existence.
By your logic, taxes are voluntary, you can choose not to live in the US and you don't get thrown in jail for not paying them. (most HOA's have a clause where they can take your home if you don't pay).
Again, you claim you don't care about my thoughts, but you continue to prove you do by responding.....you do see that, right? I don't claim to not care about your position, I try to not simply ignore those I disagree with as that tends to end intellectual evolution on both sides. Sometimes it's a futile effort.....
Again, because I don't want to disband the government doesn't mean I (or others) LIKE it, but we do have control, we simply need to assert it in thoughtful ways, not react out of fear of the possible future. That's my viewpoint anyway.

How to avoid jump cuts

thegrimsleeper says...

Oh, yes please stop it. These annoying jump cuts between every other sentence or more are among the most annoying things people do in their videos. I usually try and avoid watching those videos but sometimes their content is very good even though the creators are crap at editing them.

We are taught everything you mentioned through life. School is to educate through science rather than religion. Accept that this is the end of faith you parrot. Please stop your video productions — you are not saying anything original at all and it is a waste of time. PONTIFICATION.

In order to learn you have to stop believing and keep your head out of your ass at the same time. I cannot find your head anywhere.

Wealth Inequality in America

renatojj says...

@enoch I'm not hostile towards those who disagree with me, but towards those who intentionally misrepresent me. I'm guessing you once met some fundamentalist hard-headed fox news republican whatever, and you think I'm that guy. I'm not. So, please stop misrepresenting me, it's really annoying.

You suggest letting government/society burn? Sure, maybe that's what we're headed to anyways. I don't treat politics as discussing "what should we do", that's irrelevant if you and I can't agree on what's actually wrong. To me, it's more about understanding the problem.

@dag The problem I see in how you're using examples outside of America is that what you suggest as a solution in another country can just as much be an example of another country's success despite what you're pointing out as the solution.

"we tax the rich a lot in Australia and everything is better over here". Ok. What if Australia would be better off if you didn't tax the rich so much? Then you'd be just proposing we do what's not helping Australia to help America, all the while overlooking whatever is actually working in Australia.

It does seem somewhat obvious that taxing the rich would forcefully reduce wealth inequality, but then we wouldn't be looking at what's causing the inequality, just trying to punch it out of existence with taxes, and possibly establishing more social injustice in the process. To me, it seems quite unfair to tax someone more just for being richer, a moral hazard even (punishing productivity?), but moral concerns are passé and don't seem to bother anyone these days.

@shatterdrose I treat a smaller government solution as something like a paradigm shift. You see government doing things right in country X, Y or Z, and I see them as, most likely, taking credit for what they're not fucking up. I mean, seriously, don't you know governments do that all the time?

There are plenty of people who unfairly benefit from government, but government is mostly not a net benefit to society, and those people will lie through their goddamned teeth about how much good they do, usually taking credit for anything working in society. There sure are plenty of suckers who believe them.

Wanting less government is not snap judgement, it's not dogma, it's quite often what no one ever considers.

Wanting more government is the convenient way out, governments are the agents of every social planner's wet dreams. In their minds, governments always have "unlimited" resources, they're always above any law, they're never morally wrong, and they're always run by honest uncorruptible people.

I love your "get involved" answer to criticizing government. What you don't seem to realize is that I'm criticizing how much government IS involved. That can hardly be changed from the inside. People who run for government always want a bigger piece of the pie, they're not likely to win on a "we want less pie" platform.
