VideoSift 3.3 Roundtable (Sift Talk Post)

Lots of good ideas - we're writing these up and some will definitely go into 3.3.

For people who say that VideoSift needs to change its aesthetics - I'm wondering what they have in mind?

We're very text based now, and I would describe the layout as "functional" because we have a lot of information to fit into limited screen space. We've stripped out things like graphical vote buttons and curvy corners for maximum information density.

If anyone has ideas around design or layout changes - how about some screen shots? A picture speaks a thousand words - and I like seeing new design ideas.

Boarding a train that does not need to stop to pick you up

deathcow says...

What if people get stuck in traffic on the way to the station, so they miss their train? This "new" design does nothing to help that. What if not only the miss their train but they left earlier to make it on time, so they missed their favorite show also? big help.

New Revolutionaries of Design

shatterdrose says...

This is amazing. I will definitely be getting some of his books, if anything, just for the case studies. Enzoblue is right, this is stuff that makes a difference and oddly, as noted in the video, not just the best thing for people but also for our economy. Come on, if Wal-Mart thinks going "green" and incorporating new design features brings them more money, and at the same time reduce their carbon footprint, it's obviously good for the bottom line too. Light bulbs that last 20 years and produce no heat? Amazing that companies used to think it was common practice to put a bulb that creates heat into a freezer . . .

Microsoft + Mitsubishi's iPhone killer - see-thru handheld

jmzero says...

Obviously this implementation isn't exactly ready for the public - but I think the idea is sound. How do you maximize the size of a screen (which people want, especially for games/movies) while still giving a fast typing surface (which a device needs if it is to act as a computer replacement)? Those are problems everyone in the space is trying to solve - even if this exact idea isn't used I'm sure it'll inspire some new design concepts.

Purdue University models the 9/11 WTC attack computationally

Doc_M says...

So I've recently been informed that the "steal core" of the WTC was not encased in concrete but was of a new design at the time and was instead coated with a simple fire-proofing foam... which this video claims to take into account. So if you down-voted because it was embedded in concrete, you might re-check your sources.

Rage.

doom 3 is actually a relay good game the problem was that Id underestimated how stubern the FPS market is. Id should have also made it more clear that doom3 was a horror game more than anything else though marketing.

A good example of fps gamers not "getting" it with doom 3 is the perceived issue with the flashlight. the game used a mechanic involving the flashlight where the player is very vulnerable when using the light however the light is the only real method to see into allot of the dark spots and navigate some of the levels. What this in fact dose is increase tension and additionally the dark levels allow for the sound to build suspense and drive the game play.

My perception of Id as a company is that thay push technology far more than thay push design. However having sead that due to the way games currently are allot of new design is derived from new technology so as a company id do there fair share of pushing design as well i just wouldn't expect the next half life/ flash piont/ dues ex/thief . from a company like ID.

always worth getting used to ID,s quake/doom engines and Epics unreal engines as both companies provide the technology for most the fps games made.

Tour of the depths of the Chernobyl reactor and sarcophagus

codenazi says...

Sigh... I never understood people's irrational fear of nuclear power. It usually centers around "big" events like Chernobyl and "long term" events having to do with the waste.

There's a lot of miss-information about both fears on the anti-nuclear side, though. Chernobyl was their, own fault - they shut down many hours of warnings and interlocks to try and run a test they were late on. The plant kept trying to shut itself down, and they overrode it. This is bad, but it's easily fixed with new designs. And as was also mentioned, even in the case of a huge failure, all modern reactors have containment shells.

The waste fear is particularly laughable, though. Most of this stuff was around in one from or another already - we just mined it out. More to the point, though, if it's dangerous, it's usable fuel! We can just keep burning it, until it finally decays to something that's fairly safe. We are barely touching the possible reactor types we could be using... I wonder if these types know that current coal plants put out more uranium waste than is used in all our nuclear reactors. That is the tragedy that should be shut down.

The kicker, though, is what to do without nuclear power. Shutdown the world and go without? (I know some neo-nippies that want that...) Use our current fossil-fuel power? Energy needs only go up in huge ways, and we need something. Solar/etc is nowhere near efficient enough yet. Nuclear power really is the green choice for the foreseeable future.

VideoSift 2.0 Preview and Jennifer Gray (Sift Talk Post)

dotdude says...

I like the new design. It succeeds in consolidating all the navigating links and tabs.

One thing I will suggest for the Front Page and Sift Talk is maybe some blue and/or gray screens (light tints) for the round cornered boxes to help differentiate them some. There’s maybe a bit too much white leaving things washed out.

*taking off my graphic design hat, putting on my typesetting hat*

Looking at the front page and the Sift Talk, the leading is a bit tight (vertical space between lines of type). The spacing between type characters is also a bit tight. It makes it harder to read.

The type on “About VideoSift”, “FAQ” and “Posting Guidelines” page doesn’t adjust when you change the size of the window. The length of the line of type is a bit long. I know the “alphabet and a half rule” for a line measure is not hard and fast (type structure varies), but having it so long inhibits reading.

On the front page, I want to suggest putting a little more space between the different links and the separation marks. It is a little difficult to differentiate between them.

One bug I did notice is a URL that stuck out across the border on the Sift Talk page of initial posts.

As for the Incoming tab . . . doesn’t that invite comparisons to Video Bomb? Does this mean that we will no longer refer to the queue?

Also, will there still be a sorting options for the new videos. I noticed that was not in the new design.

Back to sifting before I have any more graphic design/typesetting flashbacks . . . I survived grocery ads and hospital forms.

Hey Dag, wonderful new design taking my first stroll through it and so far am very impressed! Thanks to everyone who makes this site possible.

The only minor quip I have so far is, is it possible to remove the bounding boxes between each of the video/blogpost/etc, the clear white presentation was nicer I think and the lines between each video listed kinda ruin that.

The dupe finder is very key! Hopefully this will end the dupes, though I know multiple videos are usually posted multiple times by multiple users. But a amazing addition nonetheless.

I can't wait for it to go live!

The New New VideoSift - and Help us Find a Logo (Sift Talk Post)

"One thing that we would really like to include with the new design is ajax commenting"
I just wrote an Ajax-based commenting system around your current commenting code. Take a look at it here: http://www.rommelsantor.com/videosift/comment.php

Obviously, comments are not updated in any type of database, but it is pretty much plug-and-play ready. You will just need about one or two minor code changes to story.php and to modify my source files to work with your existing system. If you're at all interested in this, just let me know.

The new design simplifies everything. From what I see, it makes getting around look easier. On the left there is an “add tags.” That is for everyone to add additional tags? And you’re reducing the “top 15” to “top 10”?

As for the logo discussion, I prefer simplified graphic icons. The image of “panning for gold” is not simple nor is the “flour sifter”. Finding something to communicate what VideoSift does is going to be tough. Logos need to work when made tiny on business envelopes, etc.

Isn't it just called a gold pan SG? or is it a seive or something?

HamFist - thanks for the offer of help. One thing that we would really like to include with the new design is ajax commenting so we can leave comments without interrupting the videos. If you know of any good libraries for this, that would be appreciated. We tried adapting the WordPress one, but didn't go too well.

Angry Customer

What is it about the human brain that can completely malfunction and say:

"Sure, it's worth it, I'll spend the next ten years being Big Bubba's love partner in Cell Block C, if I can just get my point over on these auto guys."

Meanwhile, the dealership collects on major insurance and renovates the showroom into the new design they've been wishing they had for a few years.... Send a card to the prison "Thanks you nutjob, here are some pictures of our new showroom!"

We laugh at the bat throwing, base dusting coach but he's a master of self control next to this guy.

This guy was lucky he didnt trap someone in a bathroom and burn them to death.
