Evolution meets Religion (Science Talk Post)

When I said 'something can't turn into something different.' I was referring more to a species rather then an individual animal. But that's my bad I didn't clarify.

Actually there is more to the creation story then you see in todays bible. In it's original Hebrew the text changes quite a bit. Because the sound of each character can be broken down into other letters. If it had been translated in that way Genesis would be a lot longer. And the Bible was never meant to be a historical or anthropological record. If can prove that do so, but just saying that it is doesn't make you right.

My guess is you never read the Book of Genesis and that if you did you don't understand the context of the people who wrote it. Hebrew is largely allegorical.

Edit: I would like to add that we gain the book of Genesis from the hand of Mosses as he received an account from his forefathers. Moses obtained the history and traditions of the fathers, and from these picked out what he considered necessary, and that account was handed down from age to age.

Wither or not God made the earth is six days or six billion years is, and most likely will remain a matter of speculation. I think it will continue to remain a matter of speculation.

The original Hebrew word for day is 'Yom' now keep in mind the Hebrew language is not as diverse as the English language is.
Besides day there are other words associated with Yom namely:
-Time
-Year
-Age
-Ago
-Always
-Season
-Chronicals
-Continually
-Ever
-Evermore

When the bible was translated Yom was seen as day by the scribes at the time and was thus set in the English version of the bible as day. Which is a very specific word in the English language which has over 40,000 as opposed to the Hebrew vocabulary with has roughly 8,700 words

Buddy Holly - The Day The Music Died- American Pie

eric3579 says...

Verse 1
A long long time ago
I can still remember how that music used to make me smile
And I knew if I had my chance
That I could make those people dance
And maybe they'd be happy for a while
But February made me shiver
With every paper I'd deliver
Bad news on the doorstep
I couldn't take one more step
I can't remember if I cried
When I read about his widowed bride
But something touched me deep inside
The day the music died

So, bye-bye, Miss American Pie
Drove my chevy to the levee
But the levee was dry
And them good old boys were drinkin' whiskey and rye
Singin' this'll be the day that I die
This'll be the day that I die

Verse 2
Did you write the Book of Love
And do you have faith in God above
If the Bible tells you so
Do you believe in rock n' roll
Can music save your mortal soul
And can you teach me how to dance real slow
Well, I know that you're in love with him
'Cause I saw you dancin' in the gym
You both kicked off your shoes
Man, I dig those rhythm & blues
I was a lonely, teenage broncin' buck
With a pink carnation and a pickup truck
But I knew I was out of luck
The day the music died
I started singin'

Verse 3
Now for ten years we've been on our own
And moss grows fat on a rollin' stone
But that's not how it used to be
When the Jester sang for the King and Queen
In a coat he borrowed from James Dean
In a voice that came from you and me
Oh, and while the King was looking down
The Jester stole his thorny crown
The courtroom was adjourned
No verdict was returned
And while Lenin read a book on Marx
The quartet practiced in the park
And we sang dirges in the dark
The day the music died
We were singin'

Verse 4
Helter Skelter in a summer swelter
The birds flew off with a fallout shelter
Eight miles high and falling fast
It landed foul on the grass
The players tried for a forward pass
With the Jester on the sidelines in a cast
Now the half-time air was sweet perfume
While the Sergeants played a marching tune
We all got up to dance
Oh but we never got the chance
'Cause the players tried to take the field
The marching band refused to yield
Do you recall what was revealed
The day the music died
We started singing

Verse 5
Oh, and there we were, all in one place
A generation lost in space
With no time left to start again
So come on, Jack, be nimble, Jack be quick
Jack Flash sat on a candlestick
'Cause fire is the devils only friend
Oh, and as I watched him on the stage
My hands were clenched in fists of rage
No angel born in Hell
Could break that Satan's spell
And as flames climbed high into the night
To light the sacrificial rite
I saw Satan laughing with delight
The day the music died
He was singing

Verse 6
I met a girl who sang the blues
And I asked her for some happy news
But she just smiled and turned away
I went down to the sacred store
Where I'd heard the music years before
But the man there said the music wouldn't play

And in the streets the children screamed
The lovers cried, and the poets dreamed
But not a word was spoken
The church bells all were broken
And the three men I admire most
The Father, Son and the Holy Ghost
They caught the last train for the coast
The day the music died
And they were singin'

Bye-bye, Miss American Pie
Drove my chevy to the levy
But the levy was dry
And them good old boys were drinking whiskey and rye
Singing this'll be the day that I die

They were singin'
Bye-bye, Miss American Pie
Drove my chevy to the levy
But the levy was dry
And them good old boys were drinking whiskey and rye
Singing this'll be the day that I die

and actually, NCFOM held me and Soupskin's attention the entire time. Believe me, we were RIVETTED by it. So much so that the credits had been rolling a while before we fully took in that it was over.

What I did miss, and I think this is bad direction/production is that Moss was dead. The camera showed it for all of a second (maybe) and I was supposed to deduce that fact from his clothes, being as he was one more body lying on the floor covered in blood?
I'm not stupid by any means, I'm not inattentive - especially during that movie - but I am nearsighted slightly and I COMPLETELY missed that Moss was dead. Thus perhaps the ending missed the mark for me a bit. I didn't know Carla Jean was a widow when she made her statment. She mentioned her mother dying and that was it. That's some crappy acting/direction right there. I "get" subtlty. I'm probably the only person in the whole bible belt who "got" "Jacob's Ladder" and rolled my eyes at how overdone the ending was (still in my top five of movies) so it's not that I "missed" the meaning. I just feel that the ending was not meaningful (as was the whole movie) it was thematic

-------Spoilers-------

NCFOM does have quite a bit of humor in it and isn't nearly as dark or gloomy as se7en. It plays as a tight little thriller for 2/3rds and then turns very real, which is a nice twist you don't see coming.

If you like Coen films like Blood Simple or Fargo, then this one shouldn't be a problem.

The meaning of the film is in the title, and this revelation is tossed at you very softly minutes before the abrupt end of the film, so don't blink or go to the bathroom.

------MAJOR SPOILER-------

The scary dude DOES get called on his pseudo masculine fatalist bullshit by the wife just before she is killed. She tells him that he is the one who makes the decision to murder, not coins or games. His mojo is thrown off, which results in a nasty car accident. I personally assume that the character recovers to kill again, but with out the glee and games of the past. In keeping with the title, I believe he becomes an old man in that scene, just like TLJ in the last hotel scene.

There is plenty of meaning in the film if you want to find it.

IMO, this is one of the best films of the year. It held my complete attention up until the very last scene, which I missed because I went to the bathroom.

WTF Pats? (Sports Talk Post)

MycroftHomlz says...

Oh, and did you see Eli's Great Escape. This was the single greatest Super Bowl of all time.

Do you realize that this is second time a Manning has come back to beat Tom Brady's Patriots? It's in their blood, Manning's are genetically engineered to beat Tom Brady.

This game was amazing. And Tom Brady and the offensive line are the one's who lost this game. The OL let the Giant get way too much pressure on the QB, and Brady consistently over threw Moss.

Interesting 3D Virtual Drawing--

rosspruden says...

They had something like this in Red Planet, that film with Val Kilmer, Carrie Anne Moss, Tom Sizemore, etc. It was a transluscent monitor screen used as a map overlay (and pliable enough to be rolled up!), so I *know* there's an application for this kind of technology. Very cool!

What a MarineGunrock actually does

8451 says...

Guns, I was a 13B for over 2 years before moving on to a more exciting 89D. And I only used the tray for rocket, chems, copperheads and nukes (practice rounds, not real ones), and pretty much anything over 120 lbs. Hand loading the round gets easy after about a year, and you don't seat it, you just lip it by hand and seat it by ram. No Ahnold needed, just 190lbs of piss and vinegar. BTW, do you have some footage shooting Red Bag?

And to address to cost issue, it's the cheapest way of putting steel on target there is. The fully fitted cannon is under $1.5M and the rounds are, per M-Guns, $400 a pop. And artillery has the highest survival rate of all combat MOSs. Very cost effective.

Guns, I take it you were no 02G...

well if you want names, there's Graham Hill, Gilles Villeneuve, Ayrton Senna, and Michael Schumacher. The b&w footage may be Sterling Moss, but I can't be sure.
and yeah, I would have picked a different song too.
Too bad, I actually found a better clip after I already posted this one, oh well...
