Stephen Fry and Jonathan Ross Discuss Language Evolution

Phreezdryd says...

So "mind meld" doesn't mean what we think it means?

Why does our language have to evolve through mistakes and typos? Wonky technology plus laziness equals new language? Seems like nothing more than ignorance and a bad attitude towards getting something correct.

Best/Worst Entertainment of 2012 Thread (Cinema Talk Post)

Radio: My favorite discovery of 2012 is "Radio Lab", a story telling show reminiscent of another favorite, 'This American Life', but with a much more sophisticated sound design. All episodes are available for free in the podcast section of iTunes.

Music: I fell in love with the New Orleans second line scene after Issy and I paid a visit to the crescent city this year. We saw the 'Rebirth Brass Band' live and had a great time. We also had a mini-meetup at the show with @dotdude. New Orleans music culture is like no other.

Music: Louis Cole & Genevieve Artadi: Highly unique and energetic electro-acoustic music. Hard to explain.

Music: Austin Texas band 'The Black Angels' - Dark, bluesy rock obviously influenced by the Doors. To be honest, I'm not crazy about blues rock or the Doors, but 'The Black Angels' manage to meld these influences into something I really dig.

Music: UK band, 'Metronomy'. Their sound is eclectic, hooky and heavily influenced by all the cool British 80's bands I loved as a kid. Goes down easy. Works in the background as well as the fore.

Movies: Django and Looper were the two films that captivated me from start to finish. Both films by gifted auteurs, one at the top of his game, the other on the rise. Great writing. Great Directing. Great performances.

Horror movies: The Cabin in the Woods (A clever and absurd meta-horror mashup) and the The Lady in Black (A classic, classy ghost story) both satisfied. It's nice that there were a couple of diamonds in sea of Paranormal-Activity-esque-found-footage detritus.

TV: same stuff that everyone else likes - BB, GoT, DoAb and Sherlock. I also got into Always Sunny in Philadelphia this year - very dark, very funny.

Books: Started a bunch, finished very few. Nothing to recommend. "Checklist Manifesto" is pretty interesting so far - it's about how the brain functions (or fails to function) in the information-dense present.

Games: 'Xcom' was a worthy update of the original. Loved all the detailed micro/macro strategy. 'Journey' was beautiful and fairly moving for a videogame.

American Atheists David Silverman: Hidden Bill O'Reilly

VoodooV says...

"if you don't have a god"

once again, god and religion are being melded into one thing. God and religion are two separate things.

"does a creator exist?" That's one question. There could be a creator, or there may not be one. I'm an agnostic because I say "I don't know." The definition of atheism that I *repeatedly* see states "no, there is no creator" so by that metric, agnostics are NOT atheists

Assuming you do believe that there is a creator, that leads to the second question, "what do you think that creator wants you to do?" That's where religion comes into play. What if there is a creator, but that creator doesn't care what you do? or what if that creator wants you to find your own way instead of being dictated to by commandments and popes and priests. So now you have a creator..but no religion. Personally, I've never had any problem with the idea of a creator, but this notion that a creator wants you to worship it and constantly give thanks is pretty absurd. Why would a creator NEED worship? why would it want it's creation spending a large amount of time worshiping it and doing it's bidding? Why would a creator need minions? why would a creator NEED subservient subjects? People refer to "God's Army" What does a creator need of an army? It's ridiculous.

A creator is one question, religion is another. There could be a creator, but even if there is, most, if not all religions are demonstrably stupid and/or harmful.

"Cicada" - (Australian Guy Tells A Horrific Childhood Story)

Sagemind says...

Perhaps this will shed some light on the subject:

"We posted the cut-from-real-life short drama Cicada a fortnight ago, and now we have the teaser trailer for Amiel Courtin-Wilson's feature follow up, simply titled Hail.

Hail is the evolved beast-cousin of Cicada, and is another docu-drama based on the real life stories of actor and ex-con Daniel P. Jones. The Hollywood Reporter describes it much better than I could:

Daniel P. Jones is an artistically inclined ex-convict playing a lightly fictionalized version of himself in Aussie auteur Amiel Courtin-Wilson's out-there docu-drama. Dissonant and brutal, but also unexpectedly tender, Hail melds coarse reality, extreme close-ups, nightmarish montages - including one featuring a dead horse falling from the sky - and a soundtrack that's alternately jarring and lovely.

Hail was the first Australian dramatic feature in nearly a decade to screen at the Venice International Film Festival and today we have word that the film has also been selected for Rotterdam, which starts later this month.

Now to that dead horse. As you can see in the teaser trailer below, the film features a sequence with a horse being dropped from a plane and falling slowly towards earth. It's pure madness, and 100% real. And I'm hoping makes sense in the final film. Tarsem eat your heart out!"
