LITTLE BIG - I'm OK

Why Should You Read James Joyce's "Ulysses"

ulysses1904 says...

He definitely put years into it. I first tried reading it cold, with no prep. I read the first 3 pages over and over and gave up, it made no sense. A few years later I read a book about it which was a huge help. Then I found an entire section at the Connecticut College library dedicated to it.

I'm still finding "hidden tracks" in it after reading it and reading about it for 25 years. Like how the first 3 chapters parallel the last 3 chapters. How Bloom's path at a certain point in the city resembles a question mark. The barmaid Sirens, the drunken lout Cyclops character, and all the other Odyssey parallels.

I visited the Martello tower from Chapter one when i went to Dublin, that was so cool to be there. I never did find Nelson's Pillar though. ;-)

I think this may be the book that Joyce said took him a lifetime to write so it would take a reader a lifetime to read (comprehend)

It's PR for the community and its spirit really.

To be honest it's not the average civilian i'd be worried about in any modern town, even in deprived areas. It's the pickpocket gangs, and drunken louts that can be more prevalent at night. I think the average every day civilian would at the very least be fair to the man in those circumstances, if not make some attempt to help him.

I live in Toronto, Canada... I can imagine the same thing CAN happen here with likely similar outcome. But, the potential risk great bodily injuries is not unimaginable either.

When you live in a big city, anything, good or bad, can happen with a roll of the dice.

Is it really smart PR?

Giraffe Copenhagen Zoo chief: 'I like animals'

newtboy says...

What's wrong with you? That's disgusting! You uncouth lout, you deserve a good slapping for that suggestion.
You should never boil and mash a baby, they're so much better roasted, skin on, with salt and rosemary.

Fausticle said:

You could do the same thing for potatoes. Replace 'potato' with 'baby'.

First you need to peel the baby and remove any eyes. Then chop and boil the baby until soft. Add some milk and water then mash the baby until you get an even smooth consistancy and serve with butter and salt.... mmmmm.

Judge Judy: Here's Who We Support With Our Tax Money

longde says...

Says you. I know Taiwanese immigrants, some of whom went to grad school with me and are very productive. I know others who are here illegally, making money by breaking the law. Same thing in Taiwan itself; there are hardworkers, shady folks, and yes lazy louts. Taiwanese/Taiwanese American culture is not inherently hardworking and meritocratic.

It's not the group its the individual; I thought you of all people might understand that.

Same thing with every low economic group in America. I know members of these groups who are hardworking, and others who are shady and lazy. No ethnic culture is inherently one way or another.

>> ^chilaxe:
Right, their motivation is personal benefit, but the difference comes from that their "selfish" useful productivity contributes to society more than they take (the definition of prosociality), as opposed to being a drain on the economy like other sub-cultures.
>> ^longde:
Immigrants who overstay visas don't do it out a sense of altruism, to help our country. They do it to benefit illegally from the bounty of our society. In that sense, they are very much like welfare cheats.
>> ^chilaxe:
@legacy0100 "All other ethnic groups would have their own ways to solve their problems with the US government... From my Taiwanese roommate, I learned that you can manage to stay in the US past your visa renewal limit..."
Sounds like something of a false symmetry. People from Taiwanese culture who overstay in the US so they can contribute to society doesn't seem on par with other cultures freeloading off of welfare or various methods of fraud to avoid payments into government revenue.

and what bigotry is that? by god, i was just called a knob-gobbler by some cretin who believes that homosexuals are beneath him! what a lout! i'll be sure to explain to him your theories on ethnocentric bias, by golly. as we both know, you're incapable of committing ethnocentric bias -- cultural jack-of-all-trades that you are -- and will not have to worry about being seen as a shitty holier-than-thou hypocrite.

In reply to this comment by GenjiKilpatrick:
Alas, you would be wrong to assume that.

That would be entail - C. fallacy of refutation: straw person

Here, look on this nifty chart. You'll probably need it later on.

But again, what does any of this have to do with your bigotry?
[Which you clearly understand and accept.]

In reply to this comment by solecist:
says the guy who just called us thick-skulled knob-gobblers. what is a knob-gobbler, genji? am i right in assuming that you've just used a term referencing male homosexuality in a negative manner? sounds like ethnocentric bias to me. i would know, because some pretentious twat just told me all about it.

Not much. But imagine - if we are mainly Americans, who are we supposed to complain about? What countries can we look up at and complain about their oppression and cultural imperialism towards us? We're in a monopolar world. America won - and the crown weighs heavy. That said, I whinge about Australians a lot.

In reply to this comment by smibbo:
let me ask you this dag, here on v9deosift, does anyone bitch about any other country? (teasing MINK excluded) does anyone ever say anything critical or even informational about any other country?

interesting that this site is for english speakers, has overwhelmingly american vids on it but all anyone will criticize is america.

In reply to this comment by dag:
I think there's hypocracy all around. I'm huge consumer of American culture - and yet I never miss a chance to lambast my country for its shortcomings.

At the same time I do get a bit shirty when I hear Australians go off on the father land. Like the culture here is that much different. Australians are just as ugly abroad as Americans. Beer swilling provincial louts in many cases.

Clarkson Kills a Corvette... With a Helicopter

Payback says...

>> ^Bigboomer:

All driving a Corvette proves is Clarkson isn't used to pressing an accelerator pedal and have anything more than a pleasing sound happen. He's obviously a automatic traction-control driver.

Yes. Naturally. Jeremy Clarkson can't drive.
Or maybe it's the fact he's driven just about every car commercially available, and understands what it takes to drive them ?
But no, someone insulted a product from your country, quick throw out an insult! That'll get you respect.

" Quick! Throw out an insult! That'll get you respect! "

If you think a quick insult doesn't get you respect, then how do you explain your respect for the man himself? Or haven't you seen his reviews? The man hates North America, and Americans in particular. There isn't a single thing about the continent he has ever shown any respect for beyond the scenery. I have no respect for him, and will refuse to say otherwise. As a Canadian, I appreciate his wit, but the personality traits he has away from the camera sicken me. He's a racist lout.

I stand by my comment. You hop behind the wheel of something he loves, like one of the Lambos, and stab the accelerator to the floor, on wetted down concrete, OF COURSE YOU'LL MAKE MORE DONUTS THAN KRISPEE KREME!!

ps. Don't say I'm an American just because I disagree with you. Typical xenophobic neanderthal, just like your hero.

"Losing the Race": White Power in the US today

Utmost respect for Jared Taylor.

Just to clarify, he is not a "white nationalist", but rather a race realist.

It's an utter insult to present a gentleman such as himself alongside thuggish Nazis. He has no business with such louts.

No. Fox News has one purpose in existing: to make the National Enquirer look respectable.

Ron Paul Interviewed by Wolf Blitzer

qualm says...

manfromx asks: "Qualm unless you are just making stuff up do you have any real reason to think he's a racist?"

I do. I've already written about it on another of the now countless Ron Paul threads so I'm going to copy/paste to here:

My earlier posts:

****

Ron Paul: "If you have ever been robbed by a black teen-aged male, you know how unbelievably fleet-footed they can be."

"Opinion polls consistently show that only about 5 percent of blacks have sensible political opinions, i.e., support the free market, individual liberty and the end of welfare and affirmative action."

"Politically sensible blacks are outnumbered as decent people... I think we can safely assume that 95 percent of the black males in that city [Washington] are semi-criminal or entirely criminal."

"We don't think a child of 13 should be held responsible as a man of 23. That's true for most people, but black males age 13 who have been raised on the streets and who have joined criminal gangs are as big, strong, tough, scary and culpable as any adult and should be treated as such."

I don't believe his pathetic "blame the employee" excuse. (Where he says these statements aren't his but the words of an employee of the Ron Paul Survival Report.)

(In the following post I explain why I don't believe his explanation.)

Grimm, I don't merely choose not to believe him on a whim. His denial is not believable. Think about it for a minute. The best case scenario is that Ron Paul is telling the truth that he didn't write those words. But THEN it's not even remotely plausible that an employee would write such blatantly racist views as quoted above, which were published in the Ron Paul Survival Report, unless it was clearly understood that such views spoke to the people who were Ron Paul's audience at the time. (Rather damning, I'm afraid.)

And then if this was not the case then such an action by this phantom employee would clearly be the work of a mercenary sort of enemy or rogue infiltrator who was setting out to damage Ron Paul. But Ron Paul doesn't make this claim. Ron Paul says very little. Occam's Razor, man.

The last rather bizarre possibility is that this was just an incident that's equivalent to some lout grabbing the microphone at the radio station. How silly is that? This would collapse the truth that Ron Paul's staunchest support has in fact always come from the extreme right-wing militia, skinhead and neo-Nazi crowd...to the realm of mere coincidence.

No, now that he's a "serious" candidate the time is for backpedalling and denials. Or silence, better yet.

There won't be any Kramer meltdowns, unfortunately. (Certainly not during an ELECTION CAMPAIGN.)

How to Disarm a Gunman

viewer_999 says...

Wow, what a bunch of negative louts. You're doubting that self defense techniques work? You're doubting that these techniques can be adapted on the fly and applied successfully? You're doubting that any given person can have trained combat skill over any other given person? You shouldn't.
