Bertrand Russell - Message To Future Generations (1959)

luxintenebris says...

Yes. Humor is an asset to all peoples. Even the Native Americans had their versions of Noah, Colbert, Kimmel, etc.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heyoka

Russell had a fav quote...

The trouble with the world is that the stupid are cocksure and the intelligent are full of doubt.

BUT this quote is more pertinent regarding today's environment...

The first step in a fascist movement is the combination under an energetic leader of a number of men who possess more than the average share of leisure, brutality, and stupidity. The next step is to fascinate fools and muzzle the intelligent, by emotional excitement on the one hand and terrorism on the other.

Casually Explained: Evolution V - Millennials vs Baby Boomer

This is about the newbs and the pros. Basically, the ones who have enough leisure time and lack of responsibility to sit around and bitch about the game.

The Gen Xers are just gamers. We know that arguing over the game mechanics isn't going to sway the devs.

Play the game, collect your phat loots, don't rush to the level cap, and take some time once in a while to appreciate the open world game design.

Of course the game is unbalanced. But nevermind the campers, griefers and OP players who exploited the glitches, find the side missions you enjoy and equip a sunscreen potion...you'll be glad later that you did.

When's the Right Time for Black People to Protest?

Phooz says...

To add to that; if these athletes really did protest outside of the sporting event I seriously doubt it would get any coverage AT ALL. I HIGHLY doubt that the media would give it any air time!

This doesn't hurt anyone directly... it's not obscene... they're not delaying game time... I just don't see how it can strike up such controversy. I'm sorry you had to think about the plight of people of color in this country on your leisurely game day Sunday?

We need more people of color in our governing body's if you don't want to see someone take a knee during the national anthem.

Let them have their time and raise awareness.

The idea you might go to a game and not have to deal with a crazed Trump fan screaming in your face seems to be a winner.

When your message will be heard is always the wrong time for those that don't want to listen. If you liked the message or the messenger, you would love the method and moment.
Sports has historically often been about politics.

Trump has now given the protest against police brutality the attention, and momentum it deserves....he may have done some good.....accidentally....by opposing it. One more win, he's on a roll.

Malcolm X and Ali Warning About Liberals and Multiculturalis

DuoJet says...

"Malcolm X Warning About Liberals and Multiculturalis "

Malcolm X does nothing of the sort. He warns about "...whites (specifically politicians) who call themselves Liberals". That's a significant departure from Liberalism, and whatever the shit "Liberal" means these days. It's also a departure that won't be clarified on CNN or Fox News.

And he's right; the GOP doesn't suffer any penalty for failing to give a f@#k about the poor, about African Americans, etc. They've taught their constituents to demand this indifference. The Democrats DO suffer a penalty, to a limited degree, and thus that brand of deceitful manipulation is common.

Here's the thing; both parties suck, because their bosses (big donors, corporations, the leisure class) suck.

Pay attention to the man behind the curtain.

sally yates hands senator ted cruz his ass

enoch says...

@harlequinn

i have witnessed many of my more right leaning friends on social media ask a very similar question, but ignore that the attorney general is first, and foremost,an agent of the court.

sally yates did nothing illegal.she simply was upholding a lawful injunction passed down from ninth circuit court federal judge william orrick.(who is a republican, for what it is worth).

what yates DID do was ignore an executive order commanding her to challenge the injunction, which she refused and told her subordinates to do the same.which is considered gross insubordination, and the reason she was fired, but she had every right and legal cover to ignore that EO.

the DOJ,and subsequently the attorney general, are not their for the presidents leisure.they are part of the judiciary branch, which is separate from the executive.though every president has replaced the current attorney general with one that most aligns with their politics.

the fact that so many diehard rightwingers see what yates did as anti-patriotic is a stance that i find very disturbing.that somehow by disobeying the president, she crossed some imaginary line, and therefore should be punished for her disobedience.

which she was! she was fired.

but to imply that disobeying an executive order is tantamount to treason, goes against the very ideology of our constitutional republic.the president is not KING.he does not wield absolute power.

and to pretend what yates did as illegal, and treasonous, for disobeying the president.... is fascism 101.

Corporate Media Goes ALL OUT To Hide Clinton WikiLeaks

Drachen_Jager says...

So... here's my take on the election.

The US is a car. Most people are unhappy with the direction the car is taking them, because it's been going that way for decades and they don't see any improvement, if anything things are getting worse. Now, the drivers have been by and large the same for the past 30 years or so, different name, same direction, some take shortcuts, some take a leisurely route, but the overall direction has remained the same.

This election cycle people look at Hillary and think (rightly) she's NOT going to take us in a better direction. So many of them choose Trump, because he's at least going to turn the car, maybe even take it back the way the country came (that's what he says). He points to the right and says, "Let's go that way!" And many people agree, without even looking in the direction he points because they figure any change is better than no change. Meanwhile, the majority takes a more measured approach, they actually LOOK where he's pointing and see they're at the edge of a cliff and he wants to drive off.

Who are you going to vote for?

1 Scientifically Proven Thing Actually Makes People Happier

eric3579 says...

There are actually a couple of other happiness-increasing technique that is somewhat non-intuitive, is shown to increase happiness in repeated studies, and is fairly easy to implement and difficult to reverse: Having a dog or cat.

It appears that being needed by the animal makes the human feel as if they have intrinsic value which...I mean it would be nice if we had that without pets but, there it is. If you want the best bang for your buck, I would suggest a small dog or cat from the pound as it will eat significantly less food than a bigger animal.

Another life change that actually effectively increases long-term happiness on average is marriage. This seemed a little too hairy for this video though. Also, DEFINITELY NOT DOSE-DEPENDENT. One spouse...better for happiness. Two spouses USUALLY NOT.

So there you go...get a pet, get hitched, and shorten your commute. You need to get home anyway, so you can feed your dog!

Why Seasons Make No Sense

poolcleaner says...

Aside from annexing your lands and turning them into leisure worlds for retired Legionnaires, they also brought central heating, exotic goods, plumbing, roads, law, order, popular clothing styles -- but only for the wealthy -- and at the cost of maybe raping your children to teach your village a lesson to obey Roman rule.

Generations later hardly anyone even remembers and you're now part of the empire. And when you're invaded by other "barbarians" your ancestors will protect their Roman culture as if it were always theirs to enjoy. Fight the other barbarians for us, you barbarian!!

You almost get the feeling they defined the entire future of western civilization. Every nasty bit; confusingly superior customs that are required otherwise you become a slave -- and maybe you'll become a slave anyway, even if you follow the rules. After all, once a bitch, always a bitch and so an entire legion slowly blots out your cultural and genetic existence.

Yay, Roman Empire!

5 ways you are already a socialist

TheFreak says...

I've never understood how any soldier could rail against socialism. The US military is one of the most socialist institutions in the world. Housing, medical, leisure activities...everything...all payed for and run by the military for soldiers.
If you're in the military you're living in a socialist society. Yet the majority of soldiers I served with were conservatives who railed against liberalism.

Cop Kills Mexican For Slowly Shuffling In His Direction

lucky760 says...

Under those circumstances, yes!

Considering that just walking backwards under no duress on the edge of a busy freeway could be tricky, doing so while overflowing with adrenaline and a potential threat continuing to advance on you... yeah, it's not like taking a nice leisurely stroll.

The most important question to answer your suggested solutions is: what happens next?

The problem is there's no answer to the question because no one knows what might or might not happen. Again, cops can't put themselves into a position where they have no idea what their next move might be because they're yielding to the potential threat in front of them and handing them the power to control the situation.

Oh man. you're putting me on the spot with that question. I traded 1/2 ownership of a 128mac for my brother's old apple 2 and a shoe box of floppy's. I didn't go through 1/2 of them before I got kicked out of the house and he took it all back. I remember a few text games...hitchhikers guide among them. I think also defender, Montezuma's revenge sounds familiar, Wolfenstien, Beyond Wolfenstien, Cannonball Blitz, Centipede, choplifter, crystal castles, frogger, galaxian, joust, kung fu master, leisure suit larry in the land of the lounge lizards, lode runner, missile defense, moon patrol, qix, tapper, ultima (maybe ultima 2), and zork. That's all I recognize from the list.
