It should come as no surprise that Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was a Republican. In that era, almost all black Americans were Republicans. Why? From its founding in 1854 as the anti-slavery party until today, the Republican Party has championed freedom and civil rights for blacks. Last year I was using famous speeches to teach English here in Thailand. One that I chose was JFK's "We Choose to go to the Moon" speech, so I remember that some of the words that followed the titular ones were "we choose to go to the moon in this decade".

I guess what I'm saying is, JFK couldn't have been 100% certain that whoever his predecessor would be would actually keep up that torch, but it was still a worthy goal and a worthy speech. Maybe (probably) Obama's speech mentioning going to Mars by the 2030's won't have that sort of impact, but it's a start and better than nothing.

After all, I think that we'd like to look back and give JFK more credit for getting us to the moon than "tricky Dick" Nixon, who ended up being the actual sitting president when we did get to the moon. And within the decade, just as JFK had said!
