Where are the cops when you need one?

Mordhaus says...

If you break it down to just intentional homicide per 100,000 population, it averages out to 3.8 deaths for the US and 1 for the UK based on recent stats.

Some other countries for comparison:

Russia - 9.0
Jamaica - 39.3
India - 3.5
Canada - 1.4 (Probably died from starvation apologizing to one another)
China - 0.8 (Of course, this is just what they admit happening)
Norway - 2.2

Yes, that article was pretty silly, repeatedly quoting the study claiming the UK has the most violence based on the fact that they consider an argument a violent crime even when there's been no injury, but compare it to other countries where no crime is reported unless there's hospitalization. Just note, in the year studied, the UK had a total of 921 murders, compared to 14,831 in the US that year...but yeah, the UK is the more violent country, far more violent than the US or South Africa.

American Loving Redneck Has Some Thoughts On Racism

Eklek says...

Related quote by writer Russell Banks:

"After living in Jamaica and writing The Book of Jamaica, I accepted that I was obliged, for example, to have African American friends. I was obliged to address deliberately the overlapping social and racial contexts of my life. I'm a white man in a white-dominated, racialized society; therefore, if I want to I can live my whole life in a racial fantasy. Most white Americans do just that. Because we can. In a color-defined society we are invited to think that white is not a color. We are invited to fantasize and we act accordingly."

Malcolm Gladwell - Why do some succeed where others fail?

He's walking on the eggshells of perception speaking on race, thought he stuttered through an explanation well..

What he mentioned about the Brits schooling the freed slaves in Jamaica? This would explain perhaps the reason reggae is superior to rap and hip-hop in so many ways? Much more political, insightful, hopeful and tuneful. Oh, and kinder, gentler rage...

My personal 5-yr-plan for expatriation began yesterday. If I have to live in any country, I have 3 criteria:

Must be an active volcano within 20 miles and surrounded by ocean
Must be able to dive for shellfish and angle for salt-water fishes from the shore
Tourism economy with the only Americans there visitors or fellow expatriates with the bulk of tourists coming from Europe and other.

I'm shooting for the south-eastern Windward isles, where I can with an EU passport, travel freely to Cuba. Not to mention Jamaica and South America.

It's not so much the fucked government, they're fucked everywhere. It's all about quality of life-Good, fresh, UNTAINTED food, great music, and NO FUCKING AMERICANS!

I used to love my country before the machine started breeding idiots, now all that's left here are ineffectual robots who talk a lot, saying nothing and doing less. As far as I'm concerned, y'all can have this motherfucker....Oh, and I'm gonna join the Freemasons when I get there as well, 'cause Freemasonry KICKS ASS!

Drunk Icelandair passengers being taped to seat

mintbbb says...

YT description continues:

'Arthorsson, who is a civil engineer who works in Trinidad and Tobago had visited his family in the Icelandic capital but was returning home to be with his fiancée on the Caribbean island.
After police removed him from the flight he was taken to Jamaica Hospital where he was treated for alcohol poisoning and luckily for him, Federal authorities declined to prosecute the case.
It was while aboard the New York-bound flight that Arthorsson was duct-taped to his seat by fellow passengers after attacking one woman, spitting on other passengers and screaming the plane was going to crash.
A friend of one of the observing passengers, Andy Ellwood of New York, posted a picture of the subdued flyer to his Tumblr with an account of the incident.
The 'passenger drank all of his duty free liquor on the flight from Iceland to JFK yesterday,' Ellwood wrote.'

Bill Moyers: Living Under the Gun

@jimnms - link for your last para?
Meanwhile, I think you're missing the point: http://krugman.blogs.nytimes.com/2012/07/22/america-is-a-violent-coun
try/
Over to you and your next move: the 'data must be wrong' argument.

Here's your source, and it didn't come out of my ass like Bill's shit.

What point I'm missing? Your linked article doesn't mention guns anywhere, it shows that America is more violent than other advanced countries, which is even more of reason to carry a gun for self defense. I think you're the one missing the point.

Ninety percent of violent crimes are committed by persons not carrying handguns. This is one reason why the mere brandishing of a gun by a potential victim of violence often is a sufficient response to a would-be attacker. In most cases where a gun is used in self-defense, it is not fired. Can the average citizen be trusted to judge accurately when he or she is in jeopardy?...

A nationwide study by Don Kates, the constitutional lawyer and criminologist, found that only 2 percent of civilian shootings involved an innocent person mistakenly identified as a criminal. The 'error rate' for the police, however, was 11 percent, more than five times as high."
[source]

As for the U.S. vs other countries in gun homicides, the U.S. isn't #1:
Of course, it is not surprising that where there are more guns, there tends to be more gun-related deaths, but northern Latin America (Brazil in particular) breaks from this trend in a major way. The area has a massive homicide by firearm rate, with some of the lowest rates of gun ownership in the world and the highest homicides by firearm count...

Brazil, Columbia, Venezuela and Ecuador combine for more homicides by firearm than Mexico, the United States, South Africa, the Philippines, Honduras, Guatemala, India, El Salvador, Dominican Republic, Bangladesh, Argentina and Jamaica put together. That is every other country with over 1,000 homicides by firearm. You would imagine that gun control would be very lax in the area, but as the top chart here illustrates, that is not the case. Brazil, for example, has roughly 255 million fewer guns (and about 115 million fewer people) than the United States and a much more strict and effective set of firearm regulations. So, while it is true that where there are guns, there is gun violence, that is clearly not the only determining factor.

I wonder if that actually works over there. I think I can assume not a lot may read or write, so you can not put it down. You either have a great memory or you stop for directions an awful lot.

She's from Jamaica, not sub-Saharan Africa, so your assumption of mass illiteracy would be incorrect.

Your assuming my assumptions are wrong without knowing for certain yourself, give me statistics of her region not some popycock national 80+ literacy rate bullshit.
