Indeed you're correct that gregorian chant is monophonic, so, strictly speaking, this isn't gregorian chant. However, Biebl most certainly used gregorian chant as an inspiration for the piece. The first 30 seconds or so are gregorian chant, and so are the solos. Thanks for bringing music theory into this with the great comment.

not sure about the 'gregorian chant' tag, though... this was a polyphonic performance - and if i'm remembering correctly, gregorian chant is/was monophonic

anyway, nice sift

The Melvins, "DIES IRAEA" (The Shining intro)

dystopianfuturetoday says...

The Dies Irae is a very old and famous melody, dating back to the days of Gregorian Chant, some 8 centuries ago. It was the part of the Roman Catholic Mass dealing with death and judgment day. The melody is still used commonly as thematic material in *darker pieces of music. It's most famous setting was in a orchestral piece called Symphonie Fantasique by Hector Berlioz.

Genesis Revisited: A Scientific Creation Story

demon_ix says...

"Thou shalt not evolve into new species". Brilliant!

If the retard who thought up this video managed to say every single scientific phenomenon is actually "God did it!", why not say "Yea, evolution is real, but it's God that makes it happen!".

If you're going to say "The first day wasn't actually a day (since there was no sun yet, or time for that matter), so when we say 4004 BC we actually mean billions of years ago, but we call the first few billions one day", why the f*ck would you waste time arguing about if the world is 6000 years old?!? Just agree that according the the bloody Gregorian calendar, it really was billions of years ago, it's just that you choose to count time in a different way! Then devise your own calendar according to which billions of years can be contained in one day, and presto! Your own creationist timeline!

WHY WOULD GOD PLACE FOSSILS AROUND? JUST TO MESS WITH YOUR F*CKING MIND?!?!?
I never understood how the argument that "Dinosaurs couldn't exist because they're not mentioned in the Bible" isn't immediately contradicted by the fact that the fossils aren't mentioned in the Bible either...

"Declaring that micro evolution was permitted, but not macro evolution". Where do you come up with this bullshit?

"This created confusion in the valley of the shadow of doubt, so God created Theologians to sort it all out". I give up. Say whatever you want. I'm going to do some math puzzles to try and restore some of the IQ I lost while watching this video...

OK! After watching the whole thing, I will still keep this comment intact as a tribute to every theological discussion I've ever had with a person expressing the exact views this video is a parody of.
This deserves to be in the parody channel, but I'll leave it as is to make others go through the same mental frustration I went through

DOOMSDAY 2012: End of Days - Part 1 of 2

videosiftbannedme says...

I always laugh at stuff like this because didn't we lose like 8 days after we switched from the Julian to Gregorian calendars? Watch, Dec. 21 is gonna hit, every thing will be fine, then 8 days later the shit actually hits the fan. I'm gonna LAAAAUUGH...

Regardless, all the planets represent less than .02 percent of the mass of our solar system. So if they all lined up on one side of the sun, it would wobble maybe a few hundred kilometers. This is all horseshit.

Kermit the Frog - Hurt

pho3n1x says...

I was gonna jump all over the comment that Cash wrote this song, but apparently it's already been done, and is an old comment. but just for clarification:

Nine Inch Nails (Trent Reznor) written in 1994. Released on Downward Spiral.
Johnny Cash covered in 2002. Released on American IV: The Man Comes Around.

Reznor is most definitely the author of this song, and Cash is not the first to cover it either.

Tori Amos frequently sang three or four lines of the song as an introduction to other songs during her Dew Drop Inn tour in 1996, most frequently "Caught a Lite Sneeze", and then again in 1998, as an improvisational bridge.
Breaking Benjamin
Sheryl Crow covered the Cash version on the television special Tribute to Johnny Cash.
Fightstar
Matthew Good, acoustic tour 2006.
Gregorian arranged the lyrics into a medieval Gregorian chant.
Kermit the Frog is featured in an unauthorized parody called "Sad Kermit".
Aaron Lewis of Staind covered the song during his 2007 Have Guitar, Will Travel solo acoustic tour.
Luna Amara
Jeff Martin
Montezuma's Revenge
Placebo, at the House of Blues in California in 2003.
Damien Rice, by inserting lyrics from the song into his live performances.
Underoath played it acoustic live
Sevendust did a cover as a tribute to Johnny Cash.
Howard Stern had his own version for his show, called "Private Hurt". He played the song while mixing in sound clips from his film Private Parts.
Westside Connection sampled the main riff for their song "The Gangsta The Killa and The Dope Dealer".
