yeah,my anarchy video wont get many votes.
i dont expect it to.
most of the dissenters, dissidents and agitators have left the sift.
so the normals will watch it and two things will happen.
1.it will make them angry, but they wont comment because that would be,you know, risking a confrontation or *gasp* conflict.
2.they will take it personally and still not comment for the very same reasons as above.

dont want to be viewed as a 'non-conformist" or be seen as "different".
dont make waves.
sit down.
shut up.
behave.

which is exactly the mentality the dude in my video is railing against.
probably why i found it so entertaining.
i do admire that mans passion.

"Stupidity of American Voter," critical to passing Obamacare

VoodooV says...

You're just the king of the strawmen and trying to change the subject aren't you?

I never referred to Trance's video. That's not the issue. Once again (since you keep forgetting...deliberately?) the issue is the abuse of the voting system.

I haven't watched the video, nor have I voted on it. Also irrelevant to your censorship argument since even flagged videos are still viewable here. Regardless of how you spin it. There is no censorship and by extension (since you appear to have not understood my argument) freedom of speech on a private website. If the Owner of the site says you're out, you're out. You exist here on the owner's whim. You of all people should understand that.

So quit trying to derail...or gasp..we may have to start questioning your...integrity.

What a pleasant correspondence. /s

And no one is saying "free speech" is a presiding factor here. In any event, I wasn't talking about "Trance" being right wing, I was bringing up a longer, more insidious, problem on this site. In fact, that point was for people who've been here much longer than you have.

And, yes, trying to get this video flagged is definitely censorship. You just don't like the content of the video. Admit it.

Genius Redneck Couch Moving

rancor says...

"Ah TOLD yew!"

EDIT: I literally gasped out loud when I realized they weren't trying to use the sandbagged lines to somehow retard the descent of the couch in a straight-down descent (which obviously would have failed).

buzzfeed women drinking whiskey for he first time

lv_hunter says...

eh, its buzzfeed. Most likely their target audience are white american youths, who would know JD.

I had a friend who hanging out at someones house. they were passing around a sipping scotch, i don't know what brand, but it was supposedly expensive and could peel paint with a splash it was so strong. They ran out of sipping glasses, so they poured his in a normal shot glass. He didn't know better and shot the thing in front of them all. They all gasped and said "NO!! DON'T SHOT IT!" lol he said it was the most excruciating sensation ever had drinking something. everyone had a good laugh after it.

ChaosEngine said:

Too sweet for my taste.

And @Sagemind, you couldn't be further from the truth. If getting drunk is your aim, whiskey is one of the most expensive ways of doing that.

As for the video, I'm torn. On one hand, whiskey! and women! I like those things.

On the other hand.... ugh buzzfeed. fuck those guys.

edit: and I've just watched it... sorry @lv_hunter, but that was terrible.
They couldn't have tried more than just JD? No Scotch single malts? No Irish blends?

Jon Stewart Goes After Fox in Ferguson Monologue

VoodooV says...

...which further shows the hypocrisy of @lantern53

We see it all the time, he says he knows what a strawman is, what an anecdote is, yet as others have called him out on, He spouts strawmans, he spouts anecdotes, he does it consistently.

He whines about personal responsibility, but is the first one to cry foul, to claim victimhood, to pretend that he so oppressed. He's STILL whining about something I teased him about MONTHS ago. And news flash Lantern, I never did directly call you a homosexual (not the derogatory term "homo") I called you out on your strange "fantasies" (your word, not mine) that you yourself described regarding homosexuals. If you want to internalize that as an insult or an accusation, that's your problem, not mine. And besides, even if I did directly call you a homosexual and you're not, that's not an insult, it may be an incorrect statement, but it's not an insult.

That's your baggage, not mine.

Then there's the hypocrisy of claiming to care so much about manners, then saying that violence would be a good way to make someone have good manners. Do you fucking listen to yourself? The civilized world generally considers violence of ANY kind to be BAD manners...not good. Again, such a hypocrite. The fact that you seem to think differently is rather appalling.

and then his hypocrisy about name calling, just now he claimed that because someone "namecalled" him that he lost the argument, but you really don't have to look through his comment history very hard to find him being quite liberal <gasp!> with the name calling, often being the one instigating it with many ad hominem attacks. Enoch has already called you out about how you spit out the word "leftist" like it's a dirty word. news flash, people don't like being demonized. We may think you're an idiot, but we don't think you're evil, or less than human like you seem to think of us.

I know what you're thinking, "wah! but liberals do it too!!" Sure they do. But again, no one ever claimed that the left was perfect (that would be another strawman). we just claim that our ideas are better than yours and can usually back it up...big difference. And again, as someone who claims liberals are so bad and sub-human, wouldn't you want to NOT act like the bad, filthy liberals? So in either case, the "but they do it too" excuse just never holds any water.

Again, going back to what someone else asked and you never answered. What exactly is your goal in these threads? Again, you look at lantern's comment history and it's just nothing but negative negative derogatory posts. never building anyone up, but always tearing someone down. Yeah, you're right, posting videos is not a requirement to be here. But if all you do IS make comments, then you better fucking believe we're going to judge you on them.

Sea of Jellyfish in Denmark

Sagemind says...

I had to swim through Jellyfish like this in Mexico... They completely surrended us while we were out snorkeling against some cliffs, our only escape was to take a deep breath, and dive down under them and swim as hard as we could, then come up in the middle of them fast and dive again, so our wake would push them away. They were attracted to the movement so we had to come up fast, gasp, and dive again, we made it past them after six or seven dives and quite a few stings.

Last Week Tonight with John Oliver: Prison (HBO)

Januari says...

When your country starts incarcerating its citizens at an enormous rate, unprecedented in the world, dwarfing that of a country like China, yeah i can't imagine where those comparisons would come from.

I want a number... You feel so strongly about this give me a god damn number... how many innocent people should be executed to sate your desire for rapid executions?... How many each yer?... 5? 10? 20?... Of course we'll never really know will we.

Maybe you should actually watch the video... or i don't know spend 10 minutes on google... If your concerned about prisoners getting free health care or *gasp* free food!!!! Well your in fucking luck!... because increasingly they aren't getting any of either... Shelter???? don't count on it...

http://www.dallasnews.com/news/columnists/jacquielynn-floyd/20140424-the-crime-of-un-airconditioned-texas-prisons.ece

WTF am i wasting my time discussing this with a guy advocating a police state and as far as i can tell medieval era punishments...

Do you actually work for Geo Group?... be honest you do don't ya.

What's really terrifying is how often people make silly Nazi analogies on the internet.

Our prison system is broken but not because of how it treats prisoners. It's broken because it's not acting as an effective deterrent. The whole point of prison (or any other punishment) is to deter people from committing crimes. Our current prison system isn't accomplishing that.

If we replaced prison with immediate execution (no more sitting on death row for years), crime rates would probably go down. If we increased surveillance and enforcement, crime rates would probably go down. If we made prison nicer and tried to rehabilitate instead of punish criminals, would crime rates go down? Good question. If I knew that prison would be a safe and comfortable experience, I'd definitely be more inclined to break the law. If my current living conditions were bad enough, I might even be inclined to break the law just to gain the benefits of such a prison. Free food, free shelter, free healthcare. Not a bad deal if you don't have to worry about being beaten, raped or killed. I'd love to see what would happen if all the prisons in the U.S. were as posh as the Halden Prison in Norway.

Last Week Tonight with John Oliver: Wealth Gap

VoodooV says...

wow, you've been brainwashed. how's that "soon to have" mentality working out for you? How much in capital gains tax did you pay last year? Let me guess...none.

you are the poster child for voting against your own interests.

nice strawman. I don't see a lot of people sitting around, I see people trying to change things. and *gasp* making it part of the national conversation is part of that.

the right loves to rail against the European mentality of people being born into wealth, but that's exactly what we are creating. Romney - born into wealth. The Bush family - born into wealth. maybe a long time ago, someone in their family did work hard to get where they are, or in all likelyhood, they got lucky, they were in the right place, right time. From then on, it's just a game of maintaining that wealth. which buys you politicians to help you keep that wealth.

You probably can't hear me, probably still planning out what you're going to do with your lottery winnings.

I don't get it if you want to be better off then go figure out a way and drive toward it. Quit bitching about " those rich bastards".

I suppose I could just watch TV all night and complain like everybody else with and have my hand out for some government cheese or for the government to strip the rich of its earnings and hand out more cheese.

I want to be better off and working toward making it better. Its a long road but I believe I will get there.

Today I made a $1000 bucks and last month I made 38% on my money.
I also buy and sell motorcycles for some extra spending cash. I'm always trying to better myself financially.

My dad lost everything he had when he was in his late 30's in 10 years he had it back. He is retired and living well. I wouldn't call him rich but his money will outlast him. He did it, a high school educated man.

America is still the best country You can make you own mark. It's up to you and you alone.

Sarah Palin argues it's time to impeach Obama

VoodooV says...

yeah I had to google her, which that alone is a point again Lantern's argument. Just based on wikipedia, it sounds like her biggest crime is that she's a black woman in Texas. Apparently her staff has a high turnover rate, and that she's apparently *gasp* "mean". but I'm sure that wouldn't be criticized if she was a white male conservative.

Looks like she also had the audacity to ask the Dept of Justice to investigate whether the Tea Party was intimidating black and hispanics from voting.

And apparently she passed a safety ordinance requiring parents keep guns away from kids,

<sarcasm> that bitch </sarcasm>

Iraq Explained -- ISIS, Syria and War

scheherazade says...

Before the U.S. invasion, Iraq had an integrated society, with different religions inter-marrying, and different religions working in government.
After the U.S. took over, people were chosen for state work according to religious quota (something new to iraq), and religion became a 'big deal' in regards to putting food on the table.
General dislikes turned into conflicts.

The "Shia v Sunni" thing is more hyperbole for western audiences, than it is a matter of recent history.
Saddam mostly oppressed areas rife with insurgent groups. Conflict festers and spreads. People die, their families/friends become militant, then they die, and their families/friends become militant, etc, etc, etc. Families/friends live near each other, so it spreads geographically. Eventually you find cities or regions that have managed to upturn.
Like any city/region, similar people tend to live together. So you in effect have groups/cultures vs government.
Hence why the internal conflict was by city/region (just like it is/was in Syria), and why it had a cultural flavor.
Granted, there is always some backlash that spills into a community at large, when a portion of it is identified as a 'problem'. Point is, there was not some eugenic ethnic/religious conflict going on.

The real 'oppression by religion' is happening today.
Neighborhoods have become mono-religious. Minorities have left their neighborhoods and fled to regions that are mostly 'of their own kind' - because nobody wants to stick around to see if they become the next target.

Best thing that can happen now is what happened to Syria after WW2 : Some other power steps in, chops up the country into smaller pieces, and populates each piece with a particular culture (eg. Syria was taken by Britain and France, split up, and became Syria + Lebanon + Jordan - granted the post ww2 split of Syria had more to do with the the last gasps of colonialism, and less to do with stabilization. 'Fun' note : It's the Syrian expulsion the French colonial rulers in the 1970's, and the subsequent French 'black eye', that set the tone for why France is so happy to support whoever wants to overthrow the Syrian government.).

How we give out moderating powers to Sifters (Controversy Talk Post)

robv says...

This is an excellent post in my opinion. I agree with what dag says. I used to frequent this site multiple times a day, enjoying videos while also putting up with favoritism and sanctimonious commenters. Content (videos and comments) from "popular" sifters was seemingly favored. After I received my bronze star (a small rank in comparison to most), my mindset was essentially... "yep I did it". And even though to some that may have been a minor achievement, for me and I think many other casual sifters it was a pain in the ass. And once I received my star the thought of trying for the next rank was unrealistic. Now I only occasionally stop by to check out the top sifts. Other sites like Reddit (*gasp*) don't have these preconditions and I think as a result are more welcoming. Reducing the contribution requirement to be a little more inviting may be a good idea.

Also, one power that always rubbed me the wrong way was that some established video site embeds were only available to higher ranked sifters. That my friends is favoritism. I can't post what I feel is a quality video but other higher ranked sifters can. Who really suffers at that point is the site as a whole - missing out on content that may bring in new visitors and submitters.

Lioness jumps off a cliff to catch an antelope in mid-air

robbersdog49 says...

Everyone knows this, but it's different when it's happening right in front of you and taking you completely by surprise. I've seen a lion kill a zebra, right in front of our vehicle as close as these guys are to the action and it's completely different seeing it in the flesh as it is watching it in a video.

You can see the fear in the struggling prey. You can hear it gasping for breath and struggling to cry out. You can feel the power of the lioness. You can see the blood pumping out of the prey into the lion's mouth and running down it's side. Flesh being ripped from the prey while it's still panting its last.

It's a harrowing experience. Whether you know that they eat meat or not, if you're not moved watching this happen just feet from you then there's something wrong with you. It's a wild, exciting, horrible, awesome thing to see. Just because it's completely natural and normal for the lion doesn't mean that someone seeing it for the first time should feel comfortable watching it. It's not a comfortable thing to see.

Watching a cat catch a mouse is one thing, but lions are working on a human scale. It's doing what it could do to you. Seeing it for real is a massive adrenaline rush because your body is well aware that it shouldn't be that close to what's happening, even if your mind can overrule it, you still get the rush.

Anyone going on safari knows that lions eat other animals, it's one of the things people really want to see. When we saw it there was one young lady with us who couldn't watch because it upset her too much, and it's not because she was a wuss, it just really was upsetting to see. Doesn't mean she thought the lion shouldn't be doing it, it's not a moral judgement in the slightest, she just didn't want to watch an animal die like that.

The poster is totally correct. We are not in it for video promotion at all.

Plus, I may be revealing too much, but dag and I have had secret meetings every fortnight for the past 8 years planning how to continue scamming even more suckers into posting quality content they aren't associated with and scamming even more millions of people into watching them, all so once every year or two someone will pay a mite's ransom for the scam of 24 hours on the front page.
