Who Needs Wingsuits?

newtboy says...

No, sorry, ditching meat and dairy didn't cure his arthritis. It's likely that swimming and training to freedive relieved his symptoms by effectively oxygenating his blood more efficiently and to higher levels. There is no cure for arthritis.

Free diving requires excessively high iron levels in your blood, which is exceptionally difficult to achieve on a vegetarian or vegan diet. That's why very few top ranked freedivers (or other top ranked athletes) are vegan instead of all of them.

True, vegetables don't have cholesterol, but poly and monounsaturated fats they do contain can still raise human cholesterol levels when over consumed. It's just not as simple as plant good, meat bad.

No clue where you get this 20% boost of O2 use efficiency claim....have any references or even explanations? It contradicts everything I find that shows only around 1/2 the iron found in those few vegetables that contain iron is useable by the body unlike iron found in dark and red meats.

Interesting backstory to this diver Stig Pryds - like many other people , he cured his arthritis by ditching meat and dairy.

He's supposed to be in a wheelchair and on medication.

He started swimming as therapy for his arthritis too, and turns out he's the worlds best freediver......which no doubt makes him talented, but when you think about how not eating cholesterol (only in meat/dairy/eggs/fish) will clean out your arteries, it's no wonder his blood is able to stay oxygenated for longer periods. Along with eating greens, he'll be around 20% more efficient at utilizing oxygen and creating energy.

I wonder if he'll be in the upcoming James Cameron's Game Changers documentary.

AMA - a short film by Julie Gautier

scheherazade says...

I believe only the ascent is slow mo (around 5 min mark).

The rest just looks slow because it's under water and she's freediving (only slow movement to save air). The reflections give away the timing.

I can't hold my breath in slow motion.

Very nice though.

You will never be a world class freediver with that attitude.

I'll never understand the point of free climbing that sort of height for fun as so many things can go wrong (loose/crumbling rock, slip, bird, wind, cramp, whatever) and you've got no backup if you lose your grip. Climbing with a rope, sure, I see the fun and challenge in that, but not using any safety equipment just seems silly.

Did that guy just hold his breath for the entire duration of this video or was there some clever cut scenes and stuff to make the video longer than the actual event?
Because 4 minutes of that after running along the bottom at the beginning and then essentially rock climbing back up....that's unbelievably impressive.
This video draws forth a at least two phobias just watching it, dunno what I'd do if something unexpectedly brushed up against me on my way down.

No. The movie's a bit disingenuous--it's very nice piece of art, but it's just a movie.

From the guy:

"hello everyone, thanks again for all your comments...

To clarify: this movie is A FICTION AND AN ARTISTIC PROJECT. I don't claim to have reached the bottom of the hole (202m) without rope and fins, as the world record in no-fins discipline is 95m..
We made this movie to show another approach in freediving videos.
We wanted to express the strenght of the elements water-earth-air and the sensations of freedom, harmony, exploration

Shot with a canon 5D mark II
Music: you make me feel - ARCHIVE"

On the other hand, this guy's record dive *did* take 3:31, so he is capable of some feats.

Your rank has dropped by 1. You are now ranked #1341. User freediver is now ahead of you. You can do better than freediver, can't you? You're only 0 votes away from getting back in front of freediver.

The Deepest Pool in the World

9453 says...

^ I'd like to see a new Olympic event: the vertical breaststroke.

Not an olympic event, but the freediving event Constant Ballast No Fins is one of the most compelling events I've ever witnessed. Not much a spectator sport, but doing safety for the athletes is a good vantage to watch the event from. It's generally done in the ocean, but a pool like this is a good place to train for such an event.

Self-link ban policy (Sift Talk Post)

MarineGunrock says...

It sure is. But so is contacting the admins and repenting, which, for some strange reason, is already the policy that's worked fine.

Here's where I'm coming from:
say I was to shooting at things in a field, but I didn't see the farmer beyond my target because I was being irresponsible, and I kill him. Should I not go to jail for what I've done? I think yes. Whether it was intentional or not, the rules were broken, and so the punishment is dealt.

Again, if they really want to be here (chances are they don't) they can easily get their account unbanned without requiring members to have to check in on them to see if they have bothered to comment.

I present to you Exhibit A: Freediver - Self-linked, repented and had account unbanned, only to never return.
