Bernie Sanders shows support for aims of Jeremy Corbyn

dannym3141 says...

So this is relevant because of a recent surge in support for "radical left" (i.e. democratic socialist, centre-left) Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn who has had a huge surge in popularity in recent weeks in a general election campaign he was expected to catastrophically lose by all mainstream sources.

Since winning two Labour party leadership elections in 2015, voted in by historic margins by ordinary members having their say for the first time, he has faced hostile criticism from all mainstream media sources and most politicians including his own party.

The grass roots, which helped drive his earlier victories, appears to be doing the same thing for him in this general election campaign. The grass roots involvement has included youth musicians, artists and activists coming together from multiple campaigns (Save The NHS, WASPI, most unions, including teachers, fire, police and transport, and far too many other interest groups to mention, including multiple disability campaigners). As well as individuals, parents, elderly, and Momentum - a group formed in the afterglow of his leadership win.

On the other hand, Theresa May's and the Tory party's campaign has gone from disaster to disaster. After claiming to be the party of economic security, they released an entirely uncosted manifesto (Labour's was fully costed, other party's included some costings). After trying to make it a match of personalities, she has gone from robotic gaffe to robotic gaffe, dodging questions whilst Corbyn's easy charm and honesty has gone quite a way to show those weaknesses up. She has claimed to be stable and strong, and the best hand to negotiate Brexit, but performed u-turn after u-turn and is now avoiding all but mandatory press contact because her and her brand have become toxic, thanks to things like the "Dementia Tax" and a promise to vote again on allowing barbaric fox hunting. She has been caught out, and regardless of the results of the general election, Theresa May is finished as Conservative leader. Potentially, the back of austerity has been broken and exposed. A movement has been started and even if the Tory's win, watch out for a mass people power'd intervention over their heinous plans.

God i could go on, this has been amazing to watch. Obviously i'm biased towards Labour, and whilst a centre-right opponent might describe things differently, the facts are the same.

Significant things are happening in the UK right now, not wholly dissimilar from the rise of Sanders, only this time it's for the actual prime minister position - Corbyn managed to outmaneuver the corruption of his party. If the election was 2 weeks longer i would predict a huge Labour landslide. After being so ridiculed by a hostile media for so long, election bias rules have forced the press into giving Corbyn a fair hearing and the more people see, the more they appear to like. The question is, have people already cast their vote by post? Will people turn up and vote? A big turnout is expected to favour Labour. A strong youth turnout will be hugely beneficial to Labour.

Guns with History

I respect your position and defence of it. I must say though that on inspection, the quoted reasoning can and therefore probably has been used in the past to condone slavery in America, and other awful stuff.

The problem with it is that you state your dedication to something regardless of the morality of it.

I'm trying to think of other things that have used the same reasoning. Sexism, bullfighting, fox hunting, anti-semitism, age old wars like the irish feud (until common sense prevailed)?

It really isn't a great way to set out your stall. There are so many things that we used to think were ok that needed to change, and the world is a better place because we didn't follow that "it's tradition" ethos.

Gun Control in the UK

Yossarian says...

Trust me there is no appetite whatsoever in the UK for looser gun control.

The fox hunting ban had nothing to do with guns or liberty and everything to do with a bunch of rich country gents wanting to tear apart foxes with dogs. The rest of the country wasn't so sure this was something worth marching about.

And nobody was denying Tony Martin the right to defend his home, although some did think that him shooting the burglar in the back with a shotgun might have been a tad overzealous.

Gun Control in the UK

robbersdog49 says...

What a load of bias rubbish. Very selective quoting. The ban on fox hunting was nothing to do with human rights, but rather animal cruelty. Foxes can still be hunted, with a gun of all things. You're just not allowed to let your dogs maul them to death because that's cruel. So what they're apparently campaigning against is a load of rubbish, hunting with guns is still legal.

Oh, and so is pistol shooting - you just have to keep your gun at a gun club. The only thing that's illegal is keeping your gun at home.

As for Tony Martin, he's a nutjob. Tony Martin had his gun license revoked in 1994 because he shot at someone who was stealing his apples. Ok, so the guy was on his land and stealing fruit, but it's OK to shoot them? No. No it's not.

There are a lot of inconsistencies in his story of the incident. He claimed to have shot from the stairs having been woken by the break in. He didn't, he was shown to have shot from a downstairs doorway. He was lying in wait for them and ambushed them. He shot the kid that broke in in the back as he was trying to escape.

I'm pretty sure in America the feeling is just that the kid had it coming, he shouldn't have been there. I don't buy into that at all.

Homicide with a gun in the UK: 0.07 per 100,000

Homicide with a gun in the US: 2.97 per 100,000

US rate is more than forty times that of the UK. Which country has broken gun laws? The simple facts are that I'm safer in the UK without a gun than I am in the states with a gun.

Fox Hunt

davidraine says...

I guess this "fox hunt" is a step up from that other hunting we had out west not too long ago:

http://abcnews.go.com/Entertainment/story?id=101053&page=1#.T5_6SFIZ-U4

"The hunter that day claimed to be a businessman from Hawaii named Frank who said he'd paid $10,000 for the experience. He was provided with a paintball gun and ammunition and lined up at one end of the course. Within 10 minutes, he spotted the two women, who were naked except for sneakers and protective goggles."

No, they are not.

Maybe they're not frothing at the mouth to regurgitate any half-baked horseshit conspiracy BREAKING NEWS story about muffins or cigarettes or secret UN camps like FNC, but MSNBC has close to as many negative stories about Obama as Fox does.

You probably won't read any of these statistics, since the little "liberal media" fantasy world you've created will crumble around your feet, but here you go:

(this is a study from August 2010, but it's no diff today, and maybe worse)

• During the past 90 days, MSNBC has run a total of 1,193 stories about Obama with only 44% being positive while 55% were negative towards the President. The positive to negative ratio is -11%

• In the past 90 days, FoxNews has run 2,064 stories about President Obama, 46% were overall positive and 53% overall negative. The ratio of Positive to Negative stories is -7%

Also, how the fuck does Anon expect to "shut down" Fox? I don't get it

Yeah, you let me know if you ever find any free and informed markets.
Fox is nothing but the proganda wing of the republican party preying on week minds. Take them down.

I'm not disagreeing, but what do you do when that judicial due process and the market are owned by the people the propagandists support?

If the propaganda supports those in power, and those in power support the propaganda, there is no due process to fall back on.>> ^fuzzyundies:

I don't respect Fox News in the slightest. I consider them to be intellectually dishonest, hate-filled ideologues who rely upon logical fallacies and inflammatory innuendo to organize and incite their audience.
However:
Censorship of or damage to Fox News is absolutely wrong. Their comeuppance should be delivered by judicial due process and the power of free, informed markets.

Does David Mitchell Have a Door Knob?

I really don't see why they thought it was a lie... it was totally plausible, especially for DM.

I think they like to imagine David as an elitist, public-school wanker. Following that line of (possibly false) logic, that sort of man would have his butler repair the broken door-knob, while he went fox hunting.

Instead of calling sum one a dumass why don't you just provide something that disproves what sum one says, surly you reolise when you call most people a jackass that they are going to pay less attention to what you put and be less inclined to believe what you say.
and no haven't seen that film yet , but i have been meaning to watch it.

If you link me to something that proves that the whalers r not doing it for a living then ill change what i think . I know that the the majority of whale meet is used for BS medicen and stuipd shit , im not infavor of hunting whales but at the same time you have to appreciate that our culture dose equally retarded shit and that sending boats out to annoy people is probably not the most constructive method of stopping whaling from happening.

for example in the uk people have protested fox hunting for fookin decades. I Evan had sum one in my family that used to do stuff to try and make the dogs lose the trail . although it can be satisfying to have an effect in that one instance, on the global scheem of things its pointless , only when the government policy in the uk changed and it became illegal to do real fox hunting has it really stopped. granted for the 10 or so years it took to ban it shit loads of foxes died in shitty ways , but at least now almost non will die.

You are obviously much better at finding dupes than I am. Or maybe siftbot just enjoys torturing me.

Dupofed to the first.

I tried to sift your Snow-Diving Fox video yesterday, and found these two:

http://www.videosift.com/video/Fox-Hunts-in-Snow-Jumps-and-Dives-Down-Head-First
http://www.videosift.com/video/Snow-diving-fox

Neither is a direct dupe, but all three are pretty close, and the first one has the same footage, without narration.

Up to you
