Why We Are Losing the Night Sky

BSR says...

It's amazing how light at night keeps us from the experience that we are drifting in endless space with earth as our only spacesuit. "Living in a fishbowl, year after year."

No, it's that you presume God is irrelevent. That's the natural conclusion from your fishtank example, isn't it? You see a world without God, and I see a world with God. Clearly, only one of us is correct. That is why absolutes are important. Someone is right, and someone is wrong. If you don't believe in absolutes, I would ask you, do you absolutely believe that?

God is Irrelevant, is the point. We can't debate the subject by virtue of its definition, so if you have a differing opinion just deal with it.
Reality is still real. We can interact without absolute knowledge.

"A few years ago the city council of Monza, Italy, barred pet owners from keeping goldfish in curved fishbowls. The sponsors of the measure explained that it is cruel to keep a fish in a bowl because the curved sides give the fish a distorted view of reality. Aside from the measure’s significance to the poor goldfish, the story raises an interesting philosophical question: How do we know that the reality we perceive is true? The goldfish is seeing a version of reality that is different from ours, but can we be sure it is any less real? For all we know, we, too, may spend our entire lives staring out at the world through a distorting lens."

Public Nudity In San Francisco

shagen454 says...

I've lived here for a decade & I don't know about the Castro but public nudity outside of there is rare. I've seen a lot of naked people here that is for sure but it's usually apart of an organized thing where it's pretty much expected & funny. If you don't like it you'll probably know when & where that shit is going down and just make sure you're not around.

I mean of course, if you live downtown in a high-rise you should expect to see nude people because you're living in a fishbowl & there is always that one weird guy that loves walking around his apart naked with the blinds open. I still remember looking up from a bus stop on the corner where I used to live with my girlfriend and seeing some guy jacking off in his apartment staring down at us... CREEEPY.

Model Carolyn Murphy in a surreal slow motion video

ponceleon says...

Very cool, but I don't quite see how throwing goldfish at the model in a fishbowl doesn't harm them. How do they know? I mean, I'm sure they lived after it, but harm can include things that aren't mutually exclusive to death....

... the french kiss with the dog was pretty awesome tho... Clearly the dog wasn't harmed.

Weed? At a concert??

I think the dad knew the risks.

I saw Parliament Funkadelic in the 1990's at college. An AMAZING 4+ hours of tunes, they kept going and going and going FAR beyond their scheduled time. They were having a blast, we were having a blast.
That is.. when you could see the band through the haze LOL. It was an indoor concert, and damnit. The whole place was one BIG fishbowl. Felt a bit bad as at least one father brought their daughter to the concert. This young girl was up on his shoulders enjoying the show, but her eyes were RED from the second hand smoke.

Joe Lieberman On Why He Will Filbuster To Kill Public Option

Drachen_Jager says...

"On Wednesday, Fishbowl DC reported that Michael Clemente, a senior vice president at Fox, had met with White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs and that the two had "reached what some are calling a 'truce.'" FishbowlDC also reported that Clemente subsequently met with the network's Washington bureau and "encouraged staff to remain 'fair and balanced.'""

From Salon.com

I guess they really did come to an arrangement. I've certainly never seen a Fox reporter going after a political ally like that before. With the exception of Maddow and Olberman I've never seen any american cable news show act so critical of a political figure before.

TED Talks are excellent. The more people get exposed to them and expect excellence despite their length, the easier it should become to sift them.

Now I've Done It... (Blog Entry by laura)

oxdottir says...

Don't let this bug you, Laura. Ahem. Bother. uh. You know.

No, seriously, online, people get excited. It's like roadrage, only it's bits.

Don't take it seriously, and don't think, if you were in the same room with those who got upset, you wouldn't get along fine. That is, this fishbowl ain't real life. It's a nice place, but it doesn't mean much about dealing with people in person.
