Spider-Woman's Big Ass Is A Big Deal - Maddox

VoodooV says...

Equality for the sexes is still a relatively new thing historically speaking. we are still wired in the brain that the men should be dominant, and the women should be submissive. Men who are submissive are scrutinized. Women who are aggressive are scrutinized. It takes a long time to change how the brain views that stuff. Just because there is a law that says the sexes are equal doesn't change that. Men have routinely been scrutinized for saying demeaning stuff to women and a lot of times the men didn't even think that it was demeaning. You only have to go back to the 60s and the 70s and it would have been considered socially normal.

Not condoning it, but I understand it.

Also playing devil's advocate. What if the cover had depicted her on her knees? On her back spread eagle? straddling something long and cylindrical, possibly pointed?

The Origins of Dragons in Middle Earth

gorillaman says...

Tolkein doesn't seem to have given a detailed origin for dragons, beyond their having been bred by Morgoth. The explanation in the video isn't entirely inconsistent with the legendarium; as a matter of policy Tolkein didn't want evil to be capable of independent creation, so orcs were originally twisted and tortured elves, trolls were corrupted ents, etc.

Glaurung and the rest of the first dragons, however, couldn't fly. That would seem to be a bit of a knock-out punch for the eagles theory. Ancalagon and his winged brethren wouldn't appear until centuries later, in the latter days of the first age.

Traditionally the answer to any unexplained creature of substantial power in Tolkein's works, Tom Bombadil excluded, has been that like the eagles, wizards, balrogs, etc. they were maiar of one kind or another.

Supertramp - "Goodbye Stranger"

mrhyattsville says...

Was coming from a Sunday picnic with a girl I had made love to. I heard this song for the first time. I felt higher than an eagle. She was it, I thought.
Sadly, the next day I was sent to manage our company office in Phoenix. It was a great opportunity and a lucrative one.
I always regretted that move. I miss her still.

At the end, the eagle seems a little disappointed, heh. In this case, with apologies to Arthur C. Clarke: "Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from a rock."
