Who Knew These Guys Were In So Many Movies

ruak says...

Liked the clip, thought I'd help out with the translation, as some expression Google translate totally misses Tried to keep it as literal as possible, here you go

[Flynt]
My friend is my buddy even though he has no money
He’s my appearance, my face but doesn’t look like me
He’s my brother, but we weren’t carried by the same arms
He’s my s’rab (= friend), he surely won’t be the one to denounce me
My friend is my big but he’s not Pierre Menes
He doesn’t break sugar on my back (literal translation of French expression, it means he doesn’t talk about him behind his back)
He can support OM (French soccer team Olympique Marseille) and if it helps him I’d lie to his wife without a problem
And If my friend comes from far away, he or his parents
Black, white, yellow or brown, it makes me one ignorant less
I do not expect you to wax my shoes (again French expression, it means he doesn’t expect him to kiss his ass)
It will not be because of you being straightforward if I burn the bridges
I wouldn’t put you in my mess if I did something stupid
I wouldn’t ask you to come down with a shovel at night without asking any questions
But if it is needed, bring me back home
If I go crazy bring me back to reason
We can disagree, we can take our heads (French expression, it means We can argue, fight)
But there will always be a piece for you on my plate
My buddy does not scream with wolves
We do not wash our dirty laundry in public (to take care of your personal business) but between us
It is not always the good wind that brings my buddy (It means it is not always a happy reason why his friend is coming to him)
I’m not always OK with how he behaves
I wouldn’t like to learn that he has betrayed me or that he’s plotting
It would bury our relationship even if it’s strong
I have not sealed my fate to his, for me things are clear
My friend is my friend but he’s not my father
I want to keep him a long time so I avoid interfering
Between him and me, money, women and all that could divide us

[Orelsan]
My friend has always been there
Too long, my best friend was me
My buddy stays at my home, we spend sleepless nights
We remake the world, we hear each other even in the silences
My friend always answers my phone calls
That we every hour or every twelve years
I can make him understand everything with a blink
At the edge of the explosion buddy is the pin (goupille is the metal pin of a grenade)
Where I am many people mix friends and groupies
But I’ve understood treason since Fox and the Hound
My buddy isn’t trying to please me at all costs
Doesn’t pretend to look away when my verses are bad
Late evening, always a corner of a sofa
My car is not in the ditch because he keeps the key
Nothing separates us even large sums (of money)
We don’t raise pigs but have raised some sluts
My buddy lowers no one to bring himself in the spotlight
He’s my reflection, breaking us apart is risking seven years of bad luck
My buddy is not a beast in heat
And I can sleep peacefully at night when I introduce him to my sister
Loyal in friendship
If I am not down to earth anymore my dude reminds me of the laws of gravity
Always ready, always the first to come down
in case of a dip or for a game of Play(station)

He’s my antidepressant, my lexo(mil), my friends aren’t all heroes

In practice we all have our faults
If one day in my life I forget to be legit

I’ll listen to this piece again as a kind of memo

[Flynt & Orelsan]
This is for my friend of 20 years
For my buddy of now
He’s my disgusting friend and my dapper dude
For my ugliest friend
For my dumbest pal
For m most down to earth friendy friend
For my friend on Pluto

This is for my easy-talking friend and my dyslexic friend

My buddy that my friend (girl) said no to but persists
For my unemployed buddy, my buddy who works

For my kickeur buddy, my buddy who raps poorly
(kickeur apparently means good rapper: it does)

Boxer buddy, my pianist friend
Performing buddy, buddy artist
Buddy hook, buddy Roger
My friend who crashes at a mate’s house and has no projects

Dude in a suit, buddy in Coste-la (Coste-la is actually ‘verlan’ for Lacoste, the brand)
My friend who lives in the countryside

You Are Not Special: Commencement Speech from Wellesley High

sixshot says...

Food for thought...

Wellesley, Massachusetts is a high-class neighborhood so it may come as no big surprise to hear something like this (a speech that is meant to be profound or philosophical in some way). However, it should be obvious to anyone who has seen (or read?) Fight Club that you are never special.

Also of note, Wellesley is also home to some of the most dumbest residence in the state of Massachusetts. Each week (or rather, each Friday), a local radio station would read some of the more retarded entries from the Wellesley Police Blotter. Some are more crazier than others and some are just flat out stupid. I cannot say for certain if this is frequent... as some of the entries that are read out are quite old.

Lord Tywin reveals his knowledge of Arya's ruse - S2E7

Yogi says...

Jeoffrey is easily the dumbest character on that fucking show. Whenever he's on screen it's just so the writers can remind you "Oh btw don't forget he's a little shit." It's not interesting, he's not well written or even someone I'd care if they killed off. Just keep him in the background if anything, hell fire the actor and hire a new one each week, it wouldn't matter because he's that shit.

ChaosEngine said:

Tywin is a cold, calculating magnificent bastard, and in the books that's really all he is.

One of the reasons I love this scene (and it's substantially different from the books, where Arya never meets Tywin) is that it humanises Tywin somewhat.

Some fiction likes to portray the bad guys as inhuman monsters, but in reality most people (even the very worst) are not like that. They came to where they are through a series of small steps, each more horrific than the last, but each justified in their own mind.

That, to me, is far scarier than the likes of Joffrey or the Mountain. Joffrey is just broken, and Ser Gregor is almost literally a monster. But Tywin made himself into what he is.

And that's the brilliance of this story. When you can feel sympathy for a character whose first significant act is to push a small boy out a window because he was saw him engaged in incest, you have a good writer.

Global Wealth Inequality - What you never knew

swedishfriend says...

300 people! If they gave up half their money there would be no poor people anymore and those 300 would still be rich for generations to come. How does one of those people deserve to have the wealth of 10 million people put together? these are by definition the cruelest, dumbest, least among us and yet they are somehow worth 10 million times as much as your average person?

BANNED TED Talks Graham Hancock on Consciousness Emergence

BicycleRepairMan says...

Sigh. Its not that I dont want a "spiritual experience", its just that the "spiritual" DOES NOT EXIST. This is chemicals reacting with the neurons in your brain, making you think you are experiencing "spiritual" things. It doesn't matter that you go "you just dont understand, man, try it yourself" blahblahblah. I dont have to. Because whatever subjective experience I'll have or you've had, will not change some basic facts that we all have to deal with: That we , along with our brains and our consciousness, are evolved biological phenomena that abide by the laws of physics. We even know that the brain is a fallible instrument thats just SO easy to fool, you dont even need drugs. Right now there are literally billions of people who are wasting almost their entire life believing in nonsense, They use laptops, mobile phones, planes and they've seen the freaking moonlanding, and they think a freaking Palestinian zombie was the son of god who rescued us from collective sin because a couple ate a fruit recommended by a talking snake.
And that's not even the dumbest religion.
People believe such bullshit because they are not really thinking straight , not taking in the facts discovered by science, not understanding the process by which such discoveries are made, not understanding the carefulness by which they are doublechecked, not understanding the implications that such discoveries have.

shagen454 said:

I understand, man. The only way to see that is to do it yourself, obviously if you do not want a spiritual experience, then you are well aware to stay clear.

In the spirit of Godwin, I propose a new internet law that describes the inevitability of the MSNBC false equivalency whenever a comment or topic criticizes FOX news.

I love ya, choggie, and VS is way better and more interesting with you here, but this dog just don't hunt.

I think the days of intrepid journalism are largely over for most of the news sources you mentioned, but there still are pockets of resistance to the inanity that passes as news in America. Regardless of whichever political ideolgy you most identify with, you cannot dismiss MSNBC as opposite but equal to FOX. MSNBC is most definitely liberal/progressive, but they wear it on their sleeve, and their spin is backed by facts and reality. FOX spins everything, and completely misinforms it's viewers fans by simply making shit up, not to mention the ubiquitous fear-mongering, the subliminal programming of their crawl, the always-angry, paranoid, petty, spiteful, and shrill talking heads, and the daily memo'd bullet points that are regurgitated verbatim and hammered into the brains of their veiwers all day long from show to show. The dolts on FOX and Friends have got to be the three DUMBEST people ever to thousand-yard stare into a camera. FOX is "news entertainment" at best.

There are infinite shades of gray between black and white, and MSNBC is definitely biased, but you can't say it isn't factual (the vast majority of time). If there was a true "equal but opposite" version of MSNBC, I would watch it. Unfortunately, FOX serves only as a source of amusement for me. "No Spin Zone" makes me giggle every time Papa Bear says it. It's brilliant parody.

That said, we agree that Americans are largely low information because low information is exactly what we get from the news sources readily available. But the "truth" is out there if one cares enough to go look for it.

Key&Peele "Liam Neesons"

kceaton1 says...

*quality

I really love this skit, it just hits all the right notes, in the right way AND at the right time(s). It's on the mark, over the mark, hyperbolic, ridiculous, sometimes completely correct, but always introduced with a point that is reamed into your mind over and over again--with some people unable to even get the joke if you read Youtube comments for all or any of their skits (reading these comments is actually one of the funniest/funnest things you can do; I swear you literally can find the dumbest people on the planet on Youtube just by reading their comments; for some reason they seem to all like Tea Party related material, HAARP, "Black Helicopters, UFOs, ghosts AND the fact that shows like, "Ghost Hunters", as these idiots always like to say, "IT IS REAL!", and various other stupidity expenditures that in all likelihood takes one I.Q. point off every time they post--they are usually EPICALLY idiotic and can almost induce strokes just by reading their comments at times, as many of you are may be very well aware of--these idiotic posters are contained in this vestibule of the Internet, almost like an abscess of "The Tubes™"...) . A great vaudevillian type skit... Which is why I like so many of Key and Peele's skits and their material as it DOES have that vaudeville quality and atmospheric vibe going for it. I feel as though if you can't like Key and Peele you certainly have a genetic disorder that compromises your ability to enjoy humor and life.

It quite frankly, is a type of comedy that is dying in American television (indie comedies on Cable stations are the key shows still keeping it alive for now--shows like Key and Peele, Portlandia, etc...) and has basically completely disappeared from movies all-together. I think the last comedy that was great, and good enough to count as something along these lines was, "O Brother, Where Art Thou?". Woody Allen and quite a few other directors/writers made a movies that fit this vein, but Mel Brooks really was the king of this type of slapstick and understood this field better than most directors and writers have for a long time.

Although, I know I haven't watched EVERYTHING there is to see, so I readily admit I might be missing some real winners that I REALLY should be mentioning (for example I know Community is very popular, but I don't know what type of comedy it is--is it a typical generic platform comedy, like Friends, or is there something more to it...) . Make sure to post below any other comedies that you feel should be added into the mix, comedies that can be simple on their face, but end up having a lot of intelligent discourse hidden underneath or they just have influences like Key and Peele that give them the feel that a bit of vaudeville and improv (the reason why shows like, "Whose Line Is It?", did so well and if you do a search on Videosift--or Youtube--you quickly realize it was a HIGHLY enjoyed, liked, and well thought of in almost ALL of it's skits, sketches, and comedy routines--a program, that should be mentioned, that originated in the U.K. on the BBC; that version ALSO being excellent in execution, production, and an extremely very well thought out program from it's very inception) are included in their style of comedy and their skits.

Anyway, just my two cents...

/My comment on the state of current U.S. comedy in mainstream media sources is added in so my quality markup isn't just sitting there all alone... Plus it gives us something to talk about besides just this clip/skit.

Chinese Farmer Creates Wind-Powered Car

GeeSussFreeK says...

>> ^jqpublick:

I think it's more likely that this system extends the drive time of whatever battery cells he has installed in the thing. It's not that he's getting free energy, it's just that at 40 the system is going fast enough that even though there's a net loss, the additional energy stored in the batteries gives a longer running time. I think that's just about all that there is here.

That is the dumbest thing I've ever seen.

Agreed. I'd downvote the video if I could. People, if you're in doubt, think of it this way - if the fan could generate more power than the loss of pushing it, then you could just keep adding more fans until it becomes a perpetual motion machine..

Problem, nothing happens at 40 miles an hour in physics for a decrease wind resistance and drag. If anything, the faster you go, the more of a problem wind becomes. There is no possible way that this is extending his drive time. This is exactly equal to holding your hand out the window. If you could turn that blockage into electricity, it will always be less energy than the amount of momentum it sapped via drag. Or else ALL CARS WOULD ALREADY DO THIS! The reason you don't is because it doesn't work.

A simple instance where something like this IS used is the emergency ram air turbine for jumbo jets. When there is a complete loss of power, a ram air turbine drops down to generate emergency power for the hydraulic systems. This increases drag, but it is so small that it isn't a problem. But it is also why air planes don't have windmills on them, anything you use to block the wind is slowing you down more than any recoverable amount of energy via electric conservation of kinetic energy. This is physics 101, entropy, it's a bitch!

Now, if he compressed the incoming air, added a combustion chamber with kerosene or gasoline, then he would have himself a turbine engine for his car, but now, he just has a lesson in why physics is hard.
