@ChaosEngine I imagine because trench warfare was actually used in a few cases during WW2. From Wikipedia:

OH YEAH!!! I could STILL use one of those. It would need to be the large version though, my stump is about 3 times that size! If I had that, I would have finished months ago.
I'm near 1/3 of the way done digging it out by hand. There's a clay layer below it that the roots didn't penetrate, so I have dug down into that, and then I started going sideways under the root mass. It's making a 'cave' of roots that look pretty neat. I might try to leave the stump and roots in the pond for habitat and to make a small island for turtles. I'll have to cut it loose from the walls and below so the concrete will seal, but I have a plan for that. Maybe I'll shoot you a pic if I can 'dig up' your email.

most suspicious is removing the blocks from the bottom layer - you just couldn't do that on dirt - the weight of all the other blocks would have "dug in" the bottom 3 pieces a few inches into the dirt.

The father-in-law of a fellow Toastmaster actually participated in the Great Escape. He was a penguin... responsible for distributing the dirt dug from the tunnels throughout the prison yard via pockets built into their pants. Fortunately, he was NOT one of the ones chosen to escape. Aside from the fact there were no Americans at the POW camp, he said the movie was reasonably accurate, i.e. three tunnels, the one used came up short of the treeline...
The camp commander was imprisoned after the war. Some of his POWs went to visit him to let him know that they bore him no ill will. They were all soldiers and they considered the base commander to be a fair man who treated them well under the circumstances.
He refused to see them. Via an intermediary he relayed to them that he simply couldn't face them. He said that he never felt more ashamed to be a Nazi as when he heard that the SS had executed the 50 escapees from his camp.
The most fascinating part of Jim Lang's story though was the story BEFORE he arrived at the POW camp. Too long to relay here but he was shot out of the sky when returning from an air raid. Spent a few weeks on the run in the Belgium countryside.
He has since died but I fortunately recorded his presentation... just a great slice of history.

I haven't seen it quite like this, they say that's clay in the description there. I was expecting when they dug into it that water would start pooling in the hole...kinda weird.


But I've been on job sites where the ground looks damp at most and the more you drive, walk, whatever over it the water just starts to pump up to the surface and it becomes a total mess. It's why you try not to park machinery anywhere near where you're clearing because you might come back to a machine that once it moves will literally be stuck in something like quick sand.

What I've always been told is that when you prepare a site for something like a walking/driving surface, you have to consider the size and weight of things driving across it. And you install stone in an appropriate size and depth to create ......sort of a locked together surface where all the edges of the rocks form kind of a linked bridge that provides stability over the dirt below it. So the final asphalt/concrete won't break apart because of too much sub-surface movement. And the stone also allows water to drain away into the subsurface or from under the asphalt/concrete so it won't freeze and bust the ground from below.


So I think what the description is saying is that this ground has reached some kind of perfect saturation point. Probably once it takes in so much water it probably fills the clay and the pool structure below it, and then the water has to flow elsewhere.

What you say is true of the Seattle side of Puget Sound. But once you keep going east, over the Cascades, you end up in a huge rainshadow that is most of Eastern Washington.
