Samsung Galaxy S5 - Hammer Test Fail

cegli says...

All lithium batteries can do this if hit with a hammer. Break the separator that keeps apart the cathode and anode and it will short circuit, resulting in it trying to release all of its energy at once.

To avoid this, don't hit a charged battery with a hammer.

The damage to the battery probably caused a short circuit, leading to thermal runaway. Li-ion batteries have a vent to avoid explosion risk, which seems to have turned this particular example into a rocket!

They are also prone to this behaviour if mistreated electrically (over charged, over discharged, overheated...).

Is this something they they put in so they can tell if it's been tampered with inside... because people pull batteries out all the time... What is that thing???

Which is the Killer, Current or Voltage?

draak13 says...

It's actually slightly more complicated still. With the power supply he's using, a DC power supply, he could turn it up to 100+ volts and hold both leads without issue (not touch them to his tongue, but hold them in his hands would be fine). I've done exactly that before; I could feel a slight amount of discomfort as current flowed through my fingers at both leads (the point of highest current density in the circuit that is my body), but it could otherwise be said that it 'tickled'. I've also had experiences once or twice in my life where I accidentally touched 120V AC, and it most certainly did NOT tickle, it HURT.

What people don't realize about humans (and even regular tap water) is that both are actually highly resistive to DC current, in the megaohms region. Once you get to 10's of Hz, for example 60Hz, 100V starts becoming quite deadly. The capacitance in our body (and in water with ion contaminants) allows current to flow much more readily when you get to alternating current of at least that minimum frequency. The net effect is that your body's resistance decreases as the input frequency increases.

Yes, it is 'current that kills', and even more accurately 'current density that kills', but it's the amount and frequency of voltage applied paired with the frequency specific resistance of the system that determines how much current will flow.

Could be for a some but not all of the following reasons:

Peeps here have neurotic voting habits.

Peeps here abide by some anal-esque adherence to their neurosemantic–dexterity circuits.

Peeps here can't stand anything that has to do with churchy-stuff or goddy-god-god subject matter (becasue they have a log-jam the size of Ohio lodged in their asses).

Peeps here think kids doing cute shit is not worthy of their time or vote.

Peeps haven't seen it yet (It's only been up 3hr 10 mins and only 20 or so peeps are logged-on at any given time, and considering the votes-to-views, it will most-likely get a buncha votes as 4 of 11 that have viewed, voted it up)

Peeps have something against Baptists in Kyrgyzstan and children or a combination of, or all of the three.

Some peeps simply suck at life.

Lifes' a bitch when there's so many personality-types and the baggage that comes with 'em....

David Mitchell on Atheism

Firm agnostic here too. The most sane ideology to have today. Tomorrow it might be something else but i feel agnostics are the only ones to use diplomacy between godders and no-godders. Both groups can never understand each other, agnostics understand them both.

To anyone saying that agnosticism is simply just indecisiveness, and that is both sides: it is not. We simply don't think it's an issue you need to be on one side or the other. That's what you do. We accept both views and navigate between them trying to find what is real and what is not, since both sides try to manipulate true facts all the time according to your needs. We don't do that. If something, agnosticism is the true scientific approach; trying to find out what is true without any predisposition or beliefs...

It's ONLY that both sides are now so far apart that anything that contradicts them, is totally blasphemous/unscientific. There is no such thing as true agnosticism. There are people who are closer to believing in god and further away and no one cares how you think. People who belong to either of the marginal camps seems like idiots to me who are never going to be coaxed in either way; the more evidence you put on the table for one argument, you will oppose it even more. Its a futile discussion. We got much bigger problems to solve than if there's a god.

At the moment, there are more evidence pointing that there is no god. Nothing has been proven as a fact in either way. There would be same amount of violence with or without religion, the reasons would change superficially but nothing would change or will change if you abolish or religion. It takes about 10 years that new batch of believers arrive even if you eradicated all religion and all history: if you wipe people minds now, tomorrow someone believes in angels or goblins.. Or dragons.. It's inbuilt survival mechanism: you don't get it all, there must be a bigger plan etc.. it's human nature, not a part of our society. The feeling the presence of God is scientifically proven to be just a short circuit in our brain.. That alone makes it certain that belief in supernatural will go on.

A few years ago this guy was a nobody insofar as the media was concerned. Then he started playing the 'baddie' on Shark Tank and the Canadian version of Dragons' Den.
I think this guy is borrowing a page from the likes of Ann Coulter and other right-wing talking heads. Essentially, they are media whores who know that controversy helps to sell their books, programs, lecture circuit, investments... their 'celebrity-ness'. So they say outrageous stuff because they know it gets them face time in our dumbed down media. How do you think it ended up here on Videosift?
Whether they actually believe their own shit... who knows?

Woman Stays Deadly Calm During Crash.

Not really-You immediately found what it took to begin the process of stabilizing yourself with the first thing that made you feel like you had control after having found yourself in complete chaos. Good thing. That simple realization of your circumstances is part of a functioning 1st-circuit bio-survival circuit. Staved-off shock.

You might be surprised. I had a similar one only the car ended up its side (driver's), and a lot of the things people tell me they'd do or react is the kind of thing i thought i would have before it actually happened. It seems like there's no time to do anything really before some serious forces are hitting you at which point you can't think rationally because you're in survival mode. First thing i did was check my phone was ok before i started to climb out, weird.

World War Two Movie Making Gone Wrong

The cyclists I spoke so fondly of are a small segment of the cycling population and my consternation is borne of the occasional variant described, who treat their mode of transportation like their sexuality or alternative lifestyle-choice.

MOST folks who use bikes as their sole mode of transportation are common-sense courteous and 'invisible' to motorists, this is due primarily to a properly-functioning survival circuit in the grey matter area.

It's the passionate geeks trying to serve as a shining example of conservative, earth-friendly superiors pushing that envelope between sucking-air or taking a dirt-nap. My pal who got killed during a Critical Mass ride in S.F. was not one of these, he was simply in the wrong group at the wrong time.

Oh-when I ride a bike, I ride against the flow of traffic as I do when I walk down a street-WHY? Because I want to optimize my chances of survival against the ever-growing number of lame-brains who compulsively and obsessively, text while driving. Heck, most folks can't carry-on a phone conversation, blue-tooth or not without forgetting they are charged with a 3000 lb death machine.

Erics' right when he says you are hyper-aware while riding on two wheels, be it motorized or not. You have to be if you want to live.

Take a picture-My rant here contained NO expletives or curses, I found Jesus yesterday and he told me to and I quote, "For fuck's sake, fucking cut that shit the fuck out or else!"

Mountain bike backflip over 72ft gap

Sagemind says...

Well, as much as I want to say that's cheating, we used to do the same thing with dirt bikes. We'd spend a few days cutting stumps and building up burms and digging out sections. they weren't always usable right away though, but after you leave them for a few weeks and let the ground harden up again, it made for some great trail circuits.

Ain't gonna happen, it's a gang not a club.
The institution has become wholly corrupt and complicit with those who would observe and dictate to all how much free will they are allowed. Will only get worse until (if at all) people stop giving them more and more and more power.
Best bet for peeps in the states, since people give away their rights as humans with robotic fervor, is to GTFO before the shit implodes....because when Wiemar Republican inflation hits, many people in the U.S. will embrace their hind-brain survival-mode circuits, and it's gonna be dangerous and martial here, for a reasonably long, foreseeable future.

Why will peeps in the U.S.(UK) panic? Because a very small percentile of citizens have any survival skills beyond credit or commerce anchored in $$, and when that's gone shit gets uncooperative in large groups of hapless desperadoes.

I wanna be far, far away from idiots when it happens, with a clan of about 30, absolute motherfuckers....and their wimmins.
