World Drone Prix-Dubai

Ghostly says...

Wow, this looks so much cooler than the Drone Racing League, at least in terms of the video quality and sense of speed. DRL is arguably more impressive with their indoor high risk circuits though.

Looking forward to seeing more of both!

Charging a cell phone on the railroad?

Mordhaus says...

Honestly, I don't know. But the description of the system leads me to believe it might trigger something, since closing the circuit to get the charge is basically what the train's axle setup does.

SFOGuy said:

Oh man, thank you.
So, train safety scheduling signals.
Sudden perverse thought; shorting or charting across the rails doesn't confound that system does it?

The Millionaire 4 Function Mechanical Calculator

oblio70 says...

Wow! Amazing lost technology. Utter brilliance. like Maillardet's Automaton or the Antikythera Mechanism, we have yet to see the apex of (currently put to bed by the Integrated Circuit industry)...physical memory devices still holds validity to modern needs, methinks.

An EMP won't stop this bitch from multiplying!

Judge Dead, 2016 (RIP(?) Antonin Scalia dead at 79)

Further down on the Onion...

Here is a step-by-step guide to how U.S. Supreme Court justices are selected:

Step 1: Supreme Court vacancy opens after a sitting justice dies, retires, or is promoted to the Galactic Circuit
Step 2: President wistfully crosses out own name from list of potential candidates
Step 3: Official presidential nominee slowly lowered by rope into Senate Judiciary Committee pit
Step 4: Nominee charged one-time $30 background check fee
Step 5: Candidate asked whether they see themselves in exact same place 35 years from now
Step 6: Judiciary Committee members ask nominee whether they capable of writing a dissent that could be described as “blistering”
Step 7: Candidate attests they have no opinion whatsoever on issue of abortion, don’t know what it is, and frankly have never heard such a word uttered before
Step 8: Senate takes nominee out to drinks to see how they act in casual, informal setting
Step 9: Nominee stands as their predecessor’s robe is draped over them to see if government can save a few bucks on not ordering a new one
Step 10: Following months of direct questioning, witness testimony, and poring over the nominee’s qualifications and judicial history, the Senate votes on whether they like the president or not
Step 11: If confirmed, justice takes oath of office and is assigned a bench buddy to help them through their first few opinions
Step 12: If candidate not confirmed, process repeats indefinitely until other party holds White House or country is awash in the hot, crimson blood of neighbor killing neighbor, whichever comes first

Big Think: John Cleese on Being Offended

bcglorf says...

John Cleese is hardly new to this. When he and the python troop made Life of Brian, more than 35 years ago, church leaders tried hard , and in many locations succeeded in getting it banned.

Back then he did the circuits talking with religious leaders defending that he had the right to still say something even if they disagreed with it. It's worth noting, much of his support came from within Academia were young students were eager to push back against the religious leaders controlling what people should and shouldn't say in a film.

Fast forward 35 years to today, and now a new batch of young students from Academia are making the exact same fight against what should and should not be said. Professors and administrators who don't get on board are getting fired. Students who don't get on board are being expelled.

Where the religious leaders used to try and shut down criticism of their views on religion, abortion, sexual identity and other subjects, today it is SJWs trying to shut down criticism of their views on religion, abortion, sexual identity and other subjects.

Cleese is at least being even handed with calling actions out on both ends of spectrum regardless were he sits on it. It's tragic that the notion of critical thought and argument is done better by comedians than supposed leaders of thought both 35 years ago and still today.

Comedians who thrive on being edgy and pushing those boundaries, yet get upset that sometimes people get offended by that pushing are way more annoying IMO.

"PC" isn't anyone stopping you from telling your edgy joke. But your jokes would no longer be edgy if everyone stopped giving a fuck or occasionally pushing back. You'd just be another Jeff Dunham, even if you see yourself as Bill Hicks.

Tell your edgy jokes, realize people will push back, and say "Oh, good. I'm not some boring nobody." rather than get way more offended at their "offense".

An Unfortunate History of White Actors Playing Other Races

Payback says...

That Short Circuit character made me cringe when I first saw it, if for no other reason than the actor was complete shit even without the accent.

I also firmly believe some of these HAD to be played by whites as no one with a shred of self respect would play the character the way the director obviously wanted if they were that race...

Power Tool Repair Marathon

radx says...

A few months ago, a series of misshaps, including accidentally drilling into a live wire (who put that there?!), led to the death of my rotary hammer's suppression capacitor (see 7:03) -- the holy-fuck-what-just-blew-up kind of death that shorts out the entire circuit, dragging the fuse along into its early grave.

It was an absolute pain in the ass to find a replacement capacitor for a 21 year old Bosch GBH 2-24 DSE, but given how robust that machine has been over the last decades, it was worth it.

Almost dying on his first solo flight...

Chairman_woo says...

I understand now why they always used to tell me off for not looking around enough when flying circuits!

Guy took it pretty well though. I think I'd have screamed outloud when the other plane appeared like that.

Some Of The Millennials In New York

There was a whole circuit on the West Coast about 10 years ago. Where I live ended up being part of it for awhile.

I guess they headed to the East Coast and left us behind...

EEVBlog - Hobbyist Arrested For Bringing Homemade Clock

NicoleBee says...

It seemed to be made clear quite quickly that the clock parts were largely if not entirely stock, and from the look of it I would agree with that. That is mostly what's being seized on right now. I don't know what that means about his intentions, and really, from the guessing and assumptions one way or another, it does not seem that anyone else does either. I guess we'll find out.

Was he circuit bending? Was he simply putting an old clock in a new case? Did he fix it? Was he trying to provoke a reaction? Time will tell. I'll leave the speculation alone, because it's getting pretty ugly.

it is interesting to see how this is playing out.this poor kid is getting used to promote narratives for people who really do not care about this kid,and it appears..he may not even have invented anything.

he probably just did this to impress his teacher and..wow..did things get out of hand fast.

on the one hand you have an authoritarian state who is petrified of brown people pissing themselves, and on the other you have people using this for political expediency to further a narrative.

and all ahmed wanted to do was impress his engineering teacher.(my assumption)

Jono Lester passes 27 cars in the final 6 laps @Clipsal 500

oritteropo says...

The full coverage explains that. This is a handicap series, where professional drivers and faster cars compete against amateurs and slower cars.

As a professional driver in clearly the fastest car in the field, Jono Lester was awarded a whopping 57 second pit stop.

He might even have still managed to win, except that there was a safety car just as the pit window opened and although some cars pitted straight away he didn't.

It was still fairly close

One other thing to point out is that the series format did help with the overtaking, since some of the drivers weren't used to such long races on a street circuit and would have been getting tired at the end (and therefore didn't put up much of a fight).

I can't believe I watched the whole thing.

Can't help wondering: If he's so freaking fast, why was he so far behind to start with? He made it seem so easy to pass all those other automobiles.

Completely Erase Entire Comments from People You're Ignoring (Sift Talk Post)

You know when you have a bruise or a sore tooth and you can't stop yourself from touching it? Ouch ouch ouch, and yet you keep touching it.

This is a grand solution to short circuit our human foible of torturing ourselves with completely avoidable pain.

Thank you.

World's First $9 Computer

spawnflagger says...

Nice idea, but horrible horrible name. "Chip" has meant "integrated circuit" for how many decades now? which chip does Chip use? see the problem? all the kids using this device to learn about computers will start off with incorrect terminology, when discussing with *anyone* who hasn't heard of this device.

"Raspberry Pi" on the other hand - sure it could be a baked food product, but in the context of computers/devices, it's pretty unambiguous.

watch a train getting blown off a bridge

Payback says...

Yes, but probably...

The power went down before the flash burst. Means the wire was grounded, then a connection or breaker exploded (the flash and sparks) severing the shorted circuit, allowing the store's power to come back up. Not really a blackout (power cut), a heavy brown out (power reduced).
