Instructor saves first time solo skydivers life in midair

shveddy says...

Even the smartest people can become "deer in the headlights" type stupid when they are overstimulated in an environment like a skydive. This guy couldn't pull his own chute only because he was new, scared, tense and overwhelmed once he lost control.

This guy wasn't on his first time as a solo skydiver, he probably had ten jumps or so and is clearly still over-amped from the whole experience. The worst thing you can do on a skydive is tense up and overcompensate all of your movements. All you need to do is relax and be symmetrical and you will stabilize thanks to the airflow. This is the exact opposite of what you have been taught your whole life where you need to fling your body's momentum around rather emphatically if you want to get anywhere at lower airspeeds (think doing a backflip off of a diving board, you need to emphatically kick your legs up and your head back - in skydiving it's all about smooth controlled movements that control airflow, not momentum).

The dude just freaked out and flailed about like an idiot. Human error, that's all.

The instructor is a certified badass for catching and saving the student as low as he did.

I would assume he couldn't because either
A) He couldn't correct himself, he always seemed to be spinning and therefore would always have his chute towards the ground. (This seems most likely because every time he moved his arm to reach for the pull, he twisted)

or B) he was too dizzy from doing all his damn spinning to be able to find the pull himself.

Base Jumping With An Un-Packed Parachute.

heathen says...

>> ^GenjiKilpatrick:

...isn't that the safer way to base jump?
Nothing worse then slamming into the adjacent building/structure before your chute fully deploys.

I'd guess the issue with this method is needing to make sure you jump far enough out that you don't fall through your own chute?

Armadillo Aerospace latest rocket hits ground REAL HARD

jqpublick says...

It's all about trajectory. You launch at an angle and force that compensates for drift and earth movement, etc. I bet they expected it to land anywhere within a few miles as it's a chute recovery system. Rockets don't fire on high-wind days because it throws trajectory off.

Yep, expert over here. This guy.>> ^Fletch:

Actually, considering how high it went up, It's quite amazing how close to it's original launch site it landed.

I thought the same thing, if that would of hit someone...ouch.

Was it just luck or does it guide itself at all on the way down? It just seems SO improbable that it would come back down so damned close!
Do you actually think Carmack can design an engine nowadays that isn't on rails? Just because you can see all that landscape doesn't mean the rocket can actually go there. The only way back is through the same boring airspace it had already cleared.
