'Paradise Lost': How The Apple Became The Forbidden Fruit

This month marks 350 years since John Milton sold his publisher the copyright of Paradise Lost for the sum of five pounds.

His great work dramatizes the oldest story in the Bible, whose principal characters we know only too well: God, Adam, Eve, Satan in the form of a talking snake — and an apple.

Except, of course, that Genesis never names the apple but simply refers to "the fruit." To quote from the King James Bible:

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
And the woman said to the serpent, "We may eat the fruit of the trees of the garden; but of the fruit of the tree which is in the midst of the garden, God has said, 'You shall not eat it, nor shall you touch it, lest you die.'"
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"Fruit" is also the word Milton employs in the poem's sonorous opening lines:

Of Mans First Disobedience, and the Fruit

Of that Forbidden Tree, whose mortal taste

Brought Death into the World, and all our woe

How the Mario Characters Got Their Names | Gaming Historian

newtboy says...

Ok, they can say that and maybe it’s true, but I just want to point out that in the amazing 1953 French film, The Wages of Fear, the main characters are Mario and Luigi, and Luigi looks just like super Mario down to the hat (the Mario character is played by Yves Montand, a skinny French actor). I’ve always found that to be far too coincidental.

Aaaahahahaha! Nice projection....and another failing grade in English. Want to compare transcripts? I know we can only go to 8th grade before yours ends....too bad, I was still getting all "A"s with maybe one "B" in PE then. I would suggest we compare SAT scores, but you indicated you didn't get that far.

I did not catch your cranial rectosis, thanks for the concern, out of character though it may be.

We all know that if you could back up your nonsense with anything that resembles a fact or citation, you would. You never can, and when you try you invariably either turn out to have totally misread what you cite, you cite propaganda sites rated at 5 Pinocchios, or you link to spoof sites based in Columbia that try to install viruses.

We all also know you only make these public insults to try to feel like a big boy, in private you were usually far more reasonable, civil, sometimes even flattering, and privately you could admit you were wrong, not in public though, there you're an uncivil moron spouting insane conspiracy theories and utter nonsense then hiding when challenged, or at best replying with factless, pointless, preschool level snark, and since you said you support lying in any circumstance if it helps your argument or cause, including under oath in the highest court in the land by the top government official, I won't speak to you in private. This made you a constant and consistent unapologetic liar that can never back up their nonsense because there is no corroboration or verification possible for blatant lies, so instead you answer with dumb insults.

At least I offer a fact based (often with citations) argument when I insult your lack of intelligence, education, knowledge, logic, honesty, and civility. You cannot say the same, because you never have a fact based argument to offer, and consequently you are totally incapable of insulting me. D'oh!

So sorry I use fact and citations to disprove your insane infantile nonsense constantly, and don't slink away into the shadows when challenged because my positions are reasoned and considered, and can be logically and factually corroborated, not just insulting preschool nonsense based on wishful thinking like you spout.

NYC's Anti-Vax Rally in 49 Seconds

luxintenebris jokingly says...

maybe.

ever see "swing blade"? the main character was undoubtedly very bright but was taught in a very poor school (i.e. alone, abused, and alienated). very little knowledge.

an extreme example but anyone can be intelligent 'tho trapped by their environment. lacking knowledge.

it's kinda like that show on Netflix. the local head of the kkk being exposed to the words and life of that black women. he learned - was shown - that his way wasn't the path he wanted to be on. he wised up.

knowledge leads to higher intelligence. he had the intelligence but lacked any reason to change his views (the Tao of Intolerance). intelligent but terribly influenced.

so these folks might have the ability to learn and adapt, but not the velleity.

intelligence is the ability to acquire knowledge, but w/o some basic knowledge, that intelligence can be retard.

that's me. standing up for an ax* murder, a klansman, and goofy GOPers.

how bright am i?

* not an ax really. it was a swing blade but i like to call them a kaiser blade.

Sorry, but you and @luxintenebris are confusing intelligence with knowledge. IQ measures your problem solving skills and ability to learn and adapt that new knowledge to new and different situations, it does not just test your knowledge in certain areas.

It's the difference between being shown how to do a task VS being able to figure out how to do a task on your own.

Both are blights on society and costly of insurance dollars / government aid.

Your comparison of the unvaccinated to those who practice unprotected sex is valid. Both, usually, are the result of ignorance and inconsideration. With no regard to how it affects others or themselves.

You're clever. Like Colbert's old character. Act like your supporting something, all the while giving examples damning that support.

After the recent IPCC climate report an old 'Newsroom' clip

newtboy says...

*doublepromote someone else finally telling the truth, even if it is just a fictional tv character. I’ve been saying the same thing since around 2000. If we went all in, halted all co2 emissions and all methane emissions 20 years ago, and invested in methods to catch and sequester what we already emitted, we might have avoided the tipping point where we are no longer in control….but instead we increased emissions every year, flooring it towards that cliff and hitting the nitrous button.
*quality if inconvenient truths

That tipping point was reached well over a decade ago when methane started to melt out of permafrost and the deep ocean where it has been frozen for eons. It’s capable of causing warming >80 times as much as co2 short term, >25 times as much long term, and is boiling out at rapidly increasing rates. Pre 2006 it’s estimated around .5 million tons per year…2006 it was measured at 3.8 million tons…by 2013 that was up to 17 million tons with the trend increasing. More recent estimates are hard to find, but it’s agreed that as temperatures climb not only are hydrates melting much more rapidly, bacteria are also accelerating decomposition in the thawed permafrost, and they emit methane. The Arctic is warming up to 5 times faster than the average global temperature. It’s likely over 50 million tons per year by now if not much higher.

Shakhova et al. (2008) estimate that not less than 1,400 gigatonnes (Gt=1 billion tons) of carbon is presently locked up as methane and methane hydrates under the Arctic submarine permafrost, and 5–10% of that area is subject to puncturing by open taliks. They conclude that "release of up to 50 Gt of predicted amount of hydrate storage [is] highly possible for abrupt release at any time". That would increase the methane content of the planet's atmosphere by a factor of twelve in one shot….game over.

Bear in mind, 1 cubic meter of hydrate contains >160 cubic meters of methane gas at atmospheric pressure.

The amount of increase from bacterial emissions in rotting permafrost is debatable, but even the lowest estimates are insurmountable.

This is only one of dozens of KNOWN feedback loops already in action, and there are definitely unknown feedback systems we can’t predict.

This does not mean there’s nothing to be done, we can still mitigate the damage somewhat, maybe slow the rate of change enough that some animals and plants more advanced than bacteria survive long term. It does mean a massive >99% culling of humanity, a total shift in civilization from a money based civilization to one focused on survival, and likely an unavoidable mass extinction rivaling any previous extinctions.

That One Guy in Every Dungeons & Dragons Game

dotdude says...

We had a lot more "Scoots"-like personalities in the group I played. Our DM, who had a "god complex", got put out when we derailed his schedule for exploring the dungeon he created. Just getting to his dungeon took a while - all by itself.

My character died early in the game. But the DM allowed me have a new one.

Bravery by denial is cowardice. Cowboy up.

Let me Google that for you.

Cowardice is a trait wherein excessive fear prevents an individual from taking a risk or facing danger. It is the opposite of courage. As a label, "cowardice" indicates a failure of character in the face of a challenge. One who succumbs to cowardice is known as a coward. Wikipedia

Rick and Morty S5:E1

fuzzyundies says...

I'm the opposite, in a sense. I couldn't really get hooked on Futurama. I watched pretty much all the episodes and enjoyed them, but didn't really get attached to any of the characters. However, Rick and Morty keeps me coming back because of the irreverence and the way nothing matters.

Rick and Morty is a middle finger to the universe, to causality, to the notion of object permanence, that suddenly jumps back to remind you of the endless and inescapable human suffering in the middle of it all.

Then again, it's been a fucking rough year. Wubba Lubba Dub Dub!

Rick and Morty S5:E1

cloudballoon says...

I love Futurama, but not Rick and Morty. Don't get me wrong, I like R&M plenty, it's fun & fast-paced and I never missed an episode. But it's not worth the repeat viewing love from me as Futurama does. The characters in R&M are just not as relatable to me.

Rick and Morty S5:E1

spawnflagger says...

I wouldn't judge it based on this new episode, but previous seasons (especially 2 & 3) were entertaining. It's formulaic, so lost it's shock-factor, but there are some long-term character development as well.

@bobknight33, does it make you feel manly posting these highly edited videos making fun of an old man for having mostly overcome a speech impediment? A man who, despite this impediment and growing up poor managed to earn a law degree and rise to the most powerful position on earth. IMO, it doesn’t make you sound manly.
What made you that way?
Why did you choose ignore far worse from Trump when, from him, it was not a speech impediment but a mental disorder and character flaw, but now seem to believe a slight stammer is something to ridicule?
