If you assume (like the yt commenters did) that the shockwave slowed to the speed of sound almost instantly you would calculate a distance of approx 4-4.5kms which would have them almost on the opposite shoreline (or even on land) which they clearly are not...

p.s. Yes I realise that a supersonic shockwave should cause you to underestimate rather than overestimate distances, perhaps they're really a bit further from Rabul than I assumed?

But news stories of prisoner treatment did not become widespread until late in 2004 when internal documents and photos were leaked. The real motivations are myriad and include Isreal, money, and many other things. Be realistic. If all the US had done was put terrorists in a comfy bungalow, then there would still be terrorists in Iraq by the thousands.

I'm not sure I care if pastors take a political position "from the pulpit" but I also think the tax exempt status of churches, synagogues, temples, etc is bullshit.

Where I live we have an ever-increasing amount of land being turned into bungalow colonies which are tax exempt as "Religious Retreats". In my county (Sullivan of NY) I'd guess somewhere in the vicinity of a 3rd of our otherwise taxable land has been taken off the tax roll in such a manner. The result is the tax increases for the rest of us and we're not a wealthy area to begin with.
