Bonhoeffer‘s Theory of Stupidity

TheFreak says...

Holy shit sticks! We're all numb to the nazi Germany comparison being thrown around during arguments.

But the fact is, a description of the social and cultural state at the time of the rise of the nazi movement by a man WHO WAS THERE and fought against it....is identical to what's happening with maga/fox. Trump literally IS a new age, American, Hitler, and Bob and his ilk, the modern brownshirts.

Neo nazis are just niche bigoted haters, but the maga crowd are the literal successors of the historical nazis with the power to actually destroy our society.

I'm Smart

moonsammy says...

It was "stand back and stand by" - which is actually worse. "Stand down" at least implies some degree of "hey, quit that" while "stand back" is more a warning to be careful. What's most troubling is that "stand by" is a straight-up order to wait for further orders. That direct order to an extremist paramilitary organization could well be the moment when we fully tipped to fascism. He's adopted his own Brownshirts.

So smart he thinks directing white supremacist terrorists to "stand down and stand by" as their leader is the same as disavowing them and telling them to be non violent.

Okay

I just took a long walk to have lunch. As I walked, I noodled and noodled on my Homeland comment (if it isn't obvious by now, I use that comment all the time.) How to give it context so as to not give the wrong impression? How to keep it short, given how complicated the context is?

Finally realized the power of the snark. Parentheses. Those communicate quickly.

Still needed more. Has to be short.

I sat to eat my lunch, and opened the book of essays I was reading. (I always read while eating if alone.) And there it was.

So. Would you be interested in being my editor for this project? Help me hone it? Get it succinct? (If you are interested, I have a great story about the Broadway musical Guys and Dolls struggles to be succinct. Came to mind when I stumbled on the idea of parentheses.)

Okay. Here goes. Let me know if you would like to help me get it right:

As "Homeland Security" says, if you see something, SAY something. (Meant to be read snarkily. Because here is the truth: As Holocaust survivor Elie Wiesel said: "Silence encourages the tormentor, never the tormented.")

It is still long. I'll have to copy and paste a long time before I remember it. But it provides context and I hope it communicates that you cannot confuse me with a Brownshirt.

"Stupidity of American Voter," critical to passing Obamacare

blankfist says...

Yes, why vote when we can have brownshirted mods to carry out justice. Much more efficient. No need for mob rule when we can have an elite few do it. I like this idea. I vote for this. Make VoodooV the site's Goebbels!

VoodooV said:

why do we have to call it siftquisitions when we can call it just....moderation like every other freaking site

getting kicked out of here shouldn't be put up to a vote. Bans are not popularity contests I don't understand what's so difficult about this...

someone with authority needs to simply enforce the fucking rules

violation of rules = warn/some form of punishment
continued violation of rules = ban

doesn't get more basic and simple than that. Someone just needs to DO it

this site has become infested with trolls because the word has gone out that its virtually impossible to get punished here. This place is slowly starting to become indistinguishable from YouTube comment threads

self linking, sure we'll ban you for that, but repeatedly troll, say blatantly racist things or blatantly abuse the voting system? yeah sure whatever/turn a blind eye

That's crazy. Your country sure has a lot of stupid people

The worst part is, I guess, that they're not really stupid, they just aggressive and stubborn. No respect, I tells ya.

Nah, blankfist leaves that kind of harassment to the brownshirts teabaggers. It's been going on for a while.

I don't put Obama stickers or magnets on my car for exactly that reason. Add in that I usually drive a Prius, and it's just too tempting for America's nationalists to leave be.

In 2008 there was a very concerted and persistent effort put forth by somebody to steal people's Obama yard signs too. I had mine stolen a couple times, and then discovered it was a nationwide phenomenon. I never heard if they found out who was behind it, but it wasn't just random, they'd get stolen from whole streets at a time.

I hesitate to think how they'll behave in 2012. Rocks through windows? Burning crosses?

Winstonfield_Pennypacker says...

Just because someone is liberally biased doesn’t mean they can read minds, so no one knows what the people were or weren’t cheering.  Even if there were some who are cheering for the reasons neolibs discuss, it is still impossible to ascribe that intent to even a tiny fraction of the total audience.  But compounding the prejudice, neolibs apply the caricature onto entire populations who weren’t even there.

Prejudice and hate cause human beings to believe stereotypes as a means to quickly poison the mind.  Such poison acts as a sedative to cloud reason, mercy, and understanding.  This dulling of human beneficence makes the prepared rabble
easily manipulated and susceptible to the ginning up of anger and hate.  And finally, it creates a mob that has no problem carrying out acts of violence.  Gobbels could only tip his hat in admiration at how successful the Democrats have been at suckering in so many ready, eager, and willing neolibs to be brownshirts.

At this point it is quite impossible to keep track of all the myriad abominations that neolibs use as talking points to vilify anyone who has even the slightest deviation from their radical philosophies.  This is what we get for electing a Community Organizer I.E. Rabble Rouser.  If the left-wing blogosphere is any indicator, he’s certainly good at the only ‘job’ he’s ever held before.  This is going to be a messy election not because the GOP has a few people who inappropriately cheer the principle of justice at the wrong moment.  It’s going to be messy because the radical left is about 3 hairs and some air away from lynching anyone who looks at them cock-eyed.

Lawsuit After Guy Tasered 6 Times For Crooked License Plate

bareboards2 says...

I thought almost every viewpoint while watching this vid. The only thing I have to add is:

1. The guy was standing there facing a police officer with a pistol drawn on him. For three minutes. Facing a PISTOL BARREL. And he would rather argue than follow simple directions.

I think that is why the cop was stayed so tweaked -- that is completely irrational behavior and every moment shouted "alarm alarm."

2. Now we need a link to a study on how difficult it is to regain rationality after a flood of adrenaline and testosterone -- because the cop was wired on both substances. He was locked and loaded and was doing his training.

3. There is further proof that we aren't in a police state, blankie. This guy wasn't afraid of getting shot. He knew he wouldn't get shot. Can you imagine behaving that way to an SS officer or a brownshirt in Nazi Germany? No way.

Jefferson Memorial Dancing on June 4 2011

blankfist says...

LOUD NOISES!

But seriously, this is why this protest is important to me. I don't know if anyone can claim these guys are all libertarians, first off. That label tends to be bandied about freely whenever someone or a group of people exercise civil disobedience.

Secondly, civil disobedience is extremely important to stave off tyranny early. If you wait until the brownshirts are kicking in your door, then it's too late. You have to start early and often.

And third, let's keep this in perspective. These people are dancing in a public place. If you're justifying the actions of the cops and legislators who want the Memorial to be 'dance free' then you have to ask yourself why. It's dancing. It's never been a problem at the Memorial (or any of the tourist locations in DC) in the history of it being built, so why now do we need a law banning it? Was dancing turning into a big issue at the Memorial prior to this law? No. Then why? Because some legislator somewhere wanted to show the world the size of his cock. I say civil disobedience is the correct response to pathetically worthless laws that make victims out of the innocent people committing these victimless "crimes".

"Look How Dangerous These School Teachers & Nurses Are!"

@NetRunner, remember when you generally agreed with Hitler on a "visceral" level? Thought his program for NSDAP was, for the most part, a good document for government? If not, please feast your eyes on your very own words:

Heil NetRunner! It's good to know other brownshirts on here are in agreement with you, you big silly Machiavellian Superman!

Revoke BP's Corporate Charter

blankfist says...

But these unprovoked wars and the US hegemony exist, and they're a creation of Democratic and Republican government. Local law enforcement is becoming militarized brownshirts thanks to a large central government. This is a far worse outcome than even the worst that can come from a Libertarian utopia. But you're more worried about a theoretical "economic extortion" from private landowners over the current realistic government tyranny and government's own economic extortion.

What rights in a Libertarian society aren't protected? I'm a minarchist, not an anarchist, so I see government having a specific role, and that is to protect human rights and serve as unbiased arbiter for disputes. I don't understand why you'd think your rights would not be protected, but I'll chock that one up to a lack of understanding what a free society really means. Libertarians don't believe government's role to be forced taxation (theft, servitude), offensive wars, babysitting the world, social engineering by force, imperialism, espionage, suspending habeas corpus, etc. But Democrats and Republicans do.

Now contrast that simple minarchist belief with your own statist belief, and you tell me which society protects rights and which does not. Because in your society I can give you loads of examples where your large government has done the opposite of protecting rights, and has instead encroached upon them.

Government Goons Threaten Jurors' Rights Activists

volumptuous says...

HEY EVERYONE!!

TWO GUYS WERE DOUCHEBAGS>>> ALL GOVERNMENT MUST BE DESTROYED!!

Is volumptuous just a troll now? Being that it was more than a dozen police, and no one is advocating the destruction of government but him? Should he be on a watch list?

I see two asshole cops out of about ten.

Two were being total assholes, and should probably be fired. The others were there as "backup" or probably because they were super bored.

But if you understood the sentiment behind my comment, you'd realize I'm just pointing out that using terms like "government goons" and "brownshirts" (Godwin's law in the tags of the video? This must be an alltime first for Videosift) is just way over-the-top ridiculous, but is once again used by BF to show how if two douchebag cops are douchebags, that must mean the entire system of governance in this country should be dismantled.

Duh.

Police Officer Accountablilty - "Arrest Shooters" Gizmodo (Wtf Talk Post)

blankfist says...

Almost without exception, police officials have staunchly supported the arresting officers. This argues strongly against the idea that some rogue officers are overreacting or that a few cops have something to hide. "Arrest those who record the police" appears to be official policy, and it's backed by the courts.

This looks like a perfect place for my catchphrase: "Haha. Way to go statist idiots." I'd much rather have my neighbors walking the streets with guns on their hips like the old west rather than the thug brownshirts the police departments are turning into.
