Come on down to Blues & Roots! The newest channel. :} (Music Talk Post)

EndAll says...

Thanks Gwiz, and you ask some good questions.

I understand the confusion, and I do believe that jazz will exclude legitimate blues posts' from now on, although there is such thing as blues-jazz fusion music. It might get a bit mixed, but that's all good IMO.

I'd like to keep it as having only music that is inspired by blues, IS blues, or is a derivative of blues. Along with that, as I mention in the channel description: This channel will be for all kinds of blues music, as well as traditional Americana, folk, roots music, and contemporary roots revival music, leaning towards a bluesy sound.

IMO sad != blues, but exceptions can be made and I'm open to accepting some of those.

Wow, that's surprising, though not so much since I'm hearing this from Sifters (who tend to be busy pursuing more intellectually stimulating past-times than the usual intertube bodyboarder).

Yeah, he's been pretty popular for a number of years and is famous for his folky, bluesy brand of mellow tunage.

"It all comes down to opinion"... true-story!

Did you check out the 'Jolene' cover? Their non-linear, bluesy cover vs. Dolly's lock-step original is maybe a good example of whats cool about Meg and Jack White's stuttery drums-guitar-vocals minimalism.

I play the drums, and have in the last 4 or 5 years really learned an appreciation for drummer-as-compliment to the tone of the rest of the band. This is opposed to where my first love of the drums came from (metal and funk music, where the drums are very often the star).

I was thinking about this a week ago listening to an Interpol album. Their drummer is great, and has some interesting and difficult stuff, but never seems showy or draws much attention to himself.

(No worries about being too surly, we're all defensive about the music we like. )

I understand the premise of the White Stripes, but I feel as though there are just so many better bands (to me) in the same general sound area, mainly the originals. Jack has some pretty good guitaring skills, there's no denying his ability to write catchy riffs. I personally don't enjoy his voice, and the overly simple drumming just makes it even harder for me to enjoy them. I'm not a drummer myself, but even the least skilled drummers I know of in the bands that I listen to have far more variety of style and a higher skill level than she does. I didn't really mean to say that she needed to be "professional," just that the lack of variety in the rhythm drags down the song, in my opinion.

It all comes down to opinion, in the end, really. Musical quality is entirely subjective and is based only off of how much the individual listener enjoys it.

Oh, by the way, I did watch the entire clip, I just didn't enjoy it quite enough for an upvote.

Ahoy! I replied (in a rather surly way, for some reason... too much coffee?) to your comment!

Cheers!

I don't understand why they're so popular. In my personal opinion, their compositions are all ridiculously bland. The drumming lacks any sort of zest at ALL. I generally expect a "professional musician" to display a lot more skill than that. Be creative, etc. Seriously, she seems like she's totally incapable of focusing on more than three parts of the set at once.

Can´t miss em. Brett is the 1,95 tall guy with the hair that looks like an exploded sofa cushion...

Oh and another guy worth checking out is Tim Ireland, also from the same Sydney gang. Bit more folky so it might not fit your bill but who knows...

Actually you should browse around Peregrines Myspace contacts. They have heaps of cool musical friends from around Sydney. Extended family (very bluesy, funky) Entropic (more electronic) Melanie Horsnell (folk meets pop) Bertie Blackman (very rocky)...

As far as Meg's drumming, I'm in agreement that it's all been said.

Here's a quote from Bamdrew in another White Stripes sift that I feel should be read by anyone who comes into a WS sift and complains about Meg's drumming:

"i'm tired of people raggin on her sucking at drumming. she had no musical training before she started banging the beat out for jack; its not like she's pretending to be a virtuoso, she's backing up the lead with simple, primal, 1-2 beats.

i think it would be distracting if there were some fucking danny carrey going nuts on all their bluesy, roots-rock songs. they've been around for a while now, they have a grammy award, its time to understand she's playing the drums exactly how jack wants them played." -Bamdrew

Couldn't have said it better myself.

@Hex, That's awesome. I would've loved to have seen that. Jack White once said that his favorite shows are when things go wrong and he's forced to improv. He feels that some of this generation of concert-goers are somewhat 'spoiled' in the sense that they come to a show, giving nothing to the energy/atmosphere and expect to be entertained. He says that's why they never have a specific set-list, plays with instruments that he's played with for years, and never has anything specific in mind as to how the show will go. Any disasterous event (IE- a broken string) would be the saving grace, and leave the audience with something that they'd remember.

Sylvester's avatar looks like a ghost doggie with a knife.

Here's Fletch's first avatar that I liked:

I'm now wondering if that's a Martin Guitar Dag's holding . . . hmmmmm?

@snaremop, I knew that was deoderant! Disney is a great place, no?

@farhad, I like the riot cop.

Swampgirl . . . love your dog. It always make me feel bluesy in a musical sort of way when I see it with Swampgirl

I liked Ant's old avatar better than his current one, but the current one makes me think of electron microscopes which sends me to YouTube looking for good science stuff.

@gwaan - Is that spaghetti or snot?
