The One Ring Explained. Lord of the Rings Mythology Part 2

TheFreak says...

When I originally saw the scene, in the theater, where Gandalf confronts the Balrog at the bridge of Khazad-dûm, I believe I saw a tiny flash of bright red light from Gandalf's hand right before he struck the bridge with his staff. I have not been able to identify that detail in any small screen viewing of the film but I'm almost certain I saw it in the theater. I believe that was the power of Narya being summoned.

MilkmanDan said:

Narya is the "ring of fire", and in the timeline of LoTR it is held by Gandalf. Which makes sense, because he does a lot of fire-related stuff with his magic.

The Origins of Dragons in Middle Earth

gorillaman says...

Tolkein doesn't seem to have given a detailed origin for dragons, beyond their having been bred by Morgoth. The explanation in the video isn't entirely inconsistent with the legendarium; as a matter of policy Tolkein didn't want evil to be capable of independent creation, so orcs were originally twisted and tortured elves, trolls were corrupted ents, etc.

Glaurung and the rest of the first dragons, however, couldn't fly. That would seem to be a bit of a knock-out punch for the eagles theory. Ancalagon and his winged brethren wouldn't appear until centuries later, in the latter days of the first age.

Traditionally the answer to any unexplained creature of substantial power in Tolkein's works, Tom Bombadil excluded, has been that like the eagles, wizards, balrogs, etc. they were maiar of one kind or another.

My god you realize what this is.... this is not a flood control system... this is a coverup. They'd discovered Moria! Refer to 01:25

But where did they put the Balrog?

If you pause at 1:32 you can just make it out in the upper left. That's why this clip was only 2 minutes long, it killed the entire crew and this was footage was sent back as a warning. It's OUR coverup, not Japans.

AudioSurf - Diablo Swing Orchestra - Balrog Boogie

Krupo says...

I like this video, but never really got the hang of audiosurf. Blagged a torrent of it, installed it, tried about a dozen tracks but just didn't feel it was that great... yet everyone seems to rave about it... am I missing something?

With a legit version you'll compete with score against the whole world which definitely adds a fun twist.

DUDE - it's like 10 bucks. Just buy it and love it.

Or get a legit DEMO off Steam - I think that still allows you to compete so you can see if I'm right about competition = $10.

Also, this song is very trippy/cool. Upvote!

Gandalf vs The Balrog - The Lord of the Rings

coupland says...

One of the things I love most about this clip is when Gandalf turns to confront the Balrog. It flames and roars, and as Gandalf starts his speech it begins to dawn on you that this feeble guide who entertained children with fireworks is nothing you thought he was. And just as you realize this, *poof*, he is lost. This is what movies are all about.
