Beyond The Crash - The Worst News Of Your Life

newtboy says...

For one, nightshift workers, especially night shift drivers. Things are dangerous enough for them as is without making them survive a nightly road purge.
For another, many drunk drivers already have kids, so wouldn't be wiped from the gene pool.

I liked the old German model where any detectable alcohol at all while driving is automatic suspension of your license. It's not perfect but I'm fairly certain they have way less dui's because there is no level of intoxicated that's legal so fewer people convince themselves they're not too drunk.

Vox: Why video games are made of tiny triangles

HugeJerk says...

When I started in games, we could create assets with polygons that had more than 3 vertices, as long as it was coplanar. This probably still works because when the switch from software rendering to hardware was going on, even the early cards like the S3 or 3DFX would automatically handle it by converting it into triangles.

When you forget to strap in your hang gliding passenger

Sniper007 says...

Labeling the pilot as an idiot may not be a good way to ensure things like this don't happen again. As mentioned above, the same exact thing happened to a highly experienced, highly decorated hang gliding trainer. It seems to be a momentary lapse in judgement in what (to them) is a routine so ingrained as to be automatic.

Maybe they should implement written checklists like pilots. For hang gliding, it could be something both the instructor and the passenger need to physically sign off on. I imagine it wouldn't be too burdensome since it is likely to be very short (at least compared to pilot checklists).

Baring checklists, the safest hang gliding instructor in the world is likely to be this gentlemen following this incident. I recon his vigilance is sky high at the moment. (Assuming he didn't quit altogether like his BC counterpart.)

White House revokes CNN reporters press pass

newtboy says...

Urp. I just threw up in my mouth a little...thanks a lot.

Ok....mea culpa. After decades of being the propaganda wing for the far right, I do automatically think anyone willing to defend them must be a fan. I'm not a CNN fan, but I often defend them.

I agree, they offer the "other" side's view, often drafting it themselves. What I can't agree on is them being a source of information beyond what the right's talking points will be. As I noted before, their viewers are astonishingly less informed than people who watch zero news.

I agree, there is slant in most news today, sometimes outright zealous bias, and that's a bad thing no matter who does it.

I am surprised Fox can still think ahead enough to back freedom of the press, especially their nemesis CNN, considering the short sightedness and hyper partisan nature of their hosts and writers....pleasantly surprised. I often hope I'm wrong in my assessments, which are invariably cynical.

Amy Schumer or Madonna is my best guess .

I love how you keep saying it is my source of choice when I am saying it offers the others sides views on things.
It certainly isn't or wasn't my choice but forced on me by the silliness which is most of main stream news today.
I am, in a sense, creating my own balanced reporting but it is a path loaded with truth bending, from both sides in order to push their agendas with a few good folks sprinkled in actually telling the truth.
Like I have said more than once, yes I do watch it, but I also watch and read other more liberal or mainstream sites which I have always done.
I am actually surprised that you were surprised Fox backed CNN.

TED Talk: Whitopia

Digitalfiend jokingly says...

Yay another thing to feel guilty about!

I'm going to have to really keep on my toes to ensure I'm not living in a Whitopia so that I'm not accidentally labelled a racist or white separatist.

I'm unsure what to make of this video, to be honest. Did this person poll the residents of each host town to determine why the moved there? Is the town mostly white because white people simply just want to only see white faces? Is it because they want to live amongst people that share similar cultural values, ideals, and belief systems? Is it just pure co-incidence? He sort of touched on that at one point in the presentation but then went back to suggesting it's bad to want security, a sense of community, etc ... if you're white.

I still don't understand what is inherently bad here; I guess I'm confused about the message. From what he told us, he was treated extremely well by the residents he interacted with. Is this a bad thing now? In my opinion, like-cultures seem to segregate themselves. For instance, in Canada we have portions of major city centres (even entire cities themselves) where the majority of the population is Chinese or Indian or Middle-Eastern or African Canadian. I think this would hold true for the US as well. Does this automatically make the people of those communities racist, just because they co-located with each other or does that only apply to white people?

Lastly, was most of the audience high? I couldn't figure out what they were laughing at half the time.

Spinning Swing Challenge

oritteropo says...

The yt info is:

Le projet le plus fou de l'été !
Le premier tourniquet tracté par des bœufs en plein milieu d'un lac. Les règles du jeu sont simples sur ce drôle de manège : qui tiendra le plus longtemps !?
Grâce à un système de déclenchement fait avec 2 mousquetons de largage, dès qu'une personne lâche, la corde glisse et l'autre est automatiquement larguée. Au final, la force centrifuge était telle que personne n'a réussi à tenir au delà des 30/35 km/h !

Or, in English:
The craziest project of the summer!
The first ever roundabout (literally turnstile, means something like the rotating swings in children's playgrounds) towed by oxen in the middle of a lake. The rules are simple on this amusing ride: Who will hold on for the longest!?
Thanks to a trigger system made with 2 release carabiners, as soon as a person lets go the other is automatically released.
In the end, the centrifugal force was such that nobody managed to hold on beyond 30/35km/h (approx 20mph in U.S. measures).

Bear Smashes Way Out Of Minivan!

ravioli says...

For anyone wondering...

YT desc : Minivan owner says, "A bear opened the door to our unlocked van. I unwittingly closed him in, then went back a while later to retrieve something from the car, I realized a bear was inside. After the automatic doors failed to open, my husband had to unlock it with the key. The bear found another way out. We’re alive – our van, not so much!"
