Star of India Tacking and Wearing

BSR says...

Interesting but hard to follow as I don't know what sails were moving. I think an animation showing the sails and movement of the ship would be a nice addition to the real ship.

That's a lot more deckhands than I thought was needed. Guess that's why they cram so many men on pirate ships.

time lapse video of the biggest sunspot in 22 years

eric3579 says...

The solar flares are very cool. I suggest watching in HD and full screen for maximum awesomeness.

Also from YT description:

The surface of the sun from October 14th to 30th, 2014, showing sunspot AR 2192, the largest sunspot of the last two solar cycles (22 years). During this time sunspot AR 2191 produced six X-class and four M-class solar flares. The animation shows the sun in the ultraviolet 304 ångström wavelength, and plays at a rate of 52.5 minutes per second. It is composed of more than 17,000 images, 72 GB of data produced by the solar dynamics observatory (http://sdo.gsfc.nasa.gov/) + (http://www.helioviewer.org/). This animation has be rendered in 4K, and resized to the Youtube maximum resolution of 3840×2160. The animation has been rotated 180 degrees so that south is 'up'. The audio is the "heartbeat" of the sun, processed from SOHO HMI data by Alexander G. Kosovichev. Image processing and animation by James Tyrwhitt-Drake.

Archerized 'Danger Zone' Music Video from 'Top Gun'

Deano says...

Such a great show. Might be the first animated show that's extremely funny and not really for children - in my experience.

I also think they get away with a hell of a lot of stuff they wouldn't if this was live action.

Hot Renaissance Festival Violinist

Another Texas sifter! Im actually less than an hour from the festival myself and I hardly ever go but always plan a trip in my head. You think there would be a lot of dirt about the eccentric owner on the web who fancies himself king of the area and supposedly he lives in a castle. I don't know how much of that is hearsay but eh whatev.

You should make it out there this year. It is a must see/do experience. Over 50 acres of things to do and see. Live jousting, music, magic, animal shows (the falcon show is awesome), things for kids, lots of beer and cleavage, great fair food (smoked turkey legs are a must), even live blacksmithing and glassblowing. There are a lot of people dressed up in period garb and everyone is generally pleasant. It can get crowded and if there is any rain there is mud galore, but it really is a trip back in time.

You may even catch a medieval wedding in the old chapel or the royal procession making its way through the streets, fake king and queen with a full court in tow.

My wife got "abducted" by barbarians one year. They just grabbed her and threw her over their shoulder. I had to "fight" a big, shirtless barbarian with two-handed swords to get her back. Random, but very fun.

Simpsons' Opening - Directed by Banksy

What's a banksy?

http://news.ninemsn.com.au/entertainment/8103700/street-artist-banksy-takes-over-simpsons-intro

The British graffiti icon storyboarded the latest intro to the long-running cartoon, which opens with the town of Springfield scrawled in his distinctive tag.

But as the show cuts to the familiar couch scene, the credits take a dark turn — with a minute-long animation showing dozens of Asian sweatshop workers painting scenes for the cartoon in a filthy warehouse filled with rats, human bones and bio-waste.

Kittens are thrown into a wood chipper to create stuffing for Bart Simpson dolls while a chained unicorn collapses as its horn is used to punch holes in Simpsons DVDs.

The extended sequence was apparently inspired by reports that the show outsources the bulk of their animation to a company in South Korea.

Banksy, whose true identity has never been officially confirmed, is renowned for his political views.

The elusive artist employs guerrilla-style tactics to break into locations before leaving his pieces to be found the following morning.

Examples include drawing a life-sized replica of a Guantanamo Bay detainee at Disneyland and stencilling Israel's West Bank barrier.

In 2008 Britain's Mail on Sunday claimed to have unmasked the mystery artist as 36-year-old former Bristol public schoolboy Robin Gunningham.

Futurama Time Travel Song

dannym3141 says...

I was in tears about the "Mankind is enslaved by giraffe" bit when i was watching this on the show. It came unexpectedly, i wasn't really listening to the music because it sounded like an actual song when it began. So i tuned out and watched the pictures, then i tuned back in and it took me unexpectedly.

As for it being the best show right now - i am SO unbelievably fucking happy that they did what virtually no other show has ever done - which is come back and really deliver. They went off a bit during the bender's big score periodical shows, i didn't really enjoy them, but it's great to see that once they get back down to full time futurama-making business they've still got it. It's as good as it ever was, and i've always loved futurama most of all the animated shows. South park is close, i've never laughed as hard as i have at things in south park, but futurama makes me laugh almost as hard and it never needs to get crass, and i think that's amazing. It cracks me up over a normal situation without insulting anyone or swearing or referring to sexual acts or poo (same thing to some)

Dana Carvey is: DARWIN

Hahhahaha! "My name is DarWIN... not DarLOSE!" Classic!

If only we had thought of this argument against creationists decades ago, we would have won for sure. The clear link between artificial selection and natural selection through the use of breeding, millions off fossils, near mathematical proof through DNA sequencing and the distribution of animals showing every sign of common descent doesnt stand a chance against such a kick-ass tagline

Oh I agree whole heartedly. My new favorite show is Flight of the Conchords for just that reason, it's dry witty humor that stands well alone without much help.

But you know, this does show the effect the laugh track has - it makes things that are only marginally funny, funnier. I love when a show can genuinely live without a laugh track, like Arrested Development or the multitudes of animated shows.

But on that note, I think EVERY show on CBS would be like this if they didn't have a idiot, err, laugh track.

People Depressed That Avatar Isn't Real

mentality says...

Well, I see we've all already piled on the hate train, but..
I've experienced exactly what they're talking about with various anime shows. When I first watched FLCL I felt genuinely depressed for about two weeks when the show was over. Likable characters combined with seeing a young kid with friends having an adventureful life made me acutely aware of the things missing in my geek life.

Yeah I felt the same way after watching Evangelion as a kid.

Our world is gray and depressing? Open your eyes!

And how many people get to regularly see such sights in real life instead of just looking at pictures through a computer screen? I can understand people living in concrete jungles feeling that their surroundings are rather grim.

I just saw Avatar this past week. It was a good movie; there were only three things that struck me as not being sensible while I was watching it(compare this to Terminator Salvation, which I also saw this past week. It had at least 10 things that jumped out at me as either plot holes or just nonsense). Avatar gets away with things that wouldn't work in movies set on Earth because being set in a foreign planetary system gives them access to phenomena like a unique evolutionary history or the presence of the superconducting mineral as explanations for aspects of the plot.

While I did not feel depressed after seeing Avatar, I did experience a sensation similar to missing someone for a minute or two after leaving the theater. A relatively believable story, likable characters, a female lead with sex appeal, exotic environment, the fact that I strongly want to see travel to other stars happen within my lifetime, the fact that I'm single, and the fact that the movie was over two and a half hours long; I guess all that could have added up to create the sensation I felt.

The Sargassum Fish ~ No, not the sarcasm fish...

AeroMechanical says...

From what I recall, it really wasn't until the late nineties when animal shows became garbage. Reality shows wrecked them. All of a sudden the Discovery channel went from interesting, fairly in-depth documentaries about the lives of animals to THE WORLD'S DEADLIEST SNAKES! and other sort of low attention span oriented shows with just a string of thirty second segments. Aside from that, now it's all shows about asteroids destroying the earth.

This is what the japanese kids are watching!?! Bleach part 2

jmd says...

And this folks is a wonderful example of how sheltered Americans have become. All that censorship on tv... watered down mindless kids shows... helicopter parents and warning labels.

Mas, your prolly a virgin and think that anytime a woman bares her breast it MUST involve sex 10 seconds later, however in the real world it isn't quite so.

#1 this is japan, exposed breast on public tv are not unusual. Bleach does stick to mild echii at best, but there are many other daytime animes which have shown nudity since the 1980s. Brain Powered's intro has tons of it even though it is tamer than bleach.

#2 Bleach is not a kids show.. its targeted at teens. Not that most kids couldn't follow it. If you considered the complexity of japans kid's anime shows like Alice, Cardcaptor, Nanoha, Dennō coil, it makes me ashamed the best our tv has to offer is pokemon (which is japanese.. but were selling the best of japans worst here), blues clues, teletubies, and several serialized versions of walt disneys old and busted animated worlds. Todays morning TV is generally 3 things, a badly animated original kids show using the worst realtime 3d graphics has to offer for the lowest budget possible, a teen comedy drama with a similar budget for writing, or one of the 100 seasons of power rangers.

#3 In the land of public bath houses, appearing nakid in front of strangers isn't THAT uncommon. Her (the nakid chick) character isnt QUITE realistic as she is constantly acting like the dumb blond, but other then the quick mood changes back and forth, the scene was written pretty well (if not boring for those who hate dramas).
