Solar Roadways

hatsix says...

The most consistent thing about the roads themselves is that there are cars on them. More so with parking lots. The Gas Station had way more than enough roof area to cover it's electricity usage, no need for putting panels underneath parked cars.

A light coat of dust on panels can decrease their efficiency by up to 50%... there would have to be a CONSTANT fleet of road washers, slowing down traffic. At least with roof/road mounted panels they can be tilted to shed most of the dust/pollen that accumulates, though they do have to be washed monthly.

And then there's the question of what happens with accidents. Sure, the tensile strength might be as strong as steel, but it's because of the enormous pressure it's under. it only takes one flaw in the surface to make the glass susceptible to shattering... just the thing to make car accidents more hazardous.

the road shoulders aren't as consistent as the roads themselves in structure/ quality, or space. This variability would lead to higher implementation and design costs.

dude you're sooo right. pass the bong.

How is the New Featured *Promote Panel (User Poll by lucky760)

bareboards2 says...

@eric3579, especially since power points have been cut off at the knees, so there won't be as many PPs available to promote. (I got the impression dag and lucky didn't like lots of promotes, didn't like new people shooting up in the ranks, didn't like how successful Sifters generated more success for themselves, wanted the Sift community to be more uniform with no big outliers. With power points no longer accumulating, there won't be lots of promoting, right?)

Silence on the Power Point limitation? (Money Talk Post)

pumkinandstorm says...

I also don't understand why power points are being limited. If someone is posting quality videos that are making top 15 or #1, I think they should be rewarded for their efforts regardless of how many power points they have already accumulated. I'm "new" here but feel that I've spent more "time" on the site than people that have been here for many years. Now I'm entitled to only ONE power point at a time? That doesn't seem right. I am very generous with my power points. After only 8 months I already have my level 26 assister badge and am #6 on that badge list so I am obviously not abusing my points in any way. I won't be able to help people like before and that really bothers me. What DOES it matter how many points a person is hoarding? If they have been earned from posting great videos and great comments, a person should feel free to use them (or not use them) as they wish...

Silence on the Power Point limitation? (Money Talk Post)

RadHazG says...

Speaking from personal experience as one who only just recently got silver, I have a stockpile of points not because I intended to do so, but because there wasn't anything much I could do with them besides promote my own video's (not something I do often). It makes a kind of sense to limit the new folks like this as there isn't much they can do with the points anyway and it keeps them from going nuts with the points they accumulate in the meantime the instant they get to use them on other things. I do think that a max of 1 for each year is a bit stiff though. 2 per year or something? At least something that scales slightly more?

Oh, there's your problem. On both videos siftbot said "alien_concept has fixed this video's dead embed code - no Power Points awarded because alien_concept's points are already fully charged."

That's because your points are fully "charged" at or above the recharge amount of 2. The new "maximum accumulation" value is the hard limit at which siftbot will no longer give you power points (e.g., for top videos and other awards), but the recharge rate is used for fixing dead videos...

I'll leave you with the point I gave you as I consider restructuring things so the "maximum accumulation" will be allowed for fixing dead videos.

Thanks for pointing out this issue!

http://videosift.com/video/Peter-Kay-On-The-Art-Of-Dipping-Biscuits-In-Your-Cup-Of-Tea This was the first one. I'm thinking maybe I can't accumulate more PP if I've got more than two? I had three there, but thought you could have up to four? Still doesn't shed any light on why I didn't get a notification, but yeah And this one http://videosift.com/video/Queen-Live-Aid-Entire-Performance-July-13th-1985.

Any chance you can point me at the videos you fixed so I can investigate?

For now I'll up your PP count by 1.

Side note: For your profile styles, you should select "dark" as your base style because all your text is almost invisible as you have "light" selected right now.

Thanks!

I misread the announcement. I thought it was saying that we would get power points recharged based on the number of years we were active, which I thought was great.

It doesn't say anything like that -- my reading comprehension skills suck these days.

I must admit that I am also way way bummed by this. Some of us are feral, acquisitive creatures who respond well to positive reinforcement and work hard as lab rats pushing the bar to get our pellets. Having my pellets taken away is a harsh blow.... @dag, before you bestow Sift of the Week Power Points, 'twould be best to check to see if they can actually be bestowed. To have one's gift be yanked back... oh, the pain, the pain!

I can see the logic, though. Too much power can accumulate in the hands of those who are on the site more than others. That can have a dampening effect on less involved Sifters, in a variety of ways.

Plus... revenue. You guys need to get paid for all your work.

I am already mourning my reduced wealth. Five power points. Ripped from my womb. Damn.

I'll need to work on siftbot's logic so it will recognize that you're at your limit. That's the case here. As described in the v5 announcement, everyone has a cap on the number of power points they can accumulate.

So.... maybe it is just my account....

But I have been awarded 5 power points that didn't get credited to my account.

1. 2 for #1 Vid
2. 2 for dag's lovely present for being Sift of the Week, on the same vid
3. 1 for getting a Pop Star badge.

At first, I thought it was my memory. But this last one... I definitely didn't get that point.

I have a bug for ya. I could only submit this comment or read the others from outside of this post on the main sift talk page by expanding it using the comments link. If I click on the title and go into the post itself the bottom or the footer of the page cuts off the rest of the list and the submit a comment section..

Also could someone explain the max accumulated points is that for Charters?

Oh forgot to mention Im using google Chrome.

Ok had a change to read some of the above comments see that its already been stated.

Just looking through some of the new things on my profile, the "Your posts with bookmarks" section is giving me quite a few doubles of the same video on this list.

Also, the number is definitely wrong. The reason I was going through it in the first place was because I was relatively sure my videos hadn't accumulated 70345 bookmarks.

Storm Diaries - How is everybody doing? (Nature Talk Post)

mintbbb says...

Tuesday morning 7am in Ohio right now. The house has power and I hope not much is damaged. When I was taking my dog out around 9pm last night, I noticed that one gutter drain pipe had totally come down. If that's all the damage to the house, I am not complaining. The wind was crazy throughout the night, and it is coming from the north, which normally never happens. Right now looks like we are having teeny flakes of snow instead of rain. But the ground temp is around 34F, so it is not accumulating. I'll check outside the house once it gets lighter. Wind gusts are still somewhere around 50mph

Ohio was not hit hard, at least not where I live - so far. Local paper has a list of what is happening, state by state: http://www.10tv.com/content/stories/2012/10/30/national-state-by-state-damage.html

I hope everybody and their loved ones are safe.

I don't feel like posting silly videos today. I am just grateful that everything is fine right where I live.

Anonymous Outs Amanda Todd's Bully - Siftable? *discuss (News Talk Post)

Sagemind says...

Tough call.
One side of me says, Bullying this gut into ruin is no better that what has happened to Amanda.

The other om me says This Pedophile who destroyed not only a person's life, he knowingly preyed upon a minor whom he knew couldn't fight back physically or mentally should reap what he has sown.
This was not some petty bullying. This was a 30 year old adult blackmailing a minor for sexual purposes, destroying the life she had and subsequently, every life she had as she tried to rebuild until the awful day when she finally cracked and killed herself.

Plus he kept an online "jailbait folder of all the teens he had accumulated photos from.

Verizon Bills a Guy For Burned Cable Boxes

messenger says...

I don't see what his issue is with the equipment. Sure, Verizon could choose to forgive the replacement fees, or decide that after 4-6 years they're not worth anything anyway (fact), but they're under no legal obligation to do so. Where he's got a case is with the service charges which have been accumulating since February, despite the fact he informed Verizon in February. He should have hit that point harder, not the old equipment point.

Scientific Weight Loss Tips

radx says...

Everytime I hear about all these efforts people have to undergo to lose weight, I'm quite relieved that 30 minutes on an exercise bike every morning was sufficient to get rid of the surplus weight I accumulated during my years at university. Took 4-5 months to drop down from 91kg to 68kg, but at least I didn't have to change my eating habbits.

Two years later and I'm still eating enough for two.
